Jim Leyland hopes to get Detroit Tigers bullpen settled: 'I haven't done a good job of getting these guys in sync'.

So, how does the bullpen appear to be set up right now? Well, let's break it down. I am reading between the lines a bit here based on some things Leyland said and on which pitchers were warming up and were used at different times Friday night. But paint the picture, in part based on Leyland's words and in part based on a bit of educated guessing:
?Closer: Benoit. Leyland has not gone as far as to say that Benoit is "the" closer. But he has said that Benoit will close when he's healthy and available. The only difference, it appears, between Benoit's role this season and Valverde's in 2012 is that the Tigers are hesitant to overuse Benoit and won't likely pitch him three days in a row.
?Setup man: Alburquerque. Leyland said more than once Friday that he hopes Alburquerque can settle into the setup role. His success there will be dependent on whether he can throw strikes since, when he is right, he is often basically unhittable.
?Seventh inning: Rondon and Drew Smyly. Last season, Leyland relied on the righty-lefty combination of Dotel and Coke in this spot. It appears that Rondon and Smyly will be in these roles for the foreseeable future. Those were the two who were warming up in the seventh Friday night. Leyland also stressed before the game that he is hopeful Smyly, for now, can become a one-inning pitcher so he can be used on consecutive days. When asked whether Rondon was a one-inning pitcher, Leyland responded with one word: "Yes."
?Lefty-on-lefty specialist: Coke. Leyland didn't specifically say this, but based on the process of elimination and the fact that Smyly warmed up in the seventh Friday, well, this appears to be where Coke is right now.
?Long relief: Luke Putkonen and Darin Downs.
None of this is set in stone, of course. There's a bit of speculation involved. And this scenario assumes that all relievers are available, which isn't always the case.
