Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

October 1 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903: The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Boston Americans, 7-3, in the first World Series game ever played. Jimmy Sebring hits the first home run in the Series, as Deacon Phillippe is the winning pitcher and Cy Young the loser.

1919: Just before the start of the World Series, the highly favored Chicago White Sox become the betting underdogs in the best-of-nine contest. Eddie Cicotte, a 29-game winner, is driven from the hill in a five-run 4th inning. The Cincinnati Reds' Dutch Ruether pitches a six-hitter and helps himself with three RBI on two triples and a single for a 9 - 1 victory.

1932: Babe Ruth, as legend has it, calls his home run against Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root in the 5th inning of Game 3 of the World Series, won by the New York Yankees, 7 - 5, at Wrigley Field. Ruth and Lou Gehrig each hit two homers for the Yankees.

1942: The Detroit Tigers purchased Joe Hoover from Hollywood (PCL).

1943: MLB statistics show the Chicago White Sox Luke Appling leading American League hitters with a .328 batting average, the lowest since Ty Cobb hit .324 to lead in 1908.
Conversely, of course, the pitchers' marks are topped by Spud Chandler's 1.64 ERA, the best since 1919. Chandler also has the best winning percentage at .833, on a 20-4 won-lost mark.
White Sox outfielder Wally Moses stole 56 bases after stealing only three two years before.
The veteran Mel Ott hits only .234 for his New York Giants, but he still has 18 home runs, all at the Polo Grounds.

1944: At Briggs Stadium: Last-place Washington beats Detroit 4-1 depriving the Tigers of a tie for the pennant with St. Louis.

1945: Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Rod Carew, born this day in Gat?n, Panama.

1949: The Detroit Tigers traded players to be named later to the Cleveland Indians for Jim Wilson. The Detroit Tigers sent Lum Harris (October 1, 1949), Anse Moore (October 1, 1949) and George Byam (minors) (October 1, 1949) to the Cleveland Indians to complete the trade.

1950: George Kell hits 2 doubles in the Tigers' season finale, a loss to the indians, to finish with a career high and AL-best 56. The Tigers' Vic Wertz is second in the AL with 37.

1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run of the season against Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The homer eclipses Babe Ruth's 34-year-old single-season home run record.

1961: The Tigers win their fourth straight game to finish with 101 wins. Norm Cash hits his 41st home run,
Al Kaline hits his AL-leading 41st double and wins another Gold Glove for his incredible defensive play in Rightfield.
Recent call-up Bill Freehan hits a 2-run single.
The upstart Tigers end up 2nd to the Yankees but turned a lot of heads in '61.

1967: At Tiger Stadium, on the final day of the season, California defeats Detroit 8-5, in the second game of a doubleheader to dash the Tigers? hopes of tying Boston for the pennant and finish one game out of first place.
Dick McAuliffe grounds into a double play to end the season: it's just the second time McAuliffe grounded into a double play all year.

1970: John Hiller strikes out 11 in a 2-hit complete game shutout, and ties an American League record with 7 straight strikeouts.
After the game, Tigers fire manager Mayo Smith, who led the team to the 1968 world championship.

1972: Aurelio Rodriguez hits a 3-run home run: Tigers beat the brewers to set up a season-ending showdown with Boston to decide the AL East.

1976: In his only start of the season, John Hiller pitches a 4-hit shutout and the Tigers beat the brewers 5 - 0.

1980: Mark Fidrych allows 4 runs in 5 innings but gets the win in his final career appearance and the Tigers beat the blue jays 11 - 7.

1980: With much media and fan pressure, the Boston Red Sox fire manager Don Zimmer.

1983: Jack Morris strikes out 2 to finish with a career high and AL-best 232 Ks on the season.

1988: At Tiger Stadium, The Tigers hold their first Fan Appreciation Day.

1989: Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins and Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres each win batting titles on the final day of the regular season. Puckett goes 2-for-5 to edge Carney Lansford, .339 to .336, while Gwynn goes 3-for-4 to beat Will Clark, .336 to .333.

