July 10 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: Sherry Magee, star OF for the Phillies, knocks out umpire Bill Finneran with one punch after being ejected for disputing a called third strike. He is suspended for the season, but upon appeal he will be reinstated after five weeks and 36 games. The Phils win, 4 - 2, behind Grover Cleveland Alexander, who strikes out 9.

1914: Detroit's Billy Purtell and Marty Kavanagh combine to nab Eddie Collins with the hidden ball trick. It comes in the 9th inning and helps preserve an 8 - 8 tie with Philadelphia.

1916: For the second time this season, White Sox pitchers toss shutouts in a doubleheader, this time against the Red Sox. Lefty Williams wins, 4 - 0, then Reb Russell follows with a 3 - 0 victory. With the temperature at Fenway Park in the 90s, this is the first of three consecutive doubleheaders for the two Sox.

1920: After banging out 11 straight hits, Tris Speaker is stopped by Tom Zachary of Washington. It's the record until Pinky Higgins of the Red Sox will rack up 12 in a row in 1938. Speaker will hit .388 for the season.

1932: Indians fly chaser Johnny Burnett collects a record nine hits in 11 at-bats in an 18-inning game iin which the A's outscore the Tribe, 18 - 17. Jimmie Foxx hits 3 home runs, and has 16 total bases and 8 RBI for the A's. After Philadelphia starter Lew Krausse is knocked out in the 1st inning, Eddie Rommel is forced to hurl 17 innings in relief as manager/owner Connie Mack, trying to save train fare, has brought only two pitchers; Rommel gives up a record 29 hits.

1934: The second annual All-Star Game produces Carl Hubbell's amazing feat of striking out five future Hall of Famers in a row. Charlie Gehringer singles off Carl Hubbell, off to a shaky start with two on base in the first inning, Hubbell uses his screwball to fan Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx. He adds Al Simmons and Joe Cronin to start the second. After three scoreless innings he leaves with the National League ahead, 4 - 0. The American League rallies, scoring nine runs off Lon Warneke, Van Mungo and Dizzy Dean, while Mel Harder pitches five shutout innings in relief of Red Ruffing to hold the lead. Frankie Frisch and Joe Medwick hit homers. Earl Averill's three RBI are decisive for the AL's 9 - 7 victory.

1935: The Tigers' 10 game win streak ends, despite a record-tying 10 doubles in a 12 - 11 loss in Washington.

1936: At Forbes Field, Chuck Klein hits 4 home runs in one game, including the tie-breaker in the 10th, helping the Phillies defeat the Pirates, 9 - 6. The Indianapolis, Indiana native barely misses hitting an additional homer in the 2nd when right fielder Paul Waner catches his drive against the wall. At 36, Klein is the oldest player ever to hit four homers in a game, and the first National Leaguer in the 20th century to do so.

1945: The All-Star Game at Fenway Park is canceled because of travel restrictions. During the break in the schedule, 7 inter-league games are played for war charity. Plans for a USO-sponsored all-star game in Europe do not materialize, although the war in Germany is over and fighting in the Pacific will be over in 6 weeks.

1948: For the 6th time this year, Vern Stephens and Bobby Doerr of the Red Sox hit back-to-back homers as Boston beats the 2nd-place A's, 4 - 0. Jack Kramer scatters nine hits in the shutout to win his 7th straight. Ted Williams sits out the game with a damaged ligament, the result of being hit in the ribs while playfully sparring with Sam Mele on the train down from Boston yesterday.

1951: 2nd All-Star Game at Tiger Stadium. Ty Cobb throws out 1st pitch. Tigers George Kell and Vic Wertz only AL-ers to hit HRs. Using four home runs from Stan Musial, Bob Elliott, Ralph Kiner and Gil Hodges, the National League All-Stars defeat the American League at Detroit's Briggs Stadium in the 1951 All-Star Game. Kiner hits a home run for the third year in a row.

1953: The Detroit Tigers selected Ralph Branca off waivers from the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1954: Andre Dawson - "The Hawk" - is born in Miami, FL. A graceful centerfielder with the Montreal Expos who will become a slugging rightfielder and owner of one of the most powerful throwing arms in baseball with the Chicago Cubs, Dawson will win the 1987 National League Most Valuable Player Award with the Cubs and gain election to the Hall of Fame in 2010.

