2022: Aaron Judge ties one of the most hallowed records in baseball - the 61 home runs hit by Roger Maris in 1961, which still stands as the American League record six decades later. He takes Tim Mayza deep with a man on base in the 6th inning of a game at Rogers Centre, breaking a
3 - 3 tie to lead the Yankees to an 8 - 3 win. While three players have exceeded that total in the National League, all were active in the steroids era and their accomplishment has been tainted as a result - which is not the case for Judge.

Despite Tigers shortstop Javier Baez being in the midst of what?s become the worst full season of his career, the 30-year-old veteran apparently hasn?t ruled out the possibility of opting out of the final four years and $98MM left on his contract with Detroit after the season comes to a close.

In conversation with reporters, including Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, Baez said ?I don?t know what?s going to happen, to be honest with you,? noting that after the season the sides would ?sit down? and see what?s going to happen in the offseason.?

Given that Baez has been a bottom-four qualified shortstop this year in terms of fWAR ahead of only Enrique Hernandez, Tim Anderson, and Amed Rosario, it would be something of a shock to see the veteran decide to test the open market.

That said, he would join a dismal free agent shortstop class this offseason and still sports an elite glove at shortstop, as evidenced by his +8 Outs Above Average, which ranks in the 96th percentile per Baseball Savant.

1879: Baseball's reserve clause is born. National League owners, seeking to limit player salaries, led by Boston's Arthur Soden come to a secret agrerement whereby five players on each team will be "reserved" - off-limits to all other clubs. The reserve clause will be in effect for the 1880 season. The owners tell the newspapers that they have agreed upon a uniform contract with no salary advances.

Evans takes $29,000 and bets on the Cincinnati Reds, giving Chick Gandil only $10,000.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

We head into the final weekend of Miguel Cabrera?s baseball career. And as such, we will recognize him in various ways through this blog over the weekend.

Today, a recognition of just how terrific a hitter he has been.

I?ve got a list of his 5 most impressive batting stats and rankings.

(Through Thursday?s games)

1. HITS ? 3, 170 to finish in 16th place

2. TOTAL BASES ? 5,356 to finish in 14th place

3. RBIs ? 1,878 to finish in 13th place

4. 3,000 Hits/500 HRs/.300 BA ? One of only 3 joining Hank Aaron and Willie Mays.

5. 3,000 Hits/500 HRs/1,800 RBIs ? One of 5 that also includes Aaron and Mays.

Is there another impressive stat you?d like to share?
