June 15 in Tigers and mlb history:

1928 - A Detroit Tigers legend for 22 years, Ty Cobb now with the Philadelphia Athletics steals home for the 54th and final time in his 24-year career to extend his major league record. It comes in the eighth inning against the Cleveland Indians.

1931 - Cut-down day for major league rosters includes the retirement of Eddie Collins and
the Ex- Detroit Tigers hitter extradonaire Harry Heilmann. Collins becomes a coach for the Philadelphia Athletics and Heilmann will return briefly to the Cincinnati Reds next season.

1948 - The Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 4 - 1, before a crowd of 54,480 in the first night game at Briggs Stadium. Hal Newhouser allows just two hits in the Tigers 4-1 win over the Athletics. The Tigers are the last American League team to install lights.

1952 - in the second game of a doubleheader against the Senators, Tiger first baseman Walt Dropo gets a hit in his 12th consecutive at-bat, tying the major league record. Detroit had acquired Dropo from the Red Sox in a trade less than two weeks earlier.

1965 - Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain makes a first-inning relief appearance and strikes out the first seven batters he faces, setting a major league record. He records 14 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings as Detroit rallies to beat the Boston Red Sox, 6 - 5. Bill Freehan has a record-tying 19 putouts at catcher.

1966 - Al Kaline collects his 2,000th hit in the Tigers 11-7 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Kaline reaches the milestone in the first inning when he singles in a run against Jim Lonborg. It took Kaline just 1,769 games to get here. Kaline becomes the fifth Tiger batter to reach 2,000 hits mark, joining legends Ty Cobb, Charlie Gehringer, Sam Crawford, and Harry Heilmann.

Rick Porcello continues to evolve into solid starter, offense gets job done on road against Twins.
from Mlive

The Tigers won Friday night, so there's no reason to pile on the offense. But they did go 0-for-9 in the final three innings, and it's still worth a look at the trend that has developed this season.

Let's break it down by inning, using numbers heading into the game Friday night:

?Inning: avg./OPS/Runs
?First: .305/.754/29
?Second: .312/.869/51
?Third: .282/.812/42
?Fourth: .312/.920/54
?Fifth: .358/.940/50
?Sixth: .276/.796/37
?Seventh: .243/.690/26
?Eighth: .235/.657/22
?Ninth: .183/.502/8
?Extras: .198/.527/5

Tigers 4 - Twins 0: The transformed Rick Porcello struck out 4 of the first 6 men, notched his 5th K the first time a man reached 2nd base, and went on to blank Minnesota for 7 innings on 3 hits, no walks. Detroit scored their runs in the 6th off Scott Diamond (5.2 IP, 1 SO), starting with a walk to Austin Jackson, who was welcomed back after a 30-game absence. Prince Fielder had been 1 for 15 off Diamond before doubling harmlessly in the 4th, and he doubled again in the 5th to score 2 and punish a 2-out IBB to Miguel Cabrera. Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta tacked on RBI doubles, and the 4-0 margin let Jim Leyland dodge for now the question of who?ll handle the next close 9th.
?In 9 starts since a career-worst beating, Porcello has a 2.84 ERA in 57 IP, with 55 Ks and 10 walks. Tonight, he handled nemesis Josh Willingham (7 for 13, 2 HRs, 2 doubles) with ease, 2 Ks and a groundout.
?Fielder is crushing lefties this year: 27 for 72, 4 HRs, 5 doubles, 18 RBI, OPS over 1.050.
?Twins rookie Caleb Thielbar worked the 9th and ran his career-opening streak to 10 scoreless games, a club record, and 11.2 IP, 2.1 IP shy of Hod Lisenbee?s mark.

Three Reasons for Rick Porcello's Success
Reasons for Rick's success IMO...
from TigsTownPaul

1) He's bumped his K/9 up more than 2 K's compared to last year. He's relying much more on his curve than his slider as his primary breaking pitch, but still uses the slider occasionally, which is likely keeping hitters more off-balance, as the slider now gets a swing and miss (in limited usage) 16% of the time, making it his best swing and miss pitch. Comparatively, last year the slider was BY FAR his worst pitch - his slider runs above average metric was -18.6, making it not just his worst pitch, but one of the worst pitches in baseball last year.

2) His command has taken a step in the right direction. It's not that he's necessarily throwing more strikes than he used to (he's not, it's virtually identical YOY), but his placement of those pitches is becoming better, and more of the strikes are swings and misses (see point 1). That's also helped him reduce walks, limiting base runners, keeping him out of situations that he's notoriously struggled in.

3) The quintessential "luck" variable... his BAbip sits at .294, 50 full points lower than it was at last year. It's not JUST better fortune (see #'s 1 and 2 above), but the balls in play on him are getting converted to outs at a much higher rate right now.

According to Pitch f/x, Porcello has thrown 53 sliders in 2013. No one has gotten a hit off of it. http://bit.ly/18KxFVe

On Friday night, Prince Fielder followed an intentional walk to Miguel Cabrera with a two-run double. Fielder has reached base safely in 15 of his past 22 plate appearances after a Cabrera walk and is batting .650 with five doubles and 16 RBIs in that span.

Tigers starting pitchers have tossed quality starts in 19 of Detroit's past 20 games and have gone 11-5 in that span. The rotation has combined for 156 strikeouts and a 2.28 ERA during that stretch.
