1915: In a loss to the Indians, Detroit Tigers speedster Ty Cobb steals his 96th base of the season. Cobb's 96 steals will stand as a major league record until 1962.

1921: New York is host to the first one-city World Series since 1906 and the Polo Grounds is the site for all nine games. Carl Mays of the Yankees needs 86 pitches to set the Giants down on five hits, four of them by Frankie Frisch, as Babe Ruth drives in the first run of the Series in the opening inning of the 3 - 0 Yankees win.

1926: In Game 3 of the World Series, Jesse Haines pitches a five-hit shutout as the Cardinals beat the Yankees, 4 - 0, to take a 2-1 lead in the Series.

1928: In the World Series, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees unloads a three-run home run in the 1st inning of Game 2. 1929: New York Giants Mel Ott and Chuck Klein of the Philadelphia Phillies go into a head-to-head doubleheader tied at 42 home runs apiece. In the opener, Klein homers for the Phillies off Carl Hubbell in his first at-bat to take the home run lead.
In the nightcap, Phillies pitchers intentionally walk Ott five times rather than give him a chance to tie Klein. The last walk comes with the bases loaded. Lefty O'Doul of the Phillies has six hits on the day for a National League season-record of 254 hits.

1935: Charlie Gehringer's RBI double lifts the Tigers to a 2-1 win at Wrigley Field and a commanding 3-1 lead in the World Series.

1939: Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig pose before Game 2 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium! This is the last time Lou would wear the Yankees pinstripes. Yankees pitcher Monte Pearson does not allow a base hit until one out in the 8th inning as he shuts out Cincinnati, 4 - 0. Babe Dahlgren hits a home run and a double as the Yankees take a 2-0 Series lead.

1941: In the World Series, Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Mickey Owen drops a third strike on Tommy Henrich in what would have been the final out of a Dodgers victory against the New York Yankees. Given a second chance, the Yankees then rally for a 7 - 4 win to take a 3-1 Series lead.

1942: Whitey Kurowski hits a two-run home run in the 9th inning of Game 5, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 4 - 2 victory to capture the World Series over the Yankees.

1945: Claude Passeau of the Chicago Cubs pitches a one-hitter, beating the Detroit Tigers 3 - 0 in Game Three of the World Series.

1947: Left fielder Al Gionfriddo makes a spectacular catch and robs Joe DiMaggio of a game-tying home run in Game 6 of the World Series. The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Yankees, 8 - 6.

1949: In Game 1 of the World Series, Allie Reynolds and Don Newcombe are locked in a scoreless duel in the bottom of the ninth inning, until Tommy Henrich leads off with a walk-off home run, the first in World Series history, and the Yankees beat the Dodgers, 1 - 0.

1951: New York Yankees rookie Mickey Mantle wrecks his knee when his cleat gets caught on a Yankee Stadium drain cap after Joe DiMaggio abruptly calls for a Willie Mays fly ball during Game 2 of the World Series!

1952: In Game 5 of the World Series, Brooklyn wins 6 - 5 in 11 innings over the Yankees when Billy Cox scores the winning run behind an RBI double hit by Duke Snider. Carl Erskine pitches a complete game to give Brooklyn a 3-2 Series lead heading back to Ebbets Field.

1953: The New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 6 of the World Series. Billy Martin collects his 12th Series hit, a single to center field in the bottom of the 9th inning, that gives the Yankees their fifth World Championship in a row. Carl Furillo had tied it up in the top of the 9th with a two-run home run.

1954: Oscar Charleston, one of the greatest players in the history of the Negro Leagues, dies in Philadelphia, days after he had fallen down a flight of stairs. He was 57 years old.

1957: New York Yankees star Mickey Mantle and Milwaukee Braves star Henry Aaron each hit a HR in Game 3 of the World Series at County Stadium!

1958: The Detroit Tigers purchased Pete Burnside from the San Francisco Giants.

1960: In a portent of things to come, Bill Mazeroski's two-run 5th-inning home run off Jim Coates is the difference as Pittsburgh beats the Yankees, 6 - 4, in its first World Series win since 1925.

1966: With 1st-inning home runs by Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson, and 11 strikeouts from relief pitcher Moe Drabowsky, the Baltimore Orioles win their first World Series game, 5 - 2, over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1967: Jim Lonborg of the Boston Red Sox pitches a one-hit, 5 - 0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals to tie the World Series, 1-1.

