Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

July 12 in Tigers and mlb history:

1901: At Boston's Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds, Cy Young of the Americans seven-hits the A's, 5 - 3, to win his 300th game. The 34-year-old will win an additional 211 games to establish an amazing major league record of 511 career victories.

1905: The Detroit Tigers beat New York 6 - 3, with the help of two errors by Highlander 1B Jack Doyle. The vet Doyle was signed yesterday and this will be his only appearance for New York.

1911: In the first inning of a 9 - 0 win over the Athletics at Detroit, Ty Cobb walks, then on consecutive pitches steals second base, third base, and home off lefty Harry Krause. Twice he beats perfect throws by C Ira Thomas.
After Cobb reaches on a fielder's choice in the 3rd, Sam Crawford homers. In the 7th Cobb walks, is bunted to second, and scores on a sacrifice fly, knocking the ball out of the hands of the new catcher Paddy Livingston.

1913: Philadelphia's Boardwalk Brown walks 15 Tigers in 7 2/3 innings, but staggers to a 16 - 9 win. Brown has only one walkless inning - the first.
Ty Cobb previously out for a week with an injured knee, plays 2B for the only time in his career, and makes three errors in his five fielding chances.

1921: Babe Ruth hits his 137th career home run, passing 19th century star Roger Connor's record of 136.

1922: Ty Cobb has 5 hits for the third of an AL-record four times on the season in the Tigers 7 - 3 win over the Philadelphia Athletics.

1928: Baseball's biggest battery is recorded, appropriately, with the New York Giants, as Garland "Gob" Buckeye, a 260-pound pro football lineman in the off-season, makes his National League pitching debut with 250-pound Shanty Hogan behind the plate. The Giants lose to the Cardinals.

1931: The largest crowd in the history of Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, 45,715 (in a ballpark with 35,000 seats), creates a travesty and permanently distorts the record for doubles hit in a game. Easy fly balls drop for ground rule doubles among the fans encroaching on the field. There are 32 doubles hit in two games, including 23 in the second game, setting records both for the most doubles in one game and in a doubleheader.

1934: Schoolboy Rowe fans 11 Yankees in a 4 - 2 win that puts the Tigers back in first place.

1943: An Armed Forces All-Star team managed by Babe Ruth and featuring Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams play a fund-raising game against the Braves in Boston. Ruth pinch-hits in the 8th and flies out to right. The All-Stars win on a Splendid Splinter home run, 9 - 8.

1949: The major league owners agree to install warning tracks made of cinder in front of outfield fences prior to the start of next season.

1949: The National League commits five errors, allowing the American League to record an 11 - 7 triumph in the All-Star Game at Ebbets Field. The contest marks the first appearance of black players in an All-Star Game: Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe in the NL lineup, and Larry Doby among the AL stars.

1951: At Cleveland, Allie Reynolds of the New York Yankees blanks Cleveland, 1 - 0, for the first of his two no-hitters this season. Gene Woodling's 7th-inning homer off loser Bob Feller is the difference in the 1 - 0 game. The Chief's no-hitter is the first by a Yankee since Monte Pearson in 1928. New York takes the nitecap behind Vic Raschi as Joe DiMaggio cinches it with a three-run homer off Chuck Stobbs.

1953: Braves slugger Eddie Mathews hits the first grand slam in the history of the Milwaukee franchise, as the Braves sweep two from the Cardinals, 10 - 1 and 4 - 3, in St. Louis.

1955: At Milwaukee's County Stadium, Stan Musial comes to bat in the bottom of 12th inning of a 5 - 5 All-Star deadlock. American League catcher Yogi Berra complains about his feet hurting and Musial tells him "Don't worry, I'll have you home in a minute"... then "the Man" hits a game-winning home run on the next pitch. The American League had taken a 5-run lead on a 3-run homer by Mickey Mantle off Robin Roberts, only to see the NL tie it. Braves P Gene Conley strikes out the side in the 12th.

1959: NBC uses outfield television cameras with 80-inch lenses to show the catchers' signals during a Yankee-Red Sox game. Commissioner Ford Frick requests that they halt its use. It doesn't help New York, which dropped its last four games to the Red Sox. Boston wins today, 7 - 3.

1966: St. Louis hosts a hot midsummer All-Star classic. Maury Wills' 10th-inning single scores Tim McCarver, as the National League wins, 2 - 1, in 105-degree heat. Brooks Robinson's stellar game (3 hits, eight chances) earns him the game MVP award. Asked about the new ballpark, Casey Stengel remarks, "it holds the heat well." On-field temperature is 113 degrees.