2000: Dusty Allen hits a game-tying home run in the bottom of the 9th before Hal Morris hits a game-winning RBI single. Allen is one of three Tigers to homer in his last at-bat with the team. Shane Halter plays nine positions in the Tigers walk off 12 - 11 win over the twins.

2002: Matt Perisho of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2003: A.J. Hinch of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2004: The Detroit Tigers selected Alexis Gomez off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.

2004: Ichiro Suzuki surpasses George Sisler's 84-year-old record of 257 hits in a single season. After this game, Ichiro has collected 259 hits in the season with two games left; he will finish the season with 262 hits.

2006: After leading the Royals 6-0, the Tigers lose 10 - 8 in 12 innings, completing a season-ending sweep that drops them out of the division lead and into the wild card spot.

2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Steven Moya as an amateur free agent.
2008: Francisco Cruceta of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2012: The champagne also flows in Kansas City, MO, where the Tigers defeat the Royals, 6 - 3, to clinch the AL Central title. Miguel Cabrera hits his 44th home run in the game. In deference to their star slugger, who is leading the AL in all three triple crown categories but who has had trouble with alcohol abuse in the past, the Tigers choose to celebrate with an alcohol-free bubbly.

2014: Major League Baseball announces that it will test some new rules to speed up the flow of the game during this coming Arizona Fall League season. Hitters will no longer be allowed to step out of the batter's box during an at-bat; pitchers will need to begin their pitching motion within 20 seconds of receiving the ball; a batter will take his base automatically when an intentional walk is called for, without the need for the pitcher to throw four pitches outside the strike zone; teams will be limited to three mound conferences, now called time-outs, per game; and there will be a set maximum time before the first pitch is delivered following a change of innings or a pitching change. If these changes prove successful, they may well be introduced at all levels of organized baseball.

2014: The Tigers announce their four-man rotation for the ALDS.
It consists of 3 Cy Young winners and one future Cy Young winner.
Game 1: @Max_Scherzer
Game 2: @JustinVerlander
Game 3: @DAVIDprice14
Game 4: @RickPorcello

2017: Andrew Romine plays nine positions.

2022: The Dodgers become only the third team in the history of the National League (and seventh in the majors) to win 110 games in a season with a 6 - 4 win over the Rockies. Only the 1906 Cubs and 1909 Pirates have preceded them in the senior circuit.

2023: With all the Postseason participants already decided, attention turns to an otherwise meaningless game between the Tigers and Guardians at Comerica Park as it marks the final major league appearance of two beloved figures: Miguel Cabrera, DH'ing for the Tigers, the last man to win the Triple Crown in 2012, and Terry Francona, managing the Guardians, the man who broke Boston's historic World Series drought in 2004 and almost did the same for Cleveland in 2016. Cabrera goes 0 for 3 and plays a third of an inning at his old position, first base, recording an unassisted putout on the only ball hit to him, before leaving the game to a huge ovation as Detroit wins, 5 - 2. Both men are likely to end up in Cooperstown in short order.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Today marks the last day of Miguel Cabera?s career with the Tigers. He was simply one of the very best men to don the Olde English D, setting a number of offensive records and winning a bevy of significant awards.

Miggy had a number of years where he simply was MLB?s best hitter. He was part of the glory years from 2008 through 2016.

But injuries during that time caught up with him. He last played a defensive position back in 2019 and has DH?d for the past 4 years. Because of his injuries and their impact on both his defensive and offensive games, his WAR has been in the negative range since 2017.

In addition to his arbitration salary, Cabrera signed 2 contract extensions with the Tigers worth over $400 mill, taking him to age 40. When you add in the monetary incentives he received for winning all those awards and nominations plus the $8 mill buyout he will get this year, Detroit has paid him somewhere close to $500 mill.

Overall, his salary for each of those 16 years works out to approximately $31 mill/year.