1968: Tim McCarver and Orlando Cepeda each hit three-run home runs to lead the Cardinals to a 7 - 3 win over Detroit.
The Cardinals quickly acclimated to Tiger Stadium, hitting a pair of three run HRs to beat the Tigers in Game 3 and take a 2 games to 1 lead. The Tigers are now looking at the prospect of having to beat Gibson or go down 3 games to 1.

1981: The Detroit Tigers released Mark Fidrych. Due to injuries, he made only 27 appearances in four seasons after his magical rookie year in 1976.

1984: Pitchers Milt Wilcox and Willie Hernandez combine on a three-hitter to give the Detroit Tigers a 1 - 0 win and a sweep of the Kansas City Royals in the ALCS. The Tigers are going to the World Series!
Sparky: "The night belonged strictly to Milt Wilcox. Period. He showed exactly what guts and determination mean in this game".
There were 36 cases of champagne on hand and all the bottles were dry by the time the clubhouse had finally cleared.

1987: The Seattle Mariners traded Stan Clarke to the Detroit Tigers for Bruce Fields.

2002: The Anaheim Angels shock the New York Yankees by scoring eight runs in the 5th inning and going on to a 9 - 5 victory. The victory gives Anaheim its first postseason series victory ever, as they win their ALDS matchup, 3 games to 1. Shawn Wooten hits a home run for Anaheim while Jorge Posada adds a round-tripper for New York. Jarrod Washburn gets the victory for the Angels.

2004: Craig Dingman of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2004: John Ennis of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2006: Tigers even the ALDS: Curtis Granderson's triple in the 7th inning of Game 2 drives home the winning run.

2010: Enrique Gonzalez of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2014: Both American League Division Series end in three-game sweeps. The Orioles defeat the Tigers, 2 - 1, behind the pitching of Bud Norris and a two-run homer from Nelson Cruz to finish one ALDS sweep,
and the Royals pound the Angels, 8 - 3, in the other ALDS. Alex Gordon hits a three-run double and Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas homer, while 'big shit' James Shields confirms the appropriateness of his nickname.

2017: The Detroit Tigers released Brett Pill.

2017: Jose Altuve has a gigantic game, hitting three homers, to lead the Astros to an 8 - 2 win over the Red Sox in Game 1 of their Division Series. Justin Verlander continues his excellent work since having been acquired in a trade on August 31st by notching the win with six solid innings of work, while Chris Sale is hit hard in getting saddled with the loss.

2020: The Supreme Court agrees to allow a class-action suit originally launched in 2014 by minor league players in three states, Arizona, California and Florida, claiming they were paid below minimum wage and in violation of other labor laws. Major League Baseball had asked the court to dismiss the suit, which will now proceed in trial court.

2022: On the last day of the season, Luis Arraez wins his first American League batting title, going 1 for 1 with two walks to finish at .316 and deprive Aaron Judge of a potential Triple Crown; the average is the lowest by an AL batting champion since Carl Yastrzemski hit .301 in 1968 - the so-called "Year of the Pitcher". In the National League, Jeff McNeil finishes at .326, one point ahead of Freddie Freeman, to also win his first title.

LOOSE ENDS.
Totally Tigers

It has been nearly a year since the Detroit Tigers? PoBO Scott Harris officially started his duties. Upon being hired in late September 2022, he took a number of weeks to explore each department and meet with employees before making any moves.

Harris implemented a number of changes to the organization in his first year but try as he might, there are still a number of factors he inherited from his predecessor that are difficult to either solve or remove. Especially when they pertain to the players Al Avila acquired.

Starting this week and running through the winter, he, new GM Jeff Greenberg and manager A. J.Hinch will have to decide how to handle each. Whether they can maximize their performances or are better off without them on the roster.

There are 4 players at the forefront of their decisions. Let?s review each along with the factors that need to be considered.

October 6 in Tigers and mlb history:

1887: Detroit Wolverines get their 79th win of the year, 7-6 in Indianapolis. They will finish 79-45 atop the National League. They actually had more wins the year before in a 87-36 campaign, but finished second to the 90-34 Chicago White Stockings.

