Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

May 26 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: In one of the few games in which both pitchers, Christy Mathewson and Grover Cleveland Alexander appear as relievers in a 5 - 3 victory for the New York Giants over the Philadelphia Phillies.

1925: In a Detroit 8 - 1 victory over the White Sox, Ty Cobb becomes the first major leaguer to collect 1,000 career extra-base hits. He will finish with 1,139.

1930: Joe Sewell of the Cleveland Indians strikes out twice facing lefthander Pat Caraway of the Chicago White Sox. It is the last time the Indians third baseman will fan this year, striking out only three times in 353 at-bats in the season.

1946: Having launched a lunar expedition out to somewhere well beyond Forbes Field's distant left-center bricks just four days ago on May 22nd, Josh Gibson dispatches an only slightly less ambitious mission into the right-center bleachers of Yankee Stadium, leading the Homestead Grays to an 11 - 8 triumph over New York Black Yankees and
into first place in the Negro National League. This makes it four wins in a row for the Grays, three of them over the cellar-dwelling Yankees. The Baltimore Afro-American estimates Gibson's blast at 440 feet, hailing it as "one of the longest ever hit at Yankee Stadium."

1946: Mel Ott retires from playing and decides only to manage the New York Giants. He has amassed a total of 2 hits in his 42 at-bats, and if his resulting .048 batting average does not amount to "hitting bottom", Ott, understandably, does not want to find out what does. Mel retires with 511 home runs and over 1800 runs and 1800 rbi to go with a career .304 BA. and over 5,000 total bases.

1950: The Philadelphia Athletics make some changes as a result of a front office coup. Connie Mack's son, Earle, who has been assistant manager, assumes the duties of chief scout. Earle, who had hoped to succeed his father as manager, is replaced by Jimmy Dykes. Mickey Cochrane is named general manager.

1956: Al Simmons dies in Milwaukee, at the age of 54. A former Philadelphia Athletics All-Star outfielder, Simmons hit .334 with 307 home runs and 1827 RBI in a 20-season major league career that included stints with six other teams besides the A's. Simmons gained induction into the Hall of Fame in 1953. Simmons held the American League record for most hits in a career by a right handed batter, that was later broken by Tigers great Al Kaline in 1974.

1958: The St. Louis Cardinals traded Barney Schultz to the Detroit Tigers for Ben Mateosky (minors).

1959: Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches one of the most remarkable games in major league history. Haddix tosses 12 perfect innings, retiring the first 36 Milwaukee Braves batters he faces, before losing the perfect game in the 13th inning when Felix Mantilla reaches first base on an error. After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk to Hank Aaron, Haddix surrenders an apparent three-run home run to Joe Adcock. Aaron leaves the field, and Adcock passes him on the basepaths. Adcock's blast is called a double as Mantilla scores the winning run. Lew Burdette of the Braves goes all the way for a 12-hit, 1 - 0 shutout.

1959: Ed Walsh dies in Pompano Beach, at the age of 78. Walsh started a brief but remarkable pitching career in 1904 with the Chicago White Sox. From 1906 through 1912, he averaged 24 wins with 220 strikeouts and posted an ERA below 2.00 five times. Walsh was selected to the Hall of Fame in 1946.

1962: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax strikes out 16 Philadelphia Phillies to lead his team to a 6 - 3 victory.

1962: Al Kaline of the Detroit Tigers fractures his collarbone while making a dramatic game-saving catch in right field. Kaline has helped preserve a 2 - 1 victory over the New York Yankees but he will miss two months with the injury.
At the time of this injury, Kaline was leading the American league in the Triple Crown. Kaline plays in 100 games and hits 29 Home Runs with 94 RBI.

1968: The rotten bastard Oakland A's are at it again; A's pitcher Jack Aker hits Tigers batter Jim Northrup in the head. That begins a brawl, that began from yesterday when Al Kaline's arm was broken by huge shithead Lew Krausse's pitch.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4xwKQxWAAYzRHF.jpg

1969: Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hits his 500th career double, becoming only the third major leaguer to reach 500 doubles and 500 home runs.