Some of those years were highly productive. Some of them were not. There is always a gamble when players receive long-term contracts that take them to what is an advanced age for athletes.

And there has been that question as to whether his salary, which was the majority of the entire team payroll for a number of years, stymied the team from signing other players as well as slowing down the rebuilding process.

If you had it to do all over again, would you have signed Miggy to that 2nd contract extension back in 2014? It was done 2 years in advance and covered the 2016 through 2023 seasons (8 years). The contract was for an additional $248 mill.

The contract extension offer came in early 2014 after winning back-to-back MVP Awards and the exclusive Triple Crown last won almost half a century ago.

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

If you had it to all over again, would you have signed Miggy to that 2nd contract extension back in 2014?

1. Yes, it was important to ensure that Miggy remained a Tiger.

2. No, I would have waited until his current contract was almost over and then decided.

The Tigers won four straight AL Central championships from 2011-14. Miguel Cabrera hit .333 with 143 home runs, 490 RBIs and a 1.000 OPS in 629 games.

"We had a pretty good team in Detroit," Victor Martinez said. "He made everybody else look like shit. That's how good he is."

The Tigers (78-84) finished the season with their best record and highest place in the standings since 2016. They went 18-10 in September and October; 39-34 after the All-Star break; and 76-75 following a 2-9 start to the season in April.

The paid attendance of 41,425 on Sunday was the Tigers? second straight sell-out at Comerica Park. It?s the first time that the Tigers have had consecutive home sellouts since August 26-28, 2014, against the Yankees.

October 2 in Tigers and mlb history:

1908: Addie Joss of the Cleveland Naps tosses a perfect game against the Chicago White Sox. The future Hall of Famer wins a 1 - 0 decision over Ed Walsh in one of the greatest pitching duels in major league history. Joss strikes out only three batters, while Walsh fans 15.

1919: The Chicago White Sox lose the second game of the World Series, 4 - 2, to the Cincinnati Reds. Lefty Williams, one of eight Sox players involved in a Series-fixing scandal, walks three men in the fourth inning. After the game, he is confronted and attacked by Sox catcher Ray Schalk.

1921: The Tigers get 11 hits, and set a franchise record with 1,723 hits on the season, a record that still stands.

1927: at Navin Field: On the final day of the season, Harry Heilmann pounds out seven hits in a doubleheader sweep of Cleveland and edges Philadelphia?s Al Simmons for the batting crown .398 to .392.

1934: The Philadelphia Phillies drafted Chet Morgan from the Detroit Tigers in the 1934 rule 5 draft.

1935: The Tigers drop Game 1 of the World Series, 3-0. Pete Fox has 2 of the Tigers' 4 hits. Lon Warneke pitches the shutout for the Cubs.

1938: Hank Greenberg has 4 hits in a doubleheader in Cleveland, but none of them leave the yard. He finishes the season with 5 homerless games to remain at 58, two behind Babe Ruth's season record of 60. "I ran out of gas," he told Lawrence Ritter.

1940: The Tigers exploded for 5 runs off starter Paul Derringer in the 2nd inning, sending him to an early shower and giving Detroit a 7-2 win in the first game of the 1940 World Series. A capacity crowd of 31,793 at Crosley Field saw the Reds' vaunted pitching and defense struggle.
Billy Sullivan Jr. starts at catcher for the Tigers. His father played for the White Sox in 1906: they become the first father-son duo in World Series history.

1949: The New York Yankees win the American League pennant by defeating the Boston Red Sox, 5 - 3. Jerry Coleman's three-run triple provides the winning margin, while Ted Williams falls short of both the batting title and the Triple Crown.

1949: George Kell wins the batting title over Ted Williams by a margin of .3429 to .3427.

1953: Carl Erskine of the Brooklyn Dodgers sets a World Series record with 14 strikeouts in Game Three at Ebbets Field against the New York Yankees. Brooklyn wins, 3 - 2, behind Erskine's six-hit pitching.