1956: In the 1956 All-Star Game, Ken Boyer of the Cardinals makes three sparkling plays at 3B and gets 3 hits as the National League defeats the American League, 7 - 3. Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams and Stan Musial all homer. Mays's pinch-hit 2-run home run off Whitey Ford is his 7th straight hit against the Yankee lefty.

1960: Harmon Killebrew of Senators and Tigers catcher Hank Foiles can only wait as game is delayed in 12th inning due to heavy fog. Senators won it 5-4 in 15 innings. Foiles in his Tigers debut (traded from Cleveland) cranked out 5 hits.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D_HgA5lXoAAzdN2.jpg

1962: At newly-opened D.C. Stadium, John F. Kennedy becomes the first president ever to throw the ceremonial first pitch at an All-Star Game. Thanks to the game's MVP Maury Wills scoring two of the team's three runs and Willie Mays's amazing game-ending catch, the National League beats the Junior circuit, 3 - 1 in the first of two Mid-Summer Classics to be held this summer.

1968: The American League and National League reach an agreement on next year's expansion format. The twelve teams in each league will be divided into two divisions playing a best-of-five game League Championship Series to determine the pennant winner.
The Tigers are assigned to the new American League East division next season as part of expansion and realignment. They will become the last team to win the AL pennant in the regular season before division winners meet in the LCS.

1977: In the first game of a twinbill with the Brewers, the Red Sox strand a major league-record tying 20 runners, but still win, 8 - 5.

1982: The Rangers' Larry Parrish hits his third grand slam of the week in a 6 - 5 win over the Tigers, tying the major-league record set by Detroit's Jim Northrup in 1968. Parrish also hit grand slams on July 4th against Oakland and July 7th against Boston. Parrish will manage the Tigers in 1998-99.

1984: Tigers send 6 All-Stars to #ASG at Candlestick Park. Jack Morris pitches 2 scoreless IP. Lou Whitaker goes 2-for-3.

1984: On the 50th anniversary of Carl Hubbell's legendary five consecutive strikeouts in the 1934 All-Star Game, National League pitchers Fernando Valenzuela and Dwight Gooden combine to fan six batters in a row for a new All-Star Game record in the NL's 3 - 1 triumph. After Valenzuela whiffs Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson and George Brett in the 4th inning, Gooden, the youngest All-Star ever at age 19, fans Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon and Alvin Davis in the 5th.

1985: The Tigers beat the White Sox 1-0. Lou Whitaker drove in Tom Brookens in the bottom of the 8th for the game's only run as Jack Morris & Tom Seaver locked in a pitcher's duel.

1990: Six American League pitchers combine for a two-hitter and a 2 - 0 victory over the National League in a rain-delayed All-Star Game at Wrigley Field.

1998: Deivi Cruz hits a walk-off double to score Joe Randa and give the Tigers a 3-2 win over the Blue Jays at Tiger Stadium.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DEYcjoGX...g&name=360x360

1999: The Tigers defeat the Brewers, 9 - 3, before 25,374 fans in Detroit. This enables the club to top the one million mark in attendance for the 35th consecutive season for the longest streak in American League history. The Dodgers hold the record of 55 consecutive years. The Tigers will go on to top 2 million for the first time since 1988.

2001: San Diego Padres legend Tony Gwynn and Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. are honored during the Major League All-Star Game at Safeco Field, Seattle.

2001: The American League defeats the National League, 4 - 1, in the All-Star Game. Baltimore's Cal Ripken Jr. thrills the crowd by hitting a home run and winning the MVP award at the affair. Derek Jeter and Magglio Ordonez also homer for the Junior Circuit.

2005: Justin Verlander pitches in the Futures Game at Comerica Park.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DETv-jUXYAIqS2l.jpg

2007: In the 2007 All-Star Game, Ichiro Suzuki goes 3 for 3 with the first inside-the-park homer in All-Star Game history to win the MVP award. The American League wins for the 10th straight decision, the second-longest run in Midsummer Classic history.