1984: Mariners hand the Tigers their second straight loss. Juan Berenguer pulled in the 1st after 4 runs. Rusty Kuntz & Kirk Gibson hit home runs. The Tigers score 3 in 9th but still lose big to fall to 35-7.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DeJJ3ybVQAAnhmI.jpg

1987: Tigers win 8 - 7 over the rangers on a walk-off double by Kirk Gibson in the 11th inning to climb above the .500 mark for the first time this month. Gibson & Mike Heath homer for the Tigers. Dan Petry gets the win, Mike Henneman the save.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EY8_GDHX...jpg&name=small

1995: The Tigers beat the White Sox 8-7. Trailing in the 9th, Kirk Gibson pinch-hit for Juan Samuel, despite Samuel having 3 hits and a home run. Kirk Gibson hit a walk-off 2-run homer off closer Roberto Hernandez.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FTiXp5WW...jpg&name=small

1995: Ken Griffey of the Seattle Mariners fractures his wrist while making a spectacular catch against Kevin Bass of the Baltimore Orioles. Some observers call it the greatest catch they've ever seen. Griffey will undergo surgery on his injured wrist and miss the next three months of action.

2005: The Detroit Tigers released C.J. Nitkowski.

2005: Chico Carrasquel dies in Caracas, Venezuela, at the age of 77. Carrasquel, the first in a great line of Venezuelan shortstops that includes Luis Aparicio, Dave Concepci?n, Ozzie Guillen and Omar Vizquel, became the first Hispanic player to appear in an All-Star Game, in 1951, at Briggs Stadium.

2017: Ex-Tigers, Phillies, Hall of Famer Jim Bunning, who won over 100 games in each league, pitched a No-Hitter in each league , one a perfect game, and 1,000 plus Strikeouts in both leagues, and later served in Congress as both a Representative and Senator from Kentucky, passes away at the age of 85.

2019: The Detroit Tigers selected Austin Adams off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.

2020: The Players Association's initial reaction to the owners' latest financial proposal to re-start the season in one of "extreme disappointment". The owners are asking players to accept further salary cuts (in addition to being paid a pro-rated portion of their salaries, as already agreed upon) to compensate for anticipated lower revenues, with the players being paid the most taking the biggest salary cuts.

2021: Commissioner Rob Manfred issues his ruling following the completion of the investigation of allegations of improper behavior towards a number of women against former manager and coach Mickey Callaway. Callaway is found guilty of violating Major League Baseball policies and is declared ineligible for the remainder of this season and all of 2022, after which he may apply for reinstatement. For their part, the Angels fire him from his position of pitching coach, from which he has been suspended since the allegations surfaced in February, and the Indians, who were Callaway's employer when some of the offensive incidents took place, state that they will take steps to ensure a more respectful environment in which employees feel empowered to denounce workplace harassment in the future.

2023: Craig Kimbrel becomes the eighth pitcher to record 400 career saves in Philadelphia's 6 - 4 win over the Braves, barely two weeks after Kenley Jansen became the seventh.

2023: The Detroit Tigers purchased Lael Lockhart (minors) from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

SHORT AND SWEET.
Totally Tigers

Normally this is the day where we engage in extended conversations about the Detroit Tigers. But on this holiday weekend, we’re going in the opposite direction.
Now that the Detroit Tigers have played nearly one-third of the season, what are your thoughts and feelings about what you’ve seen so far?
But here’s the catch: You have to sum up it all up in just 1 word. One word only.

The Red Sox and Tigers both joined the American League in 1901. Boston batters have hit 14,405 home runs. Detroit batters have hit 14,400 home runs.

There were 11,111 home runs hit at Tiger Stadium (1912-1999). There were 13,457 home runs hit at Fenway Park over that span.

1898: Detroit (Western) purchased John Ganzel from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EZDJzf4X...g&name=360x360

1909: In an American League game featuring a major league record-setting 44 assists by both teams, the Cleveland Naps defeat the St. Louis Browns, 5 - 2. The National League-high assist marks of April 23, 1903 and May 15, 1909 (both between the New York Giants and Cincinnati Reds) fall short of today's record. Addie Joss for Cleveland and Barney Pelty for St. Louis are the pitchers as each team records 22 assists.

1921: Ty Cobb and Frank Navin Contract Signing for $30,000.