1968: The Tigers beat the twins 5 - 1. Denny McLain pitches a 3-hitter for his 17th win.

1969: Mickey Lolich strikes out 10 and Don Wert hits two home runs in the Tigers' 15-3 win over the indians.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D_RuIZoUIAAVgen.jpg

1969: Mike Cuellar of the Orioles throws a complete game 3-hitter against the Red Sox in a 4-0 shutout. All three of the Red Sox hits come off the bat of RF Tony Conigliaro, who has two singles and a double. Cuellar not only becomes the only pitcher in MLB history to have two 3-hitters in which one player has the opposing team's only three hits in the game, he does this in consecutive starts (following his win over the Yankees on July 8, 1969).

1970: Tigers tie a major league record with three sacrifice bunts in one inning. Two of the bunters reach base on errors amid a 4-run rally in the Tigers' 7-3 win over the orioles.

1976: A tentative agreement between the players and owners on labor contracts is reached. The formal agreement will be announced August 9th.

1979: Tigers-White Sox game is "postponed" after a Disco Demolition promotion goes awry at Comiskey Park.
Says new Tigers manager Sparky Anderson: "Postponed my ass. This has to be a forfeit."
After a delay of an hour and 16 minutes, the White Sox are forced to forfeit the second game of twi-night doubleheader against the Tigers when over 5,000 fans refuse to leave the field during Disco Demolition Night. Mike Veeck's promotion involves admitting fans for 98 cents with a disco record, collecting the vinyl and then literally blowing up the LPs and .45s in center field. The league will rule the game a forfeit the following day.

1989: Ron Guidry retires from baseball. During his 14-year career with the New York Yankees, "Louisiana Lightning" compiled a 170-91 record with a 3.29 ERA.

1990: The Detroit Tigers released Matt Kinzer.

1991: Steve Searcy of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2005: During the All-Star Game Town Hall discussion, Bud Selig, believing the designated hitter is a big part of the game, states the rule will remain in use for the foreseeable future. The commissioner however makes it clear the National League will not adopt the 1973 addition to the American League rule book.

2005: The American League defeats the National League, 7-5 in the All-Star Game played at Comerica Park in Detroit. Andruw Jones, Mark Teixeira, and Miguel Tejada hit home runs and Yankee closer Mariano Rivera records the save.

2011: The National League is the winner of the 2011 All-Star Game, played in Phoenix, AZ, 5 - 1 over the American League. Prince Fielder hits a three-run homer to put the NL ahead in the 4th and wins the game's MVP award; Adrian Gonzalez accounts for the junior circuit's only run with a solo homer. Tyler Clippard picks up the win and C.J. Wilson the loss.

2016: The American League defeats the National League, 4 - 2, in the 2016 All-Star Game played at Petco Park in San Diego, CA. Royals teammates Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez both homer in a three-run 2nd inning and Hosmer later adds another RBI to be named the game's MVP.

2017: Metallica plays Comerica Park, leaving the outfield turf ... different.

2018: The Red Sox win their 10th game in a row as they defeat the Blue Jays, 6 - 4, thanks to 5 RBIs by Mookie Betts. He hits a grand slam off J.A. Happ to cap a five-run 4th inning, at the end of an epic 13-pitch at-bat, then adds an RBI single in the 7th as the crowd chants "MVP! MVP!" The Sox have now won 66 games, the most before the All-Star break in team history.

2019: The Detroit Tigers released Brandyn Sittinger.

2019: In their first home game since the tragic death of Tyler Skaggs on July 1st, the Angels pay tribute to their fallen teammate in the best possible way, with a 13 - 0 combined no-hitter over the Mariners. In a scheduled bullpen game, opener Taylor Cole starts things off with two hitless innings, then Felix Pena is magnificent in relief, with 7 frames during which he issues just 1 walk and strikeos out 6, retiring the final 14 batters in order. The entire Angels team wears number 45 in tribute to Skaggs and his mother throws the ceremonial first pitch in an emotional pre-game ceremony. Mike Trout goes 3 for 4 with a homer and 6 RBIs to lead the offense, as the Angels score 7 runs in the 1st to remove any doubt about the final outcome.

2021: At a press conference during the All-Star Game festivities, Commissioner Rob Manfred announces that MLB is committing to give up to $150 million to the Players Alliance over a ten-year period towards a variety of programs to support the participation of disadvantaged youth in baseball, not just as players but also in employee development, and in promoting Black baseball history and culture. Former All-Star Curtis Granderson, who heads the Players Alliance, and other current and former All-Stars are present for the announcement that makes good on a promise made the previous year for MLB to become a more visible agent of change in favor of justice and equality.

