Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Conversation with Dombrowski minutes ago. Sounds like Quick Draw this time will go slow replacing V-Mart. Wants a l-o-n-g look at options.
Understands Tigers have a shot at getting a NL-type who doesn't fit in as a DH if a NL team decides to go young. One reason he might wait.
Said he will pull the trigger on something irresistible. Otherwise, Tigers look as if they'll take inordinate time mulling DH/OF/IF options.
Just a gut feeling: Carlos Lee could fit. Kotchman could be of interest. But still think they'll make a big trade -- maybe in spring camp.
Dombrowski has heard from a ton of agents, and a couple GMs. The GMs offered guys who were of no interest. Ensuing chats should be meatier.
Dombrowski conceded he likes to move fast. But believes this situation merits Tigers overtime. Doesn't want to run into a better deal later.
Jim Bowden today proposed Lee for Oliver. Astros would pay at least half of Lee's $$.

January 19 in Tigers and mlb history :

1994 - Major league owners amend the major league agreement, giving complete power to the Commissioner on labor negotiations. Bud Selig will continue to act as interim commissioner.

2006: Baseball officials are cautiously expecting good news soon from the George W. Bush administration that would clear the way for Cuba to participate in the first World Baseball Classic. Meanwhile, Fidel Castro suggests the United States doesn't want to play Cuba in the WBC. The U.S. Treasury Department last month denied MLB's application for Cuba to play its scheduled first-round games in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. Later rounds are to be played on the U.S. mainland. The license is required under 45-year-old American sanctions against Cuba. The International Baseball Federation has said it will not sanction the tournament if Cuba isn't allowed to play.
