November 15 in Tigers and mlb history:

1945: The rules are revised for election of modern players to the Hall of Fame. A runoff election is formulated as a way to qualify more players for selection, but it fails to meet its objective as no one reaches the 75 percent requirement in the runoff. Former players Frank Chance, Johnny Evers and Ed Walsh and former manager Miller Huggins come closest.

1948: The Detroit Tigers drafted Bob Hooper from the New York Giants in the 1948 minor league draft.
1948: The St. Louis Cardinals drafted Ed Mierkowicz from the Detroit Tigers in the 1948 minor league draft.

1950: The Detroit Tigers signed Earl Johnson as a free agent.

1951: New York Giants outfielder Willie Mays is named the National League Rookie of the Year.

1951: The Baseball Writers Association of America name Gil McDougald of the New York Yankees as American league Rookie of the Year. The Chicago White Sox object to McDougald's accolade, offering the statistical accomplishments of their superlative rookie, Minnie Mi?oso.

1957: Milwaukee Braves star Hank Aaron is named National League MVP (44 HR - 132 RBI - .322 BA).

1961: For the second consecutive year, New York Yankees outfielder Roger Maris is named American League Most Valuable Player. The new single-season home run record holder with 61 edges his teammate Mickey Mantle by four points, 202-198. Jim Gentile of the Baltimore Orioles finishes third with 157 points.

1962: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Don Drysdale wins the 1962 Cy Young Award, outpolling Jack Sanford of the San Francisco Giants with 14 of 18 votes.

1967: Future Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox is the overwhelming selection as American League MVP. He receives all but one first place vote in the balloting, the other vote going to Minnesota's Cesar Tovar. Yastrzemski, who led the AL in batting average (.327), home runs (44) and RBI (121), will be the last major leaguer to win the Triple Crown in the 20th Century.

1972: Dick Allen of the Chicago White Sox wins the American League MVP Award by an overwhelming margin over Joe Rudi of the Oakland Athletics. Allen led the AL in home runs (37), runs batted in (113), walks (99) and slugging average (.603).

1983: Shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles is named the Most Valuable Player in the American League. Ripken, who led the league in hits and runs scored, becomes the first major league player to win the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards in back-to-back seasons.

1987: Bill Laskey of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1988: Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kirk Gibson wins the National League MVP Award, edging out New York Mets OFs Darryl Strawberry.

1992: Jeff Kaiser of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1999: The Detroit Tigers signed Luis Polonia as a free agent.

2001: New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, who posted a 20-3 record with 213 strikeouts and a 3.51 ERA, wins the American League Cy Young Award for an unprecedented sixth time. Previously, Clemens captured the award with the Red Sox in 1986, 1987 and 1991, and the Blue Jays in 1997 and 1998. He becomes the first Yankees pitcher to win the award since 1978 when Ron Guidry copped the honor. In the 2004 season, Clemens will win his seventh Cy Young in the National League with the Houston Astros.

2002: The San Diego Padres traded Gene Kingsale to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Rivera.

2003: The Detroit Tigers signed Guillermo Rodriguez as a free agent.

2004: San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds, who is the only player to be the National League Most Valuable Player more than three times, is named by the Baseball Writers Association of America for a record seventh time, including an unprecedented fourth consecutive season. Bonds finished 2004 with a .362 batting average, 45 home runs and 101 RBI. Winning the honor at the age of 40, Bonds surpasses Willie Stargell (39) as the oldest player to win the award.

2005: St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols earns the National League MVP Award, edging Atlanta Braves center fielder Andruw Jones. Pujols was among the NL leaders in most hitting categories and finished with a .330 batting average, 41 home runs and 117 RBI

2005: After months of deadlock, leaders of Major League Baseball and the players union reach an agreement to clean up a performance-enhancing drug scandal that has tarnished the nation's pastime and left lawmakers worried about young athletes imitating the wrong role models. It will require baseball players to submit to several drug tests each year, during and between seasons, and will impose lengthy suspensions for steroid and amphetamine use.
Repeat offenders can be banned for life. The agreement, which must be ratified by both the players and baseball owners, is similar to a proposal offered earlier this year by commissioner Bud Selig.