2023: The Detroit Tigers released Jonathan Schoop.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Yesterday’s blog brought up the concerns the Tigers are facing about how to handle Spencer Torkelson’s future with the team. I also wrote that Scott Harris still has a laundry list of players he needs to address and solve.
Given this, let’s continue the discussion and identify Harris’ top 5 roster concerns that must be decided before the 2025 season.

Here’s a look at another five MLB Draft prospects who could interest the Tigers.
The 2024 MLB Draft is almost here, and Detroit’s first round pick is just low enough to introduce some mystery as to what direction they’ll go with it.

Tigers right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long had internal brace surgery back in April and was already slated to spend the rest of 2024 rehabbing from that. On top of that, he’s also now undergone left hip labral repair surgery. Jason Beck of MLB.com was among those to relay the news on X and also passed along some thoughts from manager A.J. Hinch. It seems the club is hoping that it makes sense to address both at the same time and that the second procedure won’t add to his return timeline. “The timing works out to address this while he’s recovering from Tommy John,” Hinch said. “That’s the reason why now. It’s something that we’ve kept an eye on and he’s talked about.” He made his major league debut last year with a 2.70 ERA in four starts and will hopefully be back in the mix at some point next year.

1896: Ed Delahanty hits four home runs, but it's not enough as the Phillies lose to the Chicago Colts, 9 - 8. "Big Ed" is the second man to hit four homers in one game in the National League, after Bobby Lowe two years earlier.

1901: Doc Nance becomes the first player in Tigers history to get six hits in one game.

1904: With Napoleon Lajoie lining a major-league record three triples, Cleveland rolls past the Highlanders, 16 - 3.

1909: The Detroit Tigers traded Frank Allen, George Suggs and $2,800 to Mobile (Southern Association) for Bill Lelivelt.

1911: In the 9th against the A's, Ty Cobb breaks a 7 - 7 tie by scoring from first on Jim Delahanty's single. Cobb runs through coach Hughie Jennings' frantic signal to hold up and, using a fadeaway slide, eludes the tag of catcher Ira Thomas. Detroit wins 8 - 7, to stay in first place.

1915: Pete Alexander wins his 9th in a row for the Phils, shutting out the visiting Cardinals, 8 - 0. The Phils move into first place in the National League with the victory, and will remain there for the rest of the season, winning the franchise' first-ever NL Pennant.

1916: Detroit's Bill James strikes out seven straight batters in the Tigers' 3 - 1 win over Washington.

1922: The Detroit Tigers purchased Roy Moore from the Philadelphia Athletics.

1922: The smallest crowd in Fenway Park history - just 68 fans - see the Browns' Herman Pillette shut out the Red Sox, 2 - 0. Alex Ferguson takes the loss.

1927: Sam Gibson of the Tigers walks 12 but still beats the Senators 7 - 3 in the first game of a double header.

1927: Chicago admirers present Eddie Collins, now with the A's, with a new automobile. The A's send out a lineup featuring Collins, Ty Cobb and Zack Wheat, all of whom have at least 2,500 hits entering the game. The next team to that will be the 2012 Yankees.

1930: The defending champs, the Philadelphia A's, move into first place by beating the Browns, 12 - 1, and will remain in the lead the rest of the season.

1934: In front of 20,000 fans during the third inning at Navin Field in Detroit, Babe Ruth wallops a Tommy Bridges 3-2 pitch far over the right field wall for his 700th career home run. The 4 - 2 victory over the Tigers puts the Bronx Bombers back into first place, but Lou Gehrig is helped off the field in the first inning with a severe bout of lumbago.

1935: The A's Doc Cramer has a 6-for-6 game, tying the American League mark for the second time. He had also done it in 1932.

1940: Bobo Newsom wins his 13th consecutive decision, the longest win streak for him. His line in that time: 17 G, 17 GS, 13 CG, 135.2 IP, 102 H, 42 R, 34 ER, 42 BB, 84 K, and 2.26 ERA.

1943: The American League edges the National League, 5 - 3, at Shibe Park in the first All-Star Game played under the lights. Bobby Doerr of the Red Sox is the hitting hero with a three-run homer off Mort Cooper in the 2nd inning. Vince DiMaggio of the Pirates has a single, triple and home run in three trips. Doerr also handles six fielding chances. At the All-Star break he had handled 307 errorless chances, dating back to May 20th. His streak will end at 349 chances, a record he will break in 1948. The game is broadcast to GIs via shortwave radio.