1937: Carl Hubbell earns his 24th consecutive victory over two seasons and Mel Ott hits a 9th-inning home run as the New York Giants defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 3 - 2. Hubbell wins the game in relief. His 24-win string started on July 17, 1936.

1939: For the first time in his career, Charlie Gehringer of the Detroit Tigers hits for the cycle, in a 12 - 5 win against the St. Louis Browns. Gehringer does it in order - single, double, triple, home run. and becomes the 4th major league player and 2nd Tiger to hit for a natural cycle (single, 2B, 3B, & home run in order).

1960: Baltimore Orioles catcher Clint Courtney uses an oversized mitt in an effort to handle the pitches of knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm. The mitt, designed by Baltimore manager Paul Richards, is 50 percent larger than the standard. Courtney handles Wilhelm's pitches flawlessly in a 3 - 2 win over the Yankees. The oversized mitt will later be banned.

1968: Major League Baseball expands outside the confines of the United States as the National League announces expansion for the first time in seven years, awarding franchises to Montreal as well as San Diego, to begin play next season.

1968: Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Frank Thomas, born this day in Columbus, GA.

1968: Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell, born this day in Boston, MA.

1979: The Chicago White Sox purchased Milt May from the Detroit Tigers.

1980: The Detroit Tigers traded Jason Thompson to the California Angels for Al Cowens.

1991: The Tigers beat the Brewers 15-9 in 14 innings! Both teams scored 4x in the 6th, the Tigers 2 in the 8th, Brewers 3. Tigers got 7 in the 14th! Andy Allanson, Mickey Tettleton & John Shelby homered for Detroit. Travis Fryman had 4 hits & Cecil Fielder drew 5 walks.

1997: Ken Griffey, Jr. of the Seattle Mariners breaks his own major league record for home runs hit through May by connecting for his 23rd of the season in an 11 - 10 loss to Minnesota. Griffey breaks the mark he set in 1994 with 22 homers.

2000: The St. Louis Cardinals pay tribute to Dizzy Dean by dedicating a statue of the Hall of Fame pitcher by sculptor Harry Weber outside Busch Stadium. Dean joins Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst, Enos Slaughter, Bob Gibson, and Lou Brock who have also been honored in such a manner.

2000: The Cincinnati Reds retire the Number 24 jersey worn by Hall of Famer Tony Perez, making it just the sixth to be retired by the oldest professional baseball organization. The former first baseman joins Fred Hutchinson (1), Johnny Bench (5), Joe Morgan (8), Ted Kluszewski (18) and Frank Robinson (20) in this hallowed club.

2003: The Milwaukee Brewers traded Alex Sanchez to the Detroit Tigers for Chad Petty (minors) and Noochie Varner (minors).

2003: In Atlanta, Georgia, the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals upholds a decision preventing the Florida attorney general from investigating Major League Baseball's 2001 attempt to eliminate two teams. The 11th circuit decision, by Judges Gerald B. Tjoflat, Susan H. Black and Richard W. Goldberg, is based on the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and state law rather than the sport's antitrust exemption and is considered to be a major victory by the commissioner's office.

2004: Carlos Pena of the Detroit Tigers goes 6 for 6 with two home runs, five RBI and four runs in a 17 - 7 victory over Kansas City. Pena becomes the fourth Tiger to get 6 hits in a 9-inning game. Tigers tie a team record with 27 hits.

2011: The Detroit Tigers traded Scott Sizemore to the Oakland Athletics for David Purcey.

2012: Quintin Berry becomes the first Tiger since 1918 to get a hit in his first five major league games.

2016: The Detroit Tigers released Alberto Gonzalez.

2016: Michael Fulmer retires 14 of the first 15 batters he faces in 7+ shutout innings in the Tigers' 4-1 win in Oakland.

2017: Tigers draw 9 walks but are shut out by the White Sox 3-0 in Game 1 of a doubleheader.
Buck Farmer strikes out 11 in 6 shutout innings in the Tigers' 4-3 win in Game 2.

2019: The Detroit Tigers selected Austin Adams off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.