2012: The National League romps past the American League, 8 - 0, in the 2012 All-Star Game, for its third straight All-Star Game win. 11 pitchers combine on a six-hitter, with starter Matt Cain getting the win. Melky Cabrera hits a two-run homer and is named the game's MVP, while a third member of the Giants, Pablo Sandoval, cracks a three-run triple in the 1st. AL starter Justin Verlander is shellacked for five runs in that opening frame.

2013: David Ortiz of the Red Sox becomes the all-time hit leader as a designated hitter when his 2nd-inning double gives him 1,689 safeties, breaking the mark held by Harold Baines. Big Papi then adds a two-run homer in the 3rd, his 8th hit in 9 at-bats, giving further evidence that he will add plenty more hits to the record before he's done. Boston defeats Seattle, 11 - 4.

2015: The Detroit Tigers released Joba Chamberlain.

2019: Jim Bouton, an excellent pitcher as a young man turned knuckleballer after arm injuries cost him his fastball, but better known as the author of Ball Four, one of the best books ever written about baseball, dies at 80. Blackballed by baseball's establishment after his book was published in 1970, he dabbled in acting and sports journalism before making a comeback in 1978 and writing a number of other books, including one on his quixotic fight to preserve a historic ballpark in Pittsfield, MA. He had been suffering from dementia for the past few years.

2021: The Dodgers bang two grand slams, by Justin Turner and Mookie Betts, on a night when they collect 8 homers and 21 hits in defeating the hapless Diamondbacks, 22 - 1. They are the first team to have two games with two slams in the same season, having previously accomplished the rare feat on May 2nd, when A.J. Pollock and Matt Beaty connecting in a 16 - 4 win against the Brewers.

2022: In the 8th inning of their game against the White Sox, Tigers outfielder Robbie Grossman drops a routine fly ball hit by Luis Robert and is charged with his first error since June 13, 2018, ending the longest errorless streak by any player at any position in major league history after 440 games. Worse, the error proves costly as Robert later comes around to score the winning run in a 4 - 2 ChiSox win.

2023: The Detroit Tigers released Steele Walker.

Now that Riley Greene has been selected to participate in this year’s All-Star Game, along with teammate Tarik Skubal, the question about whether he will be invited to play in the Home Run Derby has been brought up.
It is considered to be an honor with an award and $1 million in prize money to the winner. However, in recent years, the HR Derby has earned a reputation of being a “jinx” because of a pattern of participants who go on to have significant downturns in their production for the rest of the season.

It is attributed to the unnatural and manufactured event, the physical stress created and repeated swings with exaggerated launch angles that throws off timing and “messes with the swing.”
The Tigers have not had a representative for this event in over a decade.
If invited, should Riley participate?

Should Riley Greene participate in the Home Run Derby?

The Detroit Tigers exhausted their last hope in an effort to replace Javier Baez at SS after this year. Ryan Kreidler used up his best chance to show he could stabilize the position and got sent down recently.
Kreidler outperformed Baez in spring training and he was told as much. But Baez's contract gave him the job. Unfortunately, Kreidler then broke his hand for the 2nd time and just recently came back from the IL.
Could his injury have factored into his weak performance in Detroit recently? It's highly unlikely he'll be back in Detroit this summer unless he puts up stats that can't be ignored.
No matter what, the Tigers need a solution for next year not named Baez. The Tigers rank as having MLB's worst SS stats by a mile and are about to set a record. Keeping Baez would signal that the Tigers can't pull the trigger for change and prioritize the status quo over winning.

The Detroit Tigers certainly have enough options to play 1B. Vierling is the 4th player now to man the position. If they are training him for this new position, it means that Spencer Torkelson is nowhere near close to returning this season.

Colt Keith is batting .357 (20-for-56) with 5 HR and 10 RBI when batting second in Tigers order, including 11-for-26 with 4 HR since moving into No. 2 spot full-time last week.

According to Stathead, Colt (4) trails only Al Kaline (5) and Willie Horton (7) for the most HRs in a 6 game span for a Tiger player age 22 or younger. First to hit 4 since Omar Infante did in 2004.
Player Batting Span Stats Finder - Baseball | Stathead.com Kaline is all over this graph.

Kenta Maeda (via an interpreter): "There's definitely frustration. Nothing really is going right at this point, and I'm causing too much trouble to the team, and I feel sorry about that."