1962: The Detroit Tigers released Sam Jones.

1963: Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers sets a World Series record by striking out 15 batters in Game One against the New York Yankees, beating the record set by Carl Erskine 10 years ago on this day. The Dodgers win the game, 5 - 2, behind Koufax' six-hit pitching.

1966: Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers wins his 27th game of the season and the final game of his career. Koufax's 6 - 3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies clinches the National League pennant for the Dodgers.

1968: In one of the most memorable World Series performances ever, Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals strikes out 17 Detroit Tigers. Gibson sets the World Series record for most strikeouts in a single game, set on this day in 1963 by Sandy Koufax, and leads the Cardinals to a 4 - 0 victory over Tigers ace and Cy Young and MVP Awards winner Denny McLain.

1972: Mickey Lolich strikes out 15, Al Kaline and Aurelio Rodriguez get 3 hits each. Tigers are one win away from the division title.

1974: Hank Aaron hits his final home run as a member of the Atlanta Braves, who defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 13 - 0. Phil Niekro pitches the shutout for his 20th win of the season.

1974: Future Hall of Famer Al Kaline announces his retirement. During a 22-year career with the Detroit Tigers, Kaline compiled in 2,834 games, 1,622 runs, 3,007 hits, 498 doubles, 75 triples, 399 home runs, 1,582 runs batted in, 972 extra base hits, 4,852 Total Bases, and a final line of .297/.376/.480/.856 along with 10 Gold Glove Awards. He also batted .379 in the 1968 World Series. Kaline was a Perennial All-Star voted to 18 mid-summer games, and most of all his final numbers ranked in the top 5/10/15/20 at the time of his retirement.

1976: Mark Fidrych holds the Brewers to 5 hits and one run in a complete game to end an unforgettable rookie season with 19 wins.

1984: Tigers 8 - Royals 1. Alan Trammell goes 3-for-3 with a triple and a home run. Jack Morris holds the Royals to 1 run over 7 innings.
Tigers take a 1-0 lead in the ALCS

1985: Darrell Evans hits his 40th home run, becoming the first player to hit 40 in both leagues (hit 41 with the Braves in '73).

1987: Tigers edge the Blue Jays 4-3 to tie them for first place in the AL East with 2 games to play.

2002: Wendell Magee of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2005: Warren Morris of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2006: Colby Lewis of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2006: Bobby Seay of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2011: The Tigers get a dominant outing by Max Scherzer to beat the Yankees, 5 - 3, and even their ALDS at one game each. Scherzer does not allow a hit until the 6th inning, while Miguel Cabrera puts the Tigers ahead with a two-run homer off Freddy Garcia in the 1st inning. Closer Jose Valverde struggles a bit in the 9th, giving up a home run to Nick Swisher and a triple to Jorge Posada, but ends the game with the tying run on base.

2012: the Tigers clinch the AL Central. Miguel Cabrera goes 4-for-5 with his 44th home run.

2014: The Orioles take Game 1 of their ALDS, 12 - 3, over the Tigers. The game is close until the O's score 8 times in the bottom of the 8th to run away with the score, but before that, Nelson Cruz opens the score with a two-run homer off Max Scherzer in the bottom of the 1st, and J.J. Hardy hits a solo shot off Scherzer in the 7th to make it 4 - 2. Chris Tillman is the winner.
Victor and J.D. Martinez go back-to-back in Game 1 of the ALDS, making it the 2nd time in postseason history players with the same last name went deep consecutively. Frank and Brooks Robinson had last done it in 1966.

2016: Tigers lose their season finale 1-0 to the braves, eliminating them from the wild card race.

2017: Matt den Dekker of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2017: John Hiller is inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.

2020: Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, who spent his entire career with the Cardinals, whose 1.12 ERA in 1967 remains an iconic number, and who was only the second man to record 3,000 strikeouts, passes away from pancreatic cancer at 84.
