Born in Russia, Starffin moved to Asahikawa, Hokkaido at a young age, and was picked as part of the national baseball team for an exhibition game against the United States in 1934. From 1936 through 1955 he will win 303 games, the first pitcher in Japanese baseball to top the 300 mark.

1944: Frankie Sinkwich runs for two touchdowns and kicks 3 extra points as the Lions win 21-7 at Briggs (Tiger) Stadium.
They beat the Card-Pitts, a wartime merger of the Cardinals and Steelers, nicknamed the "carpets," who went winless that year.

1952: The Baseball Writers Association of America name Philadelphia Athletics pitcher Bobby Shantz the American League Most Valuable Player. Shantz posted a 24-7 record with 152 strikeouts and a 2.48 ERA during the regular season.

1958: New York Yankees pitcher Bob Turley, who had 21 wins and 19 complete games, is named the Cy Young Award winner. With only one award given for the two leagues, Turley gathers five votes to four for last year's winner, the Milwaukee Braves' Warren Spahn.

Hentgen (with a 20-10 mark), the major league leader in complete games, outpoints Pettitte (21-8) by the narrow margin of 110-104. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera finishes third in the ballot and receives one first-place vote.

1997: Ken Griffey, Jr. becomes the ninth unanimous pick for the American League MVP Award. Griffey hit .304 for Seattle, led the AL with 56 home runs, and led the majors with 147 RBI. DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Several days ago, the Detroit Tigers hired Jason Benetti to become their new play-by-play man on tv. Benetti has an impressive resume and is regularly ranked near the top of MLB broadcasters.

He is a Chicago guy, having broadcast many of the city?s sports, including the last 8 years for the White Sox. He also has a national tv contract to broadcast MLB games.

Until Jason came along, the Tigers have had a strong Detroit presence in the booth. There will be others joining him but it is unclear at this point who will be chosen.

Should it be one of the current former Tigers? Or should Benetti be paired with someone who is more experienced and compatible? Someone with no Tiger ties?

In Chicago, Jason took over for Ken Harrelson and was paired with Steve Stone as his color man. Stone played only 2 separate years for the White Sox and his baseball background includes playing for 3 other teams.

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Who would be the best fit to join Jason Benetti in the tv broadcast booth?

1. A former Tiger player.

2. A non-Tiger who best complements Benetti's broadcast style.

Scott Harris Likes Reese Olson?s Ceiling.
Fangraphs

Reese Olson has a chance to be a top-of-the-rotation starter in Detroit, and it is notable that the Tigers acquired him via trade. On July 30, 2021, then-general manager Al Avila dealt Daniel Norris to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for the now-24-year-old right-hander, who at the time had a 4.30 ERA in High-A and was flying below most prospect radar. Talented but raw, he ranked seventh in a system that wasn?t particularly well-regarded.

Olson made his MLB debut this past June, and by season?s end he was showing signs that he could emerge as a No. 1 or a No. 2.on a promising young staff. Over his last six starts, the plain-spoken Gainesville, Georgia native allowed just 18 hits and six earned runs in 35-and-two-thirds innings. On the year, he had a 3.99 ERA and a 4.01 FIP to go with a 24.4% strikeout rate and a .214 BAA. He fanned 102 batters in 103-and-two-thirds innings.

Scott Harris doesn?t believe in labels like No. 1 starter or No. 2 starter. He does believe in the fast-rising righty.

?Reese has three distinct secondary pitches that miss bats,? Detroit?s President of Baseball Operations told me at this week?s GM meetings. ?That?s really hard to find. He also has two different fastballs that reach the upper 90s. I also think he did some things this summer that reminded me of what other really good pitchers do in their first year in the big leagues. I?m not going to throw those expectations on him, but his ceiling is as high as anyone?s.?

Asked if he could elaborate on ?what other really good pitchers do in their first year,? the exec explained that Olson had stretches of dominance within games that didn?t necessarily translate into a dominant line. Like many young pitchers, he would string together ?three, four innings of truly dominant stuff, then make a couple of mistakes in the zone that lead to home runs.? Harris viewed that as a source of optimism. To him, it suggested that the young hurler was an adjustment away from having dominant stretches for entire starts, if not months or longer.

Olson was coming off of a stellar start ? six scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins ? when I talked to him at Fenway Park in mid-August. I?d first spoken to him a handful of days after he?d been dealt to Detroit, so I asked him what has changed since his 2021 stint with the West Michigan Whitecaps.

?I added a sinker this year,? said Olson, who was then 175 pounds and is now a sturdier 185. ?Other than that, the arsenal is the same. I?ve just got much better command. That just comes from getting older and stronger and not having to put as much effort into it. I don?t know that I?d say I used to force effort, but I was a little smaller, trying to throw hard.?

Olson averaged 94.8 MPH with both his two- and four-seam fastballs, with the former serving as a primary weapon against right-handed hitters. His slider, which he spun at 2,989 RPM, was his most-used pitch overall. Augmenting those offerings were a 2,800-rpm curveball and a changeup. All five pitches in his repertoire yielded a .280-or-lower wOBA.

His approach on the mound is basically to attack hitters with his five-pitch mix, balancing scouting reports with how well each one is working on a given day. His demeanor on the mound is much the same as what it is is off the field.

?I like to keep it simple,? said the even-keeled Olson. ?Calm down. Don?t get too jacked up. That?s kind of me out there.?

There?s always the possibility, of course, that another club will pry Rowson away with for a more prominent role. In addition to his three seasons as a bench coach in Miami, he?s also previously interviewed for the Twins? managerial vacancy that went to Rocco Baldelli and was reportedly one of three finalists in the Red Sox? most recent managerial search. That only speaks to how well regarded Rowson is throughout the industry, however.

1900: The National League rejects the American League as an equal, declaring it an outlaw league outside of the National Agreement, thus inaugurating a state of war. This follows the AL's announcement two days ago that it has made arrangements to go into Washington, DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Two weeks later the American Association makes it a three-way battle, but that third circuit will remain a minor league.

This time, Williams beat out Detroit Tigers ace pitcher Hal Newhouser, a two-time winner of the MVP award who finished second in the balloting.

Deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 draft is 6pm.

The Tigers currently have a full 40-man roster, so some roster shuffling will need to take place. There's a few obvious names that are expected to be protected (Flores & Dingler). Does anyone else get protected?

Still expecting just RHP Wilmer Flores, C Dillon Dingler, and possibly lefty reliever Andrew Magno to be added to the Tigers 40-man

While we wait for the Tigers to release their Rule 5 adds, here's some fun stuff.

Looking at inning 7 and later, Torkelson hit the most HRs with 11. He's followed up by Kerry Carpenter (8) and Jake Rogers (7). Any guesses who 4 and 5 would be and how many HRs they hit?

The Tigers have signed outfielder Bligh Madris to a minor-league contract.

The Tigers claimed Madris off waivers last winter, then put him back on waivers six weeks later, ultimately sending him to the Astros for cash considerations.