1908: Tigers beat the White Sox 7-0 on the final day of the season to clinch the pennant by a half game and head to their second straight World Series.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DK6ofB5XcAMUCv2.jpg

1926: Babe Ruth hits three home runs to lead the Yankees to a 10 - 5 victory over St. Louis in Game 4 of the World Series. His 1st-inning curtain-raiser is a majestic 395-footer, exiting Sportsman's Park over its right field bleacher roof. Home run number 2 clears the roof in right center, carrying 515 feet, breaking a window on the other side of Grand Avenue. Ruth's final foray, however, is the main attraction, carrying deep into the never-before reached centerfield bleachers, far beyond the 430-foot mark. Estimated at 530 feet, it is deemed the longest home run in World Series history.
Ruth, however, not content to dominate offensively, also delivers a crucial outfield assist, cutting down a runner at the plate, ending the Cardinals' 3rd-inning rally. In the words of broadcaster Graham McNamee, "Babe Ruth nor no other man ever made a better throw. Babe shot it like an arrow and Hank Severeid did not have to move for it."
If all this weren't enough, this also is the game during which the Babe makes good on his alleged pre-game promise to hit a home run for the bedridden young Johnny Sylvester.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F7wWZhjXsAAQv50?format=jpg&name=medium

1929: Tigers hit 3 triples in season finale, a loss to the white sox, and finish with 543 extra base hits, still a franchise record.
Dale "Moose" Alexander hits a home run in the final game of his rookie season. Still holds Tigers rookie records for BA (.343), hits 215, and RBI 137.
Charlie Gehringer goes 2-for-5 with a double, finishes season with AL lead or tie in runs 131, hits 215, doubles 45, triples 19, and SBs 27.
Roy Johnson goes 3-for-5 with a double & triple. Johnson, who was part Cherokee and born on a reservation in Oklahoma, finishes with 201 hits, the first rookie in major league history to get 200 hits. His 45 doubles are still a Tigers rookie record.

1934: Tigers beat the Cardinals 10-4 in Game 4 to draw even in the World Series. Hank Greenberg goes 4-for-5 with 2 doubles and a stolen base.

1935: The Tigers score all 4 of their runs in the in 4th inning for a 4-1 win in Game 4 to draw even in the World Series.

1939: Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig pose before Game 2 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. It's the last time Lou would wear the #Yankees pinstripes.

1940: At Briggs Stadium, Bobo Newsom beats Cincinnati 8-0, in Game 5 of the World Series as 55,189 look on.
Newsom pitches a complete game shutout. Hank Greenberg hits a 3-run home run.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DLdiBkyUQAApSWP.png

1945: A goat and its owner make an appearance at Wrigley Field for Game 4 of the World Series. The pair is told to leave before the game ends, angering the owner. The Chicago Cubs lose to the Detroit Tigers, 4 - 1. Detroit will go on to win the Series in seven games and the Cubs won't win another National League championship for the rest of the 20th century. A belief that the Cubs were cursed by the goat will eventually develop.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F7wXM0yWMAAx4J7?format=png&name=small

1946: First game of 1946 World Series and Cardinals have the shift on for Red Sox great Ted Williams. The Kid would go 1 for 3 in a Boston 3-2 win in 10 innings. Check out the mound and and circle around it that has no reason being there.

1948: In the opening game of the World Series, the Boston Braves beat Bob Feller and the Cleveland Indians, 1 - 0, with only two hits and the benefit of a disputed call on a pick-off attempt in the 8th inning by Feller.

1957: In Game 4 of the World Series, the Yankees are down, 4 - 1, with two outs in the top of the 9th when Elston Howard slugs a tying three-run homer off Warren Spahn of the Braves. The Yankees take the lead in the 10th on Hank Bauer?s triple off Spahn, and are about to go up 3-1 in the series, but Milwaukee rallies in controversial fashion.
Nippy Jones leads off the bottom of the 10th and takes Tommy Byrne?s low pitch for a ball, but he argues that the ball hit him on the foot. He shows home plate umpire Augie Donatelli a smudge of shoe polish on the ball, and Donatelli reverses his call. Two batters later, Johnny Logan ties the game with a double off Bob Grim, then Eddie Mathews blasts a walk-off two-run homer to tie the series, which the Braves will win in seven games.

1960: Giddy following their team's Game 1 win over the heavily favored Yankees, Pirate fans are in for a brutal reality check, as the Big Apple Goliath walks over Steeltown's David, 16 - 3, to even the World Series at one all. This utterly uncontested affair is little more than batting practice for the Bombers, highlighted by two tremendous opposite field blasts by Mickey Mantle, the latter of which, measured at 478 feet, proves historic ? the first time within memory that any right-handed batter has hit a ball out of Forbes Field to the right of dead center.