July 11 in Tigers and mlb history:

1901: The Detroit Tigers signed Davey Crockett as a free agent.

1914: Babe Ruth breaks in with Boston, striking out in his first at bat, but pitching a 4 - 3 win over Cleveland. With the score 3 - 3 in the 7th, Duffy Lewis pinch hits for Ruth, singles, and later scores the winning run.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F0tBRTmXgAcu41O?format=jpg&name=small

1916: The Red Sox sweep the White Sox, winning 5 - 3 and 3 - 1. Babe Ruth starts both games, lasting a third of an inning in the opener, but pitching a 3 - 1 complete game win in the nitecap. Ruth starts the opener to give Rube Foster more time to warm up, and leaves after retiring the first batter.

1917: In Detroit, Boston's Babe Ruth tops the Tigers 1 - 0, allowing just Donie Bush's scratch single in the 8th. Ruth deflects the ball but the throw by the shortstop is too late. A pinch triple by Chick Shorten in the 9th drives home the only run. Ruth strikes out Bobby Veach, Sam Crawford and Ty Cobb in the 9th, for the last. In early 1942, in a speech in Los Angeles, Ruth will call this game his greatest thrill. (The Babe also relates to writer John Carmichael that his greatest game was the "called shot" in the 1932 World Series.)

1923: Harry Frazee, owner of the Boston Red Sox since 1916, sells out for over $1 million to a group of Ohio businessmen, who bring in veteran front office man Bob Quinn from St. Louis to run the club. Frazee's departure is welcomed by Boston fans who are fed up with the sale of Frazee's best players over the years, many of them to the rival New York Yankees.

1925: George Sisler drives in seven runs in two innings, tripling with the bases full in the 3rd and hitting a grand slam in the 4th, in a Browns 10 - 5 win over Washington.

1935: Charlie Gehringer hits his 100th career home run in the Tigers 7 - 6 win over the senators.
Pete Fox's hitting streak that started on June 13 is stopped after 29 games. The Tigers outfielder bats .397 during his streak 54 for 136.

1937: The Detroit Tigers traded Lindsay Brown and cash to the Brooklyn Dodgers for Ralph Birkofer.

1939: With another Yankee-dominated lineup, the American League defeats the National League, 3 - 1, in the seventh All-Star Game, at Yankee Stadium.

1945: Aaron Robinson, Yankees C, returns from the military. Red Ruffing is back too, and so are Hugh Mulcahy and Buddy Lewis. Charlie Keller will follow, and a couple of dozen former major-league players will be in uniform before the season is over.

1950: Making a leaping, off-the-wall catch of a Ralph Kiner drive in the 1st inning, Ted Williams fractures his left elbow in the All-Star Game at Chicago. Remaining in the game, he puts the American League ahead, 3 - 2, with an RBI single.
Kiner's 9th-inning home run ties the game, and Red Schoendienst's blast in the 14th wins it.
Williams later states he was never the same after this injury.
It's a game of firsts - the first extra-inning All-Star Game, the first time the NL wins at an AL park, and the first All-Star Game ever shown on national television.

1954: The Detroit Tigers released Ralph Branca.

1960: In the first of this year's two All-Star Games, Pittsburgh's Bob Friend notches his second win in the National League's last three with 3 innings of one-hit, shutout ball. Friend's performance plus home runs by Ernie Banks and Del Crandall ? not to mention perennial All-Star luminary, Willie Mays, falling just a few feet shy of the cycle ? pace the Senior Circuit to a 5 - 3 decision over its junior counterpart at Kansas City's Municipal Stadium. Albeit not affecting the game's outcome, a somewhat splashy All-Star debut is made by Friend's teammate, Roberto Clemente.

1961: Candlestick Park's notoriously vicious winds dominate the first of 1961's two All-Star Games. A capacity crowd witnesses a record seven errors, not to mention hometown hero Stu Miller's wind-induced balk, enabling the American League to forge a 3 - 3 tie before losing, 5 - 4, in 10 innings. The game-winning rally is comprised solely of contributions by the National League's four premier outfielders, in order of appearance: Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson and Clemente.

