Two Homers Instead of a Triple.
Miguel Cabrera knocks out four hits, hitting two home runs a double and a single, a night he?s probably happy to miss hitting for the cycle. He drove in three runs to bring his season total to 81, and raises his league leading batting average to .377. Chris Davis went 0 for 3 in the Orioles win over the Yankees, so Cabrera gained in the home run race. Miguel now trails Davis by four in the long ball contest as Miguel goes for his second consecutive triple crown.
The Tigers beat the Rays 6-3.

June 29 in Tigers and mlb history:

1907 - at Bennett Park Ty Cobb steals home for the first time in his career, victimizing the Cleveland battery of pitcher Heinie Berger and catcher Howard Wakefield.

1968: Jim Northrup's third grand slam ties the major-league record for slams in a month (Rudy York, May 1938), and sets a major-league record for slams in a week. The Tigers win 5 - 2 over Chicago, as Denny McLain tallies his 14th victory.

1983 - Mark Fidrych, in the second year of an extended comeback attempt with the Pawtucket Red Sox (International League) retires. The 1976 American League Rookie of the Year was 2-5 with a 9.68 ERA.

1984: Twins rookie Andre David hits a 2-run home run off Jack Morris in his first major league at bat to spark Minnesota to a 5 - 3 win over Detroit before 44,619. It is the only home run David will hit in the big leagues and it stops Morris's 11-game win streak over the Twins. Detroit wins the nitecap 7 - 5 as Kirk Gibson starts the scoring with a two-run homer in the 1st and ends it with a two-run homer in the 9th. The Tigers also score in the 2nd on back-to-back homers by Chet Lemon and Ruppert Jones.

1986 - Detroit beats Milwaukee, 9 - 5, in the first game of a doubleheader split, making Tigers manager Sparky Anderson the first manager ever to win 600 games in each league.

Max Scherzer is first Tigers pitcher to begin season 12-0.
from the freep

Max Scherzer became the first Tigers pitcher ever to open a season 12-0.
Max is the first big-league pitcher with a 12-0 record since Boston?s Roger Clemens opened 14-0 in 1986.

Miguel Cabrera made the latest statement that this season he will become the first right-handed hitter since Rogers Hornsby to win three straight batting titles.
Cabrera hiked his league-best average to .377. With the season?s halfway point a few days away, he?s a candidate to become the first player to win the Triple Crown in consecutive seasons.

Prince Fielder lined a high-altitude two-run homer off the rightfield catwalk, the first of those distinctive blows this season in the Rays? indoor theater. Cabrera said that at Comerica Park, the ball might have hit the Al Kaline sign far beyond the rightfield fence. It was Fielder?s first homer in 3? weeks, but he said he?s more concerned with RBIs, of which he now has 62, on pace for 129.

Cabrera continues to amaze.
From Elias: Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-4 with two home runs in the Tigers' 6-3 win over the Rays on Friday night. It is the third time that Cabrera went 4-for-4 with multiple homers in a game this season, he also did that against the Astros on May 4th and against the Rangers on May 19th (3 homer game). Cabrera is the first player in the modern era (since 1900) to go 4-for-4 or better with multiple homers in three games in a single season. Sixteen players had two such games in a season since 1900.

Tigers 6 - Rays 3: “Miggy to the Max:” Cabrera put up an early deuce, blasting the 2nd pitch he ever saw from Alex Colome to set Scherzer on the path to his 12th straight win. He put down the first 11 Rays before Zorilla went deep, and finished with 7 IP on 3 runs, 4 hits, a walk and 9 Ks. Cabrera would do it again (4-3-4-3), but with the lead down to one in the 8th, Prince Fielder broke a 21-game dinger drought with a moonraking rainmaker, cashing Miguel’s double for some welcome insurance. Joaquin Benoit closed it out with a hit and 2 Ks; he’s not blown a lead yet this year, and has just 1 game out of 32 with a small negative WPA.
•Uh-oh: Longo came out with a foot problem.
•3 pitches, 2 HRs in Cabrera’s first 2 trips — the first dingers and earned runs off Colome, in his 3rd start. Miggy came in batting .423/1.250+ against starting pitchers, and .283/.875-ish vs. relievers (with almost twice the K rate). He added a single off Colome and a reliever double, both on 1-2 counts; he’s 16-48 on 1-2, slugging .542. Over all, he’s back up to .377/1.146, right where he was a month ago. In Detroit’s last 162 games (161 for Cabrera), he has 52 HRs, 158 RBI, 126 runs, 222 hits, .360 BA, 417 total bases, slugging .677.
•Fielder came into June with a 20-game dry spell, then homered in 3 straight.
•Scherzer still hasn’t gone the distance (he went 9 once), and his low-hit game is 2 for 7+ IP.
•Wil Myers is enjoying his own presence. He soloed and singled, scored twice, and is off to a fine start despite a 12-1 SO/BB ratio. But someone said he reminds them of Dale Murphy, and that I protest: Murph never pimped at the plate; Myers is making me hate him.
•Al-Al needs to go back down. Started the 8th with a 3-run lead, 0-2 on Yunel Escobar, lost him on balls. Nobody cares about your wipeout slider any more, Al.
•Memo to Kelly: Getting doubled off 3rd on a line drive to short — that should never happen. The infield was in, and Kelly took a huge secondary lead, hoping to score on a grounder. That’s an utterly wrong approach with a 3-run lead, 1 out and 2 in scoring position, with a .300 hitter on deck

Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera is the best hitter in baseball, no doubt, and more than likely the slam dunk #1 pick in 2014 fantasy drafts. Last night, he went 4-4 with 2 HRs, 3 runs and 3 RBI in the Tigers 6-3 win over the Rays. Miggy raised his triple slash line to .377-.464-.682 with 24 HRs, 62 runs, and 81 RBI in 78 games, putting him on pace for 50 HRs and 168 RBI. Triple Crown #2??
Who has the better shot at hitting 50 home runs this season: Miguel Cabrera or Chris Davis?
Tigers starter Max Scherzer is having the best year of his career thus far, and I think he is the favorite for the American League Cy Young award, especially after winning his 12th game of the season last night. Scherzer gave up 3 runs on 4 hits, a walk and 9 strikeouts in the Tigers 6-3 win. Scherzer is now 12-0 with a 3.10 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and a 131-25 strikeout to walk rate in 110.1 innings. Heck, if I didn't include his name in this blurb, one would think I was talking about Justin Verlander and not Scherzer.