1963: Frank Howard leads the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2 - 1 win over the New York Yankees with a home run and a single, giving the Dodgers a four-game sweep in the World Series.

1966: Jim Palmer, at age 20, becomes the youngest pitcher with a World Series shutout as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6 - 0. Sandy Koufax is the loser in his last appearance in the major leagues. Dodgers outfielder Willie Davis commits three errors on successive plays in the 5th inning.

1968: Bob Gibson and the Cardinals pound the Tigers 10-1 at Tiger Stadium to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the World Series.

1971: The Detroit Tigers released Dean Chance.

1985: New York Yankees pitcher Phil Niekro becomes the 18th 300-game winner as he blanks the Toronto Blue Jays, 8 - 0, on the last day of the season. At age 46, Niekro also becomes the oldest pitcher to throw a shutout in major league history; he will eventually be passed by Jamie Moyer on May 7, 2010.

1991: Tigers play the final game at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore and beat the orioles 7 - 1. Frank Tanana with the CG.

2001: Todd Helton becomes the first player in major league history to have consecutive seasons with 400 or more total bases. His 7th-inning double gives him exactly 400 bases this year.

2006: Tigers shut out the Yankees at Comerica Park to take a 2-1 lead in the ALDS. Kenny Rogers pitches 7+ shutout innings, Curtis Granderson hits a home run for the Tigers, who score 5 runs off Yankees starter Randy Johnson.

2009: Detroit loses, 6 - 5, to Minnesota in a one-game playoff to determine the winner of the AL Central title. Alexi Casilla singles home the winning run with one out in the 12th inning. The Tigers had led the division by 3 games with 4 to play, and were ahead by 7 games on September 6 before sputtering down the stretch. Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera, under a swirl of controversy over allegations of impaired driving and domestic violence, hits an early home run to put Detroit ahead, but is thrown out at home by Nick Punto in the top half of the 12th. It is the last regular-season game to be played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

2009: Dane Sardinha of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2010: Casey Fien of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2011: The Detroit Tigers signed Sandy Baez as an amateur free agent.

2011: The Tigers eliminate the Yankees in the ALDS for the second time in five years, taking advantage of back-to-back 1st-inning homers by Don Kelly and Delmon Young off Ivan Nova, to win, 3 - 2, in the decisive Game Five. Nova is lifted in the 2nd inning, while Doug Fister and three relievers manage to quiet the Yankees' bats to make the lead hold. Closer Jose Valverde remains perfect for the season, picking up the save with a perfect 9th inning at New Yankee Stadium.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EGDKsa-X...pg&name=medium

2012: In the first game of the ALDS, Justin Verlander of the Tigers gives up a home run to the first batter of the game, Coco Crisp, but goes on to strike out 11 over 7 innings, not giving up another run to the Athletics. The Tigers get the run back in the bottom of the 1st, take the lead with a 3rd-inning score, and complete the tally when C Alex Avila homers off Jarrod Parker in the 5th for a 3 - 1 win.

2014: Danny Worth of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2015: The Astros open the 2015 Postseason by defeating the Yankees, 3 - 0 in the American League Wild Card Game. Dallas Keuchel pitches 6 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits and a walk while striking out 7, while his opponent, Masahiro Tanaka, allows a pair of solo homers and is charged with the loss.

2017: The NLDS game between the Cubs and the Nationals is a true pitchers' duel between Kyle Hendricks and Stephen Strasburg. Chicago does not get its first hit until 2 are out in the top of the 6th, by Kris Bryant, but it scores Javier Baez who had reached on an error by 3B Anthony Rendon. Bryant takes second on the throw from the outfield and scores on Anthony Rizzo's single, and those two unearned runs are all Chicago needs, as they go on to win 3 - 0 and Washington only manages 2 hits.

2021: JaCoby Jones of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2021: The Dodgers, winners of a club record 106 games during the regular season, win the National League Wild Card Game, although they need a Hollywood ending. The game is tied 1 - 1 into the 9th inning, and both experienced starters, Max Scherzer and Adam Wainwright, are long gone when Chris Taylor ends the game by hitting a two-run walk-off homer with two outs off Alex Reyes for a 3 - 1 win.

2022: Miguel Del Pozo of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2022: Dustin Garneau of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

The 2023 season is over for the Detroit Tigers. The first year that PoBO Scott Harris came on board and started to guide this team differently.