1944: A .300 hitter as a rookie for the Tigers in 1943, Dick Wakefield finishes Navy air training and then is released from the service pending assignment. He rejoins the Tigers and will hit .355 the rest of the season, pushing Detroit near the flag despite the loss of 12 of its first 13 home games. In the first week after the All-Star Game, Wakefield homers twice, and goes 9 for 24.

1947: Making his 14th major-league uniform switch, Bobo Newsom joins the Yanks. His 7-5 record the rest of the way will help the Yankees to the title. Next season, Newsom will join the Giants.

1948: At Sportsman's Park, the American League defeats the National League for the 11th time in 15 All-Star contests, 5 - 2. Vic Raschi pitches three scoreless innings to pick up the win and hits a two-run single as well.
Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, George Kell and Hal Newhouser miss places in the lineup due to injuries.

1950: Doctors remove seven bone fragments from Ted Williams' elbow in a 75-minute operation. He was injured in yesterday's All-Star Game and will be sidelined until mid-September. But he will go on to hit .350 for the rest of 1950 and .336 throughout the rest of his career, including .388 and .328 to lead the American League in 1957 and 1958 respectively.

1954: At Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, Senators hurler Dean Stone does not retire a batter, but gets the win in the American League's 11 - 9 All-Star Game victory as he throws out Red Schoendienst trying to steal home in the 8th inning for the third out before retiring a batter. The AL breaks the National League's 4-game winning streak.
Larry Doby's pinch home run in the bottom of the 8th, followed by Nellie Fox's 2-run single, ends the highest-scoring All-Star Game in history. The two teams combine for 31 hits, with the AL amassing 17. The Indians' Al Rosen has two homers and 5 RBIs.

1960: Vern Law becomes the second Pirate to win a 1960 All-Star Game, working two scoreless innings. Stan Musial comes off the National League bench and hits his record 6th and last All-Star Game home run. Willie Mays, Ken Boyer and Eddie Mathews also homer in the 6 - 0 NL win, the third shutout in All-Star Game history.

1961: Chicago's Early Wynn gets an early departure as he retires just two Yankees in the 1st inning. Then Mickey Mantle (30th) and Roger Maris (34th) belt back-to-back homers to send the vet to the showers. For Mantle, it is the 13th homer in his career off Wynn, his favorite target. New York wins, 6 - 2

1963: At Kansas City in the second game of a doubleheader, Cleveland's 43-year-old Early Wynn leaves with a lead after struggling through five innings. Four scoreless relief innings by Jerry Walker enable Wynn to score his 300th career victory, 7 - 4. It has taken Wynn eight tries to cop his 300th (and last) career win.

1964: For the second straight game, the Tigers win 4-3 in 10 innings against the Orioles.

1965: For the first time in All-Star history, the National League takes the lead in games won over the American League as the Senior Circuit edges the junior loop, 6 - 5 at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota. Willie Mays homers, walks twice and scores twice. Game MVP Juan Marichal throws three scoreless innings.

1971: In a game which features six home runs, including Reggie Jackson's crushing a Dock Ellis 4th-inning pitch off the power generator located on the Tiger Stadium right-field roof 520 feet from home plate, the American League beats the National League, 6 - 4, in All-Star action. All the players who homer - Johnny Bench, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Frank Robinson, Harmon Killebrew as well as Reggie - will become members of the Hall of Fame. It is the only AL All-Star victory between 1962 and 1983.

1973: Mickey Stanley ties an an American League record with 11 outfield putouts in the Tigers' 8-2 win over the Angels at Tiger Stadium.

1976: Three Tigers start in the annual All-Star Game, played in Philadelphia. Mark Fidrych becomes the second rookie pitcher ever to start the All-Star Game. With Mark Fidrych on the mound, Ron LeFlore leads off and plays center field, and Rusty Staub plays right field. The National League wins the contest 7-1.

1979: One day after Disco Demolition, 20-year-old rookie Dan Petry pitches a 4-hit complete game 3 - 1 win at Comiskey Park vs. the white sox for his first career win.

1982: In the first All-Star game played outside the United States, the National League cruises to its 11th straight win, beating the American League at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, 4 - 1. Dave Concepcion's 2nd-inning two-run homer off Red Sox starter Dennis Eckersley is the turning point of the game. The NL has now won 19 of the last 20 contests.