1962: For the first time since 1938, when the Waner brothers pulled the trick, brothers Hank Aaron and Tommie Aaron homer in the same inning. Both homers are hit in the last of the 9th, and Hank's grand slam provides the winning margin in an 8 - 6 Braves win over the Cards.

1972: Tigers win critical game on close call in ninth.

1973: Jim Northrup knocks in eight runs and scores three times as the Tigers rout the Rangers, 14 - 2. The 3 for 4 performance by the Tiger's leadoff hitter helps him record the 500th Run and 500th RBI of his career.

1973: The Detroit Tigers signed Mark Lemongello as an amateur free agent.

1975: Hank Aaron waves to the crowd at his 25th and final All Star Game.

1985: Nolan Ryan becomes the first pitcher to record 4,000 strikeouts, fanning Danny Heep in the 6th inning of Houston's 4 - 3 win over the Mets. Ryan finishes with 11 strikeouts in seven innings but gets no decision.

1989: Bo Jackson and Wade Boggs lead off the bottom of the 1st inning with back-to-back home runs off Rick Reuschel to spark the American League to a 5 - 3 win in the All-Star Game at Anaheim Stadium. Jackson earns MVP honors.

1990: Kansas City Royals outfielder Bo Jackson makes a great catch...and keeps running right up the outfield wall in Baltimore!

1995: Mickey Mantle's final public appearance increases awareness of organ donation programs.

1995: The National League defeats the American League in the All-Star Game, 3 - 2, on an 8th inning pinch-hit home run by Jeff Conine. Conine becomes the 10th player to homer in his first All-Star at bat, and is named the game's MVP. Frank Thomas, Craig Biggio and Mike Piazza also connect for home runs. Thomas becomes the first White Sox player ever to homer in the Mid-summer Classic as the NL out-homers the American League, 3 to 2.

2000: The American League wins its 4th consecutive All-Star Game, beating the National League, 6 - 3. Derek Jeter of the Yankees and Chipper Jones of the Braves each go 3 for 3 in the contest. Jeter takes MVP honors.

2003: The Detroit Tigers released Wendell Magee.

2005: Bobby Abreu beats Ivan Rodriguez in the final round to win the Home Run Derby at Comerica Park. His grand total of 41 home runs is a new Derby record.

2006: Kenny Rogers and Pudge Rodriguez become Tigers' 1st All-Star Game starting battery since 1966 (McLain and Freehan).

2013: Derek Jeter plays for the Yankees for the first time since breaking his ankle in Game 1 of the 2012 ALCS. Inserted as the DH, he singles on the first pitch he sees and comes in to score as the Yanks beat the Royals, 8 - 4.
Jeter comes back after only four rehabilitation outings in the minors, however, Jeter leaves the game after the 5th inning with a tight quad muscle and will undergo an MRI.

2013: Miguel Cabrera homers to right field off Chris Sale making him the first player with at least 30 home runs and 90 RBIs before the All-Star break.

2014: Aroldis Chapman of the Reds sets a new record by notching a strikeout in his 40th straight relief appearance, dating back to August 21, 2013. The previous record had been held by Bruce Sutter since 1977. Chapman strikes out the side against the Pirates on the way to his 20th save of the year.

2015: The Detroit Tigers signed Neftali Feliz as a free agent.

2017: The American League wins the 2017 All-Star Game, played at Marlins Park in Miami, FL, 2 - 1, in 10 innings over the National League. Miguel Sano gives the AL the lead with a bloop single to right scoring Jonathan Schoop with two outs in the 5th, but Yadier Molina ties it with a solo homer to the opposite field off Ervin Santana in the 6th.
Robinson Cano leads off the 10th by parking Wade Davis' first pitch beyond the right-field fence, then Andrew Miller records the last three outs for the save. Cano is named winner of the Ted Williams Award as the game's MVP.
The two leagues are now tied with 43 wins apiece since the first mid-summer classic was played in 1933, with two ties.

2022: The Detroit Tigers purchased Cody Sedlock from the Baltimore Orioles.

2023: Having lost the last nine editions of the All-Star Game since 2012, the National League is victorious in the 2023 All-Star Game played at Seattle's T-Mobile Park, 3 - 2, over the American League.