It takes multiple years to reassess, rebuild and re-energize a team in search of becoming competitive. One can?t make a definitive statement about progress after just 1 year.

But we can look at what is going on throughout the organization in order to obtain hints.

And that?s what we are going to do today.

Here are the 5 biggest clues I?m seeing that support the premise about the Tigers getting back on track towards a successful rebuild.

Mario Impemba speaks To all Tigers fans:

Just a note to express my appreciation for all of the support you have given me this week.

It has been five seasons since I left the Tigers booth and in that time your loyalty has never wavered.

Your support over my nearly two decades in the booth, and especially the last few days, is something that I will always remember.

Tigers fans are truly unmatched.

All my best.

1969: The St. Louis Cardinals trade outfielder Curt Flood to the Philadelphia Phillies in a blockbuster deal involving slugging first baseman Richie Allen. Flood will refuse to report to the Phillies and will take baseball to court over the reserve clause that binds a player perpetually to one team.

1972: Tigers open the ALCS in Oakland with a 3 - 2 loss. Rollie Fingers gets the win. Norm Cash and Al Kaline hit home runs.

1975: The Boston Red Sox gain a 5 - 3 win and a three-game sweep over the Oakland Athletics to catch the American League pennant. Carl Yastrzemski makes two great plays in the outfield and has two hits to back pitcher Rick Wise.

1982: The San Diego Padres purchased Elias Sosa from the Detroit Tigers.

1985: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later, Juan Berenguer and Bob Melvin to the San Francisco Giants for Eric King, Dave LaPoint and Matt Nokes. The Detroit Tigers sent Scott Medvin (December 11, 1985) to the San Francisco Giants to complete the trade.

1987: Don Baylor singles to break an 8th-inning tie and Gary Gaetti homers in his first two playoff at-bats as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers, 8 - 5, in the opening game of the American League Championship Series.

1988: The Detroit Tigers released Chris Bando.

2001: On the last day of the season, Rickey Henderson of the San Diego Padres bloops a double down the right field line off Colorado Rockies pitcher John Thomson to become the 25th major leaguer to collect 3,000 career hits. Tony Gwynn, who is playing in his last major league game and is also a member of the 3,000 hit club, meets Henderson at home plate in front of a sell-out crowd QualComm Park.

2001: The San Francisco Giants' Barry Bonds extends his major league record for home runs in season to 73 as he drives a 3-2 1st-inning knuckleball off Dodgers pitcher Dennis Springer over the right field fence. The blast also secures two more major league records for Bonds as he surpasses Babe Ruth - who slugged .847 in 1920 - with a .863 season slugging percentage and bests Mark McGwire, who in 1998 hit one HR every 7.27 at-bat by homering in every 6.52 at-bats.

2002: Seth Greisinger of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2005: The Detroit Tigers released Gary Knotts.

2006: The Tigers beat the Yankees 8-3 to win the ALDS. Magglio Ordonez and Craig Monroe hit home runs. Kenny Rogers dominates the Yanks in Comerica, Rogers pitched 7.2 shutout innings, striking out 8 batters.

2011: The Cardinals cause a huge upset by shutting out the Phillies, 1 - 0, in Game 5 of the NLDS. Chris Carpenter is the hero, tossing a three-hit complete game on the road and besting Phillies ace Roy Halladay. The Cards score the game's only run in the 1st inning when Rafael Furcal leads off the game with a triple and Skip Schumaker follows with a double.

2012: The Tigers take a two games to none lead in the ALDS on Don Kelly's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th which scores Omar Infante to close a 5 - 4 win over Oakland. Detroit scores in each of the last three innings to pull out the win. It's the Tigers' 5th walk-off postseason win in franchise history.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers finished 2023 with a 78 wins ? 84 losses season. Their win/loss percentage was .481 and they finished in 2nd place in the AL Central.

They won 12 more games (and 12 fewer losses) than in 2022. It was their best record since 2016.

And unlike the previous year when they added multiple new free agents, PoBO Scott Harris did not add anyone of note, instead depending upon young players and smaller trades.

Taking into account all factors ? including Harris? first year on the job, the expected introductory year of re-assessment, injuries, player development, stats, etc. ? what kind of a grade would you give the 2023 season?

What final grade would you give the Detroit Tigers for the 2023 season?

1. High marks

2. Respectable marks

3. Solid C grade

4. Below average
