Leyland concerned after Sanchez's short outing.
After Anibal Sanchez's short outing on Saturday night, Tigers manager Jim Leyland expressed some unease about his right-hander.

Leyland pulled Sanchez after 3 2/3 innings and 72 pitches. Sanchez missed his previous start with muscle stiffness in his upper back and was pulled on Saturday as a precaution, Leyland said after the game. The Tigers skipper also said that Sanchez was fine physically and was planning to pull him around 80 pitches.

But prior to Sunday's game, Leyland added that Sanchez "just didn't look right" in his start and was admittedly concerned.
"The funny part about it is, there's no pain or anything," Leyland said. "That's the information I'm getting. ? I'm concerned about it. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to smell something. It just didn't look right coming out [of his hand]."

Sanchez did say after the game that despite feeling fine physically, his pitches didn't have their usual power and velocity.
"I can't explain it, I would like to know how this happened," Sanchez said.

Leyland sticks with Avila during slump.
Alex Avila just can't shake his slump.
The catcher was 0-for-6 in two games against the Twins entering Sunday's series finale and is 26-for-160 on the season with a .163 batting average. His last hit came on June 6 in a 5-2 win of Tampa Bay. In six games since, Avila is on a 0-for-17 skid.

"Alex realizes he's got to do it, but you still want to be there for him," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "My heart aches for him right now. I know it's a business and all that, but my heart aches for the kid right now because he is just struggling so bad ? but this is the big leagues."

There's no magic formula to get a hitter out of a slump, but Leyland is trying to find a balance between giving Avila some days off and getting him more at-bats.
"You just try to keep encouraging the player and try to give him time off and try to pick your spots to get him in there," Leyland said. "It's a tough call, because sometimes you don't really know if you're better off getting him out of there for a couple days ? I think the main thing is to stay positive."

Leyland said sometimes all it takes it one hit for something to click. Sometimes it takes a little more. Regardless, he will continue to play him as he sees fit.

"I'm playing him [Sunday]," Leyland said. "I don't know if I'm really doing the right thing or not, to be honest with you. First of all, I have a responsibility to the team, but I think he has some value in this game today, whether he gets a hit or not."

Twins GM terry ryan said that he has not talked to Tigers GM Dombrowski re: Glen Perkins and would rather have him pitch for him than against him.

Also per nick cafardo: Phillies may look to make a Papelbon trade and believe Cardinals, RedSox, and Tigers may have interest.
