Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Today from henning;
In Dallas for Winter Meetings. Jon Heyman of SI.com and MLB TV is in the lobby and just wrote Buehrle wants $14 milion a year.
Not the least bit surprised they're shooting for $14 mill. He and his agent won't get it. It's the no-trade clause that's a bigger problem.
Tigers just arriving this afternoon. No official conferences until tomorrow. But they're busy: Buehrle, Cespedes, etc.
Back to Buehrle: He can shoot for $14 mill annually and probably get it for three years, or close -- but not with a straight no-trade.
Expect Tigers will tell us tomorrow they're prepared to platoon at second base and third: Rayburn/Santiago, Inge/Kelly.
Once Tigers saw what Jamey Carroll signed for and what Prado would cost in a trade, they clearly decided to focus on LF and on Buehrle.
To repeat biggest failing of the Tigers minor-league system these past 10 years: No serious middle-infield prospects developed.
See zero -- less than zero -- chance Tigers will make a move on Reyes. He's been out of their financial range all along. Not an option.
Reyes will cost $18 million or more a year for five years. Cespedes' $50 million -- if it's that high -- can be spread out. Big difference.
Mike Ilitch will spend. But there's a limit. Tigers are already over $100 million (contracts, raises). Cespedes/Buehrle would be a stretch.
Yes, could exceed $50 million, but I'd say closer to $50 mill for Cespedes. Remember, teams are taking a calculated gamble. He's risky.
Could be a .250/.260 hitter 20/25 Hr's, 20/30 sb's, high strikeouts.
Would be surprised if Dombrowski doesn't make a move before Thursday. He's aggressive, business is about to boom. Tigers are usually busy.

December 5 in Tigers and mlb history :

1957: The American League purchases a $1.8 million group accident policy to help clubs buy new players in case of a major disaster.

1957: The minor leagues threaten to sue Major League Baseball if it televises Sunday games in their territory.

1959: The Phils ship Chico Fernandez and Ray Semproch to Detroit for Ken Walters, Ted Lepcio, and minor leaguer Alex Cosmidis. The Cuban-born Fernandez was the first black to play for the Phils, and will be the second black to play for Detroit.

1987 - The Tigers swap pitcher Dan Petry to the Angels for center fielder Gary Pettis.

1996: The new collective bargaining agreement is unanimously approved by the players association executive committee, clearing the path for interleague play and guaranteeing no work stoppages until 2001.

1999 - Major League Baseball and ESPN agree to settle their lawsuit by signing a new 6-year, $800 million deal. The suit involved ESPN's decision to give NFL football games priority over late-season Sunday night baseball games on its main channel.