2021: The Cubs' Javier Baez is at the center of one of the wildest baserunning plays anyone has ever seen. With two outs in the 3rd inning and Willson Contreras on second base, he hits what looks like a routine inning-ending grounder to third base. However, Pirates 3B Erik Gonzalez throws wildly to first base, pulling 1B Will Craig off the bag, towards home. Baez abruptly stops running, and retreats towards home, and Craig, instead of simply touching the nearby bag to end the inning, begins to chase him. Meanwhile, Contreras has never stopped running and is about to cross home plate. Craig sees him and relays to C Michael Perez, but his throw is high and Contreras slides safely under the tag. Seeing this, Baez, who has practically returned to home plate by that point, turns around again and dashes back towards first base. Had 2B Adam Frazier thought to cover the bag, Baez would have been put out easily and Contreras' run would have been erased, but Frazier is still dashing to reach the base as well, and Perez's throw ends up in right field. Not only is Baez not put out, he makes it all the way to second base on a play that brings back fond memories of Little League baseball mayhem to everyone who witnesses it.

2022: The Detroit Tigers released Ramon Rosso.

1905: Brooklyn Superbas right-hander Elmer Stricklett throws a "mystery pitch" - believed to be a spitball - during a game against the New York Giants. Some historians regard the 5' 6" Stricklett is the first pitcher to throw a spitball in a major league game.

1916: Christy Mathewson pitches a 3 - 0 shutout over the Boston Braves, leading the New York Giants to their 17th consecutive victory, all on the road. In spite of their impressive winning streak, the Giants will finish second to the Brooklyn Robins in the National League pennant race.

1922: The United States Supreme Court finds that baseball is primarily a sport and not a business in its ruling on the Federal Baseball Club v. National League case. In using this argument, the court rules that baseball is not subject to antitrust laws nor to standard interstate commerce regulations.

1922: The Browns top Detroit 9 - 6 paced by Ken Williams' grand slam in the 3rd inning. Harry Heilmann and Ty Cobb get into an argument with the umpires and will be suspended missing tomorrow's twinbill.

1928: At Yankee Stadium the Yankees sweep a pair from Washington 3 - 2 and 12 - 3. Leo Durocher's bases-loaded triple in the opener gives George Pipgras (8-1) the win. Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth both slug a pair of homers in the nitecap: Lou hits his 9th in the 3rd off Washington starter Milt Gaston then Ruth and Gehrig hit back-to-back dingers in the 4th off Lloyd Brown. Ruth adds his 18th off Brown in the 7th. Earle Combs also homers.

1929: Detroit's George Uhle notches his 9th consecutive win of the year beating the Browns 7 - 6. Marty McManus has 3 hits including a home run and double for the Tigers.

1932: The Red Sox split a pair with the visiting A's winning, 6 - 4, before losing, 3 - 0. It is the Sox's last Sunday game at Braves Field. With the lifting of the ban against playing Sunday ball at Fenway Park (because of a nearby church) the Sox will play a Sunday game there July 3rd.

Meanwhile the Giants lose a shot at another young Birmingham player as Braves scout Dewey Griggs signs Henry Aaron to a contract. The Indianapolis Clowns receive telegram offers from both clubs and Aaron thinking he'll have a better chance to make the team prefers the Braves.

1954: The Detroit Tigers traded Matt Batts to the Chicago White Sox for Red Wilson.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers recently received their City Connect uniforms. They are supposed to wear them for each Friday night home game only.
The new togs have created some friction with fans. They are black and blue with a tire mark print all over. The jerseys say “Motor City” while the hats say “Detroit.”

The white home uniform tradition is gone (at least on Friday nights) and the Olde English D is missing.
However, the Tigers have started winning games while wearing the new uniforms. They are (through Sunday’s game) 4-1.
This past weekend, the team voted to wear them again on Saturday – and won again. They did the same for Sunday with another win. And for Tuesday’s game, they will once again don the City Connect uniforms.
Today’s poll is a tough one. It involves a deal with the Devil.

If you were promised that the Tigers would play above .500 for the rest of the season while wearing the City Connect uniforms every day – and forsaking the traditional one – would you agree to the deal?
It would mean that the Olde English D would remain in the clubhouse lockers for the rest of the year.

If promised that the Tigers would play above .500 this year, would you agree to them wearing the City Connect uniforms for every game?

1. Yes, sign me up for the City Connect uniforms!

2. No, there are some things that cannot be bought. Keep the Old English D.