2005: The Detroit Tigers signed Mike Hessman as a free agent.

2007: Barry Bonds is arraigned on five counts of perjury and obstruction of justice for his involvement in the federal investigation of BALCO.

2011: Detroit's Justin Verlander is the unanimous winner of the 2011 American League Cy Young Award. Verlander won the Pitching Triple Crown by leading the AL in wins with a 24-5 record, in ERA at 2.40 and in strikeouts with 250.
Justin is the 12th pitcher to win Pitching's Triple Crown.
Verlander also threw his second career no-hitter on May 7th.

2012: In what is portrayed as a classic dispute between defenders of traditional statistics and supporters of sabermetrics, 3B Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers wins the 2012 American League Most Valuable Player Award over Rookie of the Year OF Mike Trout of the Angels by a score of 362 to 281. Cabrera was the first winner of a Triple Crown in 45 years, but Trout finished ahead of him in more advanced measures of a player's value.
Miguel receives 22 of the 28 first-place votes. The Tiger third baseman winning the triple crown in 2012, is the first time that had happened in 45 years.
Miggy is the first Detroit position player since Hank Greenberg in 1940 to win the award.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.

Tuesday night was the deadline for teams to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft, which is held next month. If a team selects another organization?s player, they must pay his original team $100,000 and keep him on the 26-man roster for the entire season. He can also be returned but there is a penalty fee of $50,000.

Not all teams participate. In general anywhere from approximately 10-15 organizations join in each season.

Al Avila participated every year. This past season, Scott Harris did. The team?s selections have been as follows:

2016 ? Daniel Stumpf

2017 ? Victor Reyes

2018 -Reed Garrett

2019 ? Rony Garcia

2020- Akil Baddoo

2021 ? draft cancelled

2022 ? Mason Englert

Should the Detroit Tigers participate again this year? Is it worthwhile to grab talent that is inexperienced and takes up a roster space?

Or do the Tigers need to advance more quickly by putting more developed players on the roster?

Do they have enough talent ready to be promoted for the 2024 season?

These are the questions that will keep discussions going all day long here as well as with your friends.
Should the Tigers participate in this year?s Rule 5 draft?

Should the Detroit Tigers participate in the Rule 5 draft this year?

1. Yes

2. No

2001: The Detroit Tigers signed Julio Santana as a free agent.

2001: A Minnesota judge issues a temporary injunction that orders the Twins to play their full home schedule and prevents owner Carl Pohlad from selling the team to anyone who will move it. While this ruling will be appealed, it will be difficult to get the injunction overturned in enough time to contract the Twins for a potential 2002 season.

2005: Broadcaster Ralph Edwards, dies today in Los Angeles, CA at age 92; he was considered the voice that launched the Jimmy Fund, the children's cancer-fighting charity long favored by the Boston Red Sox.

2005: Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who was the runner-up in the American League Most Valuable Player voting this week, is second-to-none in the voting for the top two awards given by the Boston chapter of the BBWAA. Ortiz will be given the Ted Williams Award as the top hitter in the major leagues, along with the "Yawkey Award" as the Red Sox MVP at the Boston BBWAA's annual dinner on January 12, 2006. Ortiz hit .300 with 47 home runs and a major league-leading 148 RBI this season. He also had 34 RBI that put his team ahead, the most in the AL, and 8 RBI from the seventh inning on that gave Boston the lead for good.

2006: The Detroit Tigers signed Sean Casey as a free agent.

2010: Roy Halladay wins the National League Cy Young Award in his first season with the Philadelphia Phillies after leading the NL in wins, complete games, shutouts and innings pitched, throwing a perfect game, and, for good measure, adding a no-hitter in the postseason. He is the fifth pitcher to win the award in both leagues, having been honored in the American League in 2003.

2011: The Manager of the Year Awards go to Kirk Gibson of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League and the Tampa Bay Rays' Joe Maddon in the American League. Gibson wins in his first full season as a skipper, while it's a second time for Maddon to receive the award.

