June 1 in Tigers and mlb history:

1906: Women appear at the Polo Grounds ticket windows for the first time. Coincidentally, new ticket-selling machines are also introduced.

1910: The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 10 - 5, before a chilly crowd of 800 fans at the Baker Bowl. It is the 14th loss for the Phillies in their last 15 games. The Cardinals are paced by leadoff hitter Miller Huggins, who has no official at bats in six plate appearances, the first time this has ever happened in major league history. Huggins walks in his first three at-bats, hits a sacrifice fly and a sacrifice bunt in the next two, and walks with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to drive in the lead run. At the end of the season, Huggins will lead the National League with 116 walks.

1917: Hank Gowdy of the Boston Braves became the first major leaguer to enlist in World War I. Gowdy will also serve in World War II.

1923: Scoring in every inning, the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies at the Baker Bowl, 22 - 8. It is the first time in 20th century a team has scored in every inning.

1925: Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees pinch-hits for Pee Wee Wanninger, beginning his streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games. The next day, first baseman Wally Pipp shows up with the after-effects of a concussion, and Gehrig takes over.

1955 - Duke Snider hits three home runs at Ebbets Field, helping the Brooklyn Dodgers to an 11 - 8 victory over the Milwaukee Braves. The Dodgers also set a franchise record with six home runs.

1958: Al Kaline homered to lead off the bottom of the second inning against Chicago's Ray Moore but the game was rained out after 3 1/3 innings. This homer would have given Kaline 400 for his career.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Earlier this week, Detroit Tigers’ PoBO Scott Harris gave an interview on national tv. When asked if the Tigers were going to start spending on some free agents, Harris said this in his many statements:
“We’re not quite there yet as far as spending at that level because we need to build the foundation of this team to put us in a position to supplement it with some free agency signings in upcoming winters.
“We just have to develop the core that we’re going to spend around, and we also have to target the players in upcoming winters that can really help us.”

He appeared to indicate that the Tigers weren’t close to competing for at least several years because they had not yet developed the core of the roster. Of course, he also hinted that the team was not prepared to spend some significant dollars on free agents as a result.

What is your take upon reading this?
Are you surprised at his statements? Shocked even?
Or did his comments validate your observations about how this roster is being built and how much work the new Front Office has to do?

What was your reaction to Scott Harris' statements?

1. Not surprised at all. This club still has a long way to go.

2. Somewhat surprised. I thought the club was further along.

3. Shocked. I thought the club would be competing in the near future.

The Dodgers win the game, 2 - 1, in 12 innings, while recording a team-record 26 strikeouts and both teams combine for a National League record 42 whiffs.
Cody Bellinger homers in the top of the 12th for Los Angeles, while winner Kenley Jansen has now struck out 36 batters without issuing a single walk this year, a major league record.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Last week, Detroit Tigers’ PoBO Scott Harris made these statements about the Tigers’ roster, core players and timeline of adding free agents:
“We’re not quite there yet as far as spending at that level because we need to build the foundation of this team to put us in a position to supplement it with some free agency signings in upcoming winters.
“We just have to develop the core that we’re going to spend around, and we also have to target the players in upcoming winters that can really help us.”

So where do you think the Tigers are in the development of their core?
Are they still in the process of evaluating the potential of all their young players?
Do they have only a handful (3-5) of players they believe will be part of the long-term future?
Do they believe that they’ve got at least 6 -7 players who will become the foundation of the team?

Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!
For this one blog only, you’ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

Matt Vierling has been swinging a hot bat with the Detroit Tigers. Over his last 11 games, the 27-year-old third baseman/outfielder is 16-for-41 with four doubles, a triple, four home runs, and 13 RBIs. His slash line over the span is .390/.435/.829 bringing his seasonal mark to a solid .292/.324/.509. While by no means an offensive force, he has nonetheless been an integral part of the lineup. Since being acquired by Detroit from Philadelphia prior to last season as part of the five-player Gregory Soto swap. Vierling has the second-most hits (175) on the team, and a respectable 106 wRC+.

Defensive versatility adds to Vierling’s value — his big-league ledger includes games at 3B, 2B, CF, RF, and LF — and there is a chance that another non-DH position could eventually be added to the list. Given the right circumstances, he might even pitch. It would be familiar territory. Vierling thrived on the mound as a prep, then was a two-way player at the University of Notre Dame from 2016-2018.

A Perfect Game showcase in Minneapolis is a standout memory for the St. Louis, Missouri native. Vierling recalls Carson Kelly’s brother, Parker, being one of his teammates, while Ke’Bryan Hayes and Josh Naylor — “I pitched against him if I remember correctly” — were among his notable opponents. Playing well against that type of talent garnered him attention from colleges and professional scouts alike, and while his bat showed promise, it was the arm that stood out the most.

“I was getting more looks to be a pitcher than a position player, so I guess that means I was a better a pitcher,” reasoned Vierling. “I had a big fastball — I was 94-95 [mph] — although I would only hold my velocity for a few innings, then it would drop down. I was also more of a thrower than a command guy, and the other stuff wasn’t really there. When I got to college, I started trying to refine that more.”

The refinement yielded middling results. Vierling put up good offensive numbers over this three collegiate season — a .300 batting average, 25 home runs, and an .849 OPS — but his pitching numbers were nothing to write home about. Over 26 relief appearances comprising 26-and-a-third innings, he allowed 37 hits and logged an 8.89 ERA.

Which isn’t to say he didn’t have his moments.

“I remember getting us out of a big jam against Florida State,” recalled Vierling, who had four wins, four losses, and two saves during his time with the Fighting Irish.”I struck out Cal Raleigh. That was a cool moment, even though I ended up going out for a second inning and giving up a walk-off hit. Another time I got us out of a big jam against Miami. It was cool to experience being a two-way guy, but to be honest, I don’t remember all that many fun pitching moments in college. It was a pretty clear that my future was as a position player.”

One who would enjoy taking the mound in pro ball?

“I haven’t done that, but I’d love to go out there and see what I’ve still got,” said Vierling. “Actually, I’d probably just do the position-player mop-up thing and throw it over the plate. I think that would more effective than if I went out there and threw 85-86 right down the middle, or tried to gas it up. They’d be ready for that.”

Any knuckleballs?

“No knuckleballs,” Vierling said to my suggestion. “I’ve never been able to figure that one out.”
