1903: The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Boston Americans, 7-3, in the first World Series game ever played. Jimmy Sebring hits the first home run in the Series, as Deacon Phillippe is the winning pitcher and Cy Young the loser.
1919: Just before the start of the World Series, the highly favored Chicago White Sox become the betting underdogs in the best-of-nine contest. Eddie Cicotte, a 29-game winner, is driven from the hill in a five-run 4th inning. The Cincinnati Reds' Dutch Ruether pitches a six-hitter and helps himself with three RBI on two triples and a single for a 9 - 1 victory.
1932: Babe Ruth, as legend has it, calls his home run against Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root in the 5th inning of Game 3 of the World Series, won by the New York Yankees, 7 - 5, at Wrigley Field. Ruth and Lou Gehrig each hit two homers for the Yankees.
1942: The Detroit Tigers purchased Joe Hoover from Hollywood (PCL).
1943: MLB statistics show the Chicago White Sox Luke Appling leading American League hitters with a .328 batting average, the lowest since Ty Cobb hit .324 to lead in 1908.
Conversely, of course, the pitchers' marks are topped by Spud Chandler's 1.64 ERA, the best since 1919. Chandler also has the best winning percentage at .833, on a 20-4 won-lost mark.
White Sox outfielder Wally Moses stole 56 bases after stealing only three two years before.
The veteran Mel Ott hits only .234 for his New York Giants, but he still has 18 home runs, all at the Polo Grounds.
1944: at Briggs Stadium: Last-place Washington beats Detroit 4-1, depriving the Tigers of a tie for the pennant with St. Louis.
1949: The Detroit Tigers traded players to be named later to the Cleveland Indians for Jim Wilson. The Detroit Tigers sent Lum Harris (October 1, 1949), Anse Moore (October 1, 1949) and George Byam (minors) (October 1, 1949) to the Cleveland Indians to complete the trade.
1950: George Kell hits 2 doubles in the Tigers' season finale, a loss to the indians, to finish with a career high and AL-best 56. The Tigers' Vic Wertz is second in the AL with 37
1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run of the season against Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The homer eclipses Babe Ruth's 34-year-old single-season home run record.
1961: The Tigers get their 101st win in their season finale. Norm Cash hits his 41st home run, Al Kaline hits his AL-leading 41st double in the Tigers 8 - 3 win over the twins.
1967: At Tiger Stadium, on the final day of the season, California defeats Detroit 8-5, in the second game of a doubleheader to dash the Tigers? hopes of tying Boston for the pennant.
1970: John Hiller strikes out 11 in a 2-hit complete game shutout, and ties an American League record with 7 straight strikeouts.
After the game, Tigers fire manager Mayo Smith, who led the team to the 1968 world championship.
1972: Aurelio Rodriguez hits a 3-run home run: #Tigers beat the brewers to set up a season-ending showdown with Boston to decide the AL East.
1976: In his only start of the season, John Hiller pitches a 4-hit shutout and the Tigers beat the brewers 5 - 0.
1980: Mark Fidrych allows 4 runs in 5 innings but gets the win in his final career appearance and the Tigers beat the blue jays 11 - 7.
1980: With much media and fan pressure, the Boston Red Sox fire manager Don Zimmer.
1988: At Tiger Stadium, The Tigers hold their first Fan Appreciation Day.
1989: Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins and Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres each win batting titles on the final day of the regular season. Puckett goes 2-for-5 to edge Carney Lansford, .339 to .336, while Gwynn goes 3-for-4 to beat Will Clark, .336 to .333.
2000: Shane Halter plays nine positions in the Tigers walk off 12 - 11 win over the twins.
2002: Matt Perisho of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2003: A.J. Hinch of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2004: The Detroit Tigers selected Alexis Gomez off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.
2004: Ichiro Suzuki surpasses George Sisler's 84-year-old record of 257 hits in a single season. After this game, Ichiro has collected 259 hits in the season with two games left; he will finish the season with 262 hits.
2006: After leading the Royals 6-0, the #Tigers lose 10 - 8 in 12 innings, completing a season-ending sweep that drops them out of the division lead and into the wild card spot.
2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Steven Moya as an amateur free agent.
2008: Francisco Cruceta of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2012: The champagne also flows in Kansas City, MO, where the Tigers defeat the Royals, 6 - 3, to clinch the AL Central title. Miguel Cabrera hits his 44th home run in the game. In deference to their star slugger, who is leading the AL in all three triple crown categories but who has had trouble with alcohol abuse in the past, the Tigers choose to celebrate with an alcohol-free bubbly.
2014: Major League Baseball announces that it will test some new rules to speed up the flow of the game during this coming Arizona Fall League season. Hitters will no longer be allowed to step out of the batter's box during an at-bat; pitchers will need to begin their pitching motion within 20 seconds of receiving the ball; a batter will take his base automatically when an intentional walk is called for, without the need for the pitcher to throw four pitches outside the strike zone; teams will be limited to three mound conferences, now called time-outs, per game; and there will be a set maximum time before the first pitch is delivered following a change of innings or a pitching change. If these changes prove successful, they may well be introduced at all levels of organized baseball.