2011: The Detroit Tigers signed Omir Santos as a free agent.

2012: The Tigers sign free agent outfielder Torii Hunter to a two-year, $26 million deal. Hunter will play right field and help the team to two division titles while becoming a popular veteran leader on the club.

2016: Winners of the Cy Young Awards are announced today. Max Scherzer of Washington becomes the 6th pitcher to win the award in both leagues when he prevails in the vote in the National League after going 20-7 during the season.
In the American League, Boston's Rick Porcello, who went 22-4, is the winner over Justin Verlander of the Tigers in a very close race due to two Shithead Tampa sportswriters who leave Verlander completely off their ballot.
Porcello becomes the fourth member of the Tigers' 2014 rotation to win a Cy Young.

2017: Giancarlo Stanton wins the 2017 National League Most Valuable Player Award over Joey Votto in a very close vote, 302 points to 300, with both players receiving 10 of 30 first-place votes. The result in the American League is not as disputed, as Jos? Altuve wins easily.

2018: For the first time since 2005, the Tigers did not have a player or manager receive a yearly award vote from the Baseball Writers? Association of America.

2021: The Detroit Tigers signed Eduardo Rodriguez as a free agent.

2022: Both winners of the Cy Young Award this year are chosen by unanimous vote. In the American League, Justin Verlander wins the award for the third time by going 18-4, 1.75 after missing the entire 2021 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. In the National League, Sandy Alcantara is chosen after posting a 2.28 ERA and 6 complete games, the highest total in years.

2023: The voting for the MVP Award results in two unanimous selections. In the American League, Shohei Ohtani wins for the second time, after leading the circuit in homers in spite of missing the final month of the season with an injury, while incidentally also being the best pitcher on the Angels. In the National League, Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves, who had a 40-40 season and led the league in a half-dozen offensive categories, is honored.

2023: By unanimous vote, MLB owners approve the relocation of the Oakland Athletics to Las Vegas, NV, to be effective in 2028.

FIRST LOOK AT THE 2024 ROSTER.
Totally Tigers

It is officially the Hot Stove season. Well, at least teams are loading up their stoves with wood and about to light their matches.

Which brings us to the start of that great baseball tradition.

Speculation.

What do we think the Detroit Tigers will do?

We?ve been given a few clues.

The success of the Arizona Diamondbacks after just recently tanking got Tiger fans buzzing. Afterall, they won just 6 more games last year than Detroit.

But Scott Harris quickly put the brakes on fans? expectations. Fans who are thinking that it?s now time to start buying expensive free agents.

He pointed out by saying ?But, as this game has taught us time and time again, sometimes, teams over-estimate their proximity to being a team that?s right on the verge of the playoffs, and they spend a lot of money and it doesn?t push them forward. It pushes them back.?

A thinly veiled reference to what Al Avila did back in 2022, resulting in a significant backslide in the standings and an action that got him fired. He had spent over $248 mill of Chris Ilitch?s money on free agent contracts ? and got 96 losses in return.

Harris explained that building a winner ? especially a consistent winner ? takes more than buying expensive players.

The Tigers are not yet close enough where a prominent free agent is going to push them over the edge into contention.

It?s not that easy.

Harris continued ?We have to be really careful. This is an organization that?s pointed in the right direction. But, we can?t do anything in free agency or in trades that sets us back. If we find an opportunity that?s going to push us forward and we?re confident of that, we?re going to do it.?

So what will the Tigers do this off-season? To answer that, let?s look at what the roster is likely to resemble.

There are reports that Bally Sports is getting ready to dump 2 more MLB teams' broadcasts - Guardians and Rangers. Further stories have them going belly up by the end of 2024 and not broadcasting any MLB teams. What does this mean for the Detroit Tigers?

We may have been given a clue with the news that the Tigers are picking up new broadcaster Jason Benetti's entire salary. Maybe they're looking to have a smooth transition when Bally goes belly up. But will the Tigers once again start exploring their own broadcast network.
