Leyland would not say who game 4 starter will be... Sensitive situation with Penny/Porcello, since one will be odd man out.
Tigers drop game one to O's, 6-5. Turner started - hit hard thru 3IP+ - and Tigers found themselves behind 5-0 going to bottom of 4th.
Orioles immediately broke tie off Pauley in 6th - on check-swing single by Reimold, scoring Jones from 3rd.
Tigers bullpen did very good job - 6IP and 1ER...Pauley looked sharp, so did Alburquerque (1IP, 2K), Perry (6 up, 6 down) and Benoit.
Tigers bullpen has been THE big improvement in 2nd half: 2.92ERA in 182 IP, 2nd-best in AL, compared to the 4.68ERA 1st half, which ranked 13th.

Teams are moving closer to monitoring their players' physical conditioning year-round, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, although the players' union likely won't care for it. Some executives are growing increasingly frustrated by players who report to Spring Training out of shape or let themselves go during the season, according to Olney.

The Tigers still have something to play for: the second-best record in the American League and home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

By the time the Tigers took the field, Oakland had defeated Texas, and with Detroit having a chance to take a one-game lead over the American League West leaders, rookie Jacob Turner had a rough outing. He dug a 5-0 hole for the AL Central champs in a 6-5 loss Thursday night to the Baltimore Orioles before 27,847 at Comerica Park.

"They just got done beating up on Boston," said manager Jim Leyland of the Orioles. "I keep saying it's not who you play but when you play them. It's hard to win games up here."

Turner allowed seven hits and four earned runs in three innings in his third start of the season. Delmon Young hit a three-run homer in the fifth to tie the game at 5. But the Orioles scored the winning run in the sixth off David Pauley (5-6).

Jeff Jones, pitching coach
It's hard to prove coaching's cause-and-effect on players' performance but there's at least a notable correlation between the Tigers changing pitching coaches and their pitchers performing much better. Under Rick Knapp's guidance through July 2, the Tigers were 44-40, with a 4.41 staff ERA, a .261 average against and a 1.96 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Since July 3 under Jones, the Tigers are 46-25, with a 3.61 ERA, .252 average against and a 2.64 K/BB ratio. During that time Detroit acquired Doug Fister, but he alone couldn't make up that night-and-day difference.
