Detroit Tigers Team Notes

January 17 in Tigers and mlb history :

1952 - Detroit Tigers owner Walter Briggs dies at the age of 74. His son will succeed him in the presidency.

2008 - Major League Baseball owners unanimously vote to extend commissioner Bud Selig's contract through the 2012 season. The contract extension will make Selig baseball's second-longest-serving commissioner, behind only Kenesaw Mountain Landis. The vote comes in a week when Selig has been criticized by the U.S. Congress for not cracking down hard enough on steroids.

Detroit Tigers C Victor Martinez (knee) was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee after undergoing an MRI exam. He injured his knee during an offseason workout last week and will likely miss the entire 2012 season. He will be re-evaluated next week and is expected to need surgery.

Martinez was working out last week near his offseason home in Orlando, according to Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand, when he suffered the injury during agility drills. He was shuffling side-to-side when his other foot gave way.

"He was doing a lateral move," Rand said. "He had his right foot slip, and all his weight came down on his left knee."

Rand said Martinez called him late last week and traveled to Lakeland, Fla., for an MRI exam. The results that came back Monday were jarring.

Dombrowski said they received verification on the results Monday night. Martinez plans on getting a second opinion from noted orthopedic surgeon Richard Steadman early next week, but the Tigers are expecting he'll need surgery.

Victor Khabie, chief of sports medicine at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, N.Y., says the timetable from surgery to a return to baseball is usually around nine months.

His Tigers' teammates could talk for hours about the things he did that couldn't be measured, touched or weighed. He brought experience and leadership and the respect that comes with having played 10 seasons, most of them behind the plate, where toughness and smarts and an understanding of the game separates the good ones from the rest.

Beyond the 178 hits, 40 doubles and 103 RBIs, Dombrowski just can't know how Martinez's absence will impact his team's chemistry, both in terms of offense and clubhouse camaraderie.