1984: At Minnesota, Detroit tops the Twins 5 - 3, when Lou Whitaker bloops a 2 run inside-the-park homer to win it.
Detroit sends it to extra innings when RF Kirk Gibson throws out Tim Teufel at home with two out in the 9th.
Willie Hernandez (5-0) is the winner. Tigers are 58-28.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D_Sq4RVXUAATHqj.jpg

1984: The Yankees retire the uniform numbers of Roger Maris (# 9) and Elston Howard (# 32). The team also erects plaques in their honor to pay tribute to their achievements as Bronx Bombers.

1989: The Detroit Tigers released David Palmer.

1993: Players Association chief Donald Fehr says that if serious negotiations between the players and the owners don't begin soon, the players could go out on strike in September, threatening the postseason.

1999: At Fenway Park, hometown favorite Pedro Martinez strikes out five of the six batters he faces to win MVP honors. The two All-Star pitching squads combine for a record 22 strikeouts as the American League tops the National League in the 70th Mid-Summer Classic, 4 - 1. The game begins 15 minutes late as Hall of Fame OF Ted Williams rides out in a cart for the first-pitch ceremony. Players from both teams surround the former Red Sox star in a spontaneous display of homage.

2002: The Tigers defeat the White Sox twice, 5 - 3 and 3 - 1, to mark their first sweep of a doubleheader in almost nine years.

2003: The Detroit Tigers traded Adam Bernero to the Colorado Rockies for Ben Petrick.

2004: Having earned the All-Star MVP award as a 23-year-old for pitching three perfect innings at the Astrodome in 1986, the 41-year old Roger Clemens gives up six runs in the 1st inning in the 75th Midsummer Classic played at Houston's Minute Maid Park. The eventual 9 - 4 American League victory is halted in the top of the 5th inning as the much chagrined "Rocket" receives the Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award from Bud Selig in recognition of his outstanding 21-year career.

2007: The Detroit Tigers traded Roman Colon to the Kansas City Royals for Danny Christensen (minors).

2008: C.C. Sabathia homers and goes the distance in a 3 - 2 Brewers win over the Reds. Sabathia had homered for the Indians earlier in the season, making him the first pitcher to go deep for a team in each league since Earl Wilson in 1970.

2010: George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees since 1973, passes away from a heart attack at his home in Tampa, FL. Steinbrenner restored the Yankees to greatness during his ownership, spent lavishly on free agents, fired managers and front office personnel at a sometimes dizzying pace, but saw the team win seven World Series titles. He had relinquished the team's operations to his son Hal Steinbrenner as his health deteriorated badly in 2008.

2010: The National League wins the 2010 All-Star Game, played at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, 3 - 1, for its first win since 1996. MVP Brian McCann drives in all three runs with a bases-loaded double off Matt Thornton in the 7th. In a year in which pitchers have grabbed most of the headlines, the game is true to form, as pitchers dominate. The American League's only score comes on a sacrifice fly by Robinson Cano.

2011: With jury selection complete, both sides make their opening arguments in the trial of Roger Clemens for perjury. It is clear that the central issue will be the credibility of Clemens' former trainer, Brian McNamee, who has supplied much of the prosecution's key evidence and will be its star witness. For its part, the defense argues that "Clemens' only crime was having the poor judgment of staying connected with McNamee", claiming that none of the allegations are founded and that the physical evidence is the result of tampering.

2012: Chipper Jones ties Mike Schmidt for second place on the all-time list for RBI by a third baseman, knocking in his 1,595th run with a homer in Atlanta's 7 - 5 win over the Mets. Jones is now one RBI behind George Brett among players who played the majority of their careers at the hot corner.

2013: Max Scherzer loses his first game of the year after 13 straight wins when the Tigers bow to the Rangers, 7 - 1.

2020: The Detroit Tigers released Zack Godley.

2023: Jake Marisnick of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

Intrigue within the Detroit Tigers is growing. Are they prepping for the trade deadline? Players are being sent down/called up and current players are having their positions moved.
Baddoo has been sent down yet again. The Tiger can only recall him 1 more time this year. In his place, Ryan Vilade has been called up. His offensive stats aren't impressive. Is it the glove they want? He plays outfield and 3B. Matt Vierling is transitioning to 1B. With Carpenter on the IL and Canha slumping, it leaves room for an outfielder like Vilade. But could the team be trying him at 3B given Urshela's expiring contract? Or could Urshela be playing more 1B meaning that Vilade would play some 3B?

Scotty Boy has woken up from his nap this week…first Maeda to the bullpen, now Baddoo heading out…don’t stop there Mr. POBO Harris keep it rolling!
