Victor Martinez suffers knee injury, likely out for 2012.
So much for that quiet Tigers offseason. The team announced today that Victor Martinez suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during offseason workouts. If surgery is required, it

Victor Martinez' torn ACL leaves big question mark for Tigers.

Martinez had an MRI in Lakeland yesterday, confirming the tear. He will see Dr. Richard Stedman in Colorado next week, and will almost certainly have surgery. (If the name Stedman sounds familiar, he is the same surgeon who operated on both Clete Thomas and Grady Sizemore in the past, though that was a different kind of procedure.)
The Tigers will not know any timetables until after next week. No one will know more until Dr. Stedman takes a closer look and does what he has to do, if he has to. They do not rule out Martinez returning by the end of the year; however, they do not expect it.

The Tigers could use some of that money to sign one of the veteran DH/1B types that remain on the market.

Some names, highlighted by former Tigers Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon, also include Derrek Lee and Hideki Matsui. Obviously none of those names are as appealing as having VMart would be.
Some have suggested that the club should now make a run at a deal with Prince Fielder, but that outcome is astronomically implausible. Fielder has said he is not interested in signing as a DH and the Tigers continue to refuse to move Cabrera back across the infield to his old position.

January 18 in Tigers and mlb history :

1947 - The Detroit Tigers sell All-Star first baseman Hank Greenberg to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1946, Greenberg led the American League with 44 home runs and 127 RBI, but will slump to 25 home runs and 74 RBI with the Pirates and will retire after the season.

1994 - Major league owners approve a new revenue-sharing plan keyed to a salary cap, which requires the players' approval. They will reject it, causing a strike.
