Tigers Place Drew Smyly on DL; Ryan Raburn Recalled.
from blessyouboystigersblog

Smyly move is retroactive to June 11.

Raburn hit .194 in eight games for Triple-A Toledo after the Tigers demoted him late last month. He missed a handful of games with the Mud Hens due to a hamstring injury.
For those debating Raburn's option status; the option year is for all year, but nullified when he gets 5 years service time (~10 days away). Paul Wezner at TigsTown

Smyly's trip to the DL is the 10th this season for a #Tigers player, fourth already in June. Team's made 28 roster moves in 62 games.

Detroit Tigers' Jim Leyland says Ryan Raburn will not play every day: 'He's got to do something'.
from Mlive

"I'm going to be quite frank," Leyland said. "It's not like Raburn went down there and tore it up, because he didn't. He did hit a homer and got a hit in his last game. That's just really the way our team plays out better right now."

Leyland made it clear that Raburn will not be a regular. He believes he can be more effective off the bench.

"He's going to have to do something, don't get me wrong," Leyland said. "But I can tell you, I'm not going to play him every day. He's not going to be the everyday second baseman. I'm going to play him like I think he plays best, which is probably part-time."

Detroit Tigers will not be able to send Ryan Raburn to minors without his permission once he spends six more days in majors.
from Mlive

player is credited with a year of service time for every 172 days in the majors. Prior to being recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Raburn had four years and 165 day of service time.
Thursday added one more day to that total, which leaves Raburn needing just six more.

Coke, Villarreal get breather in finale.
Manager Jim Leyland was counting on starter Justin Verlander to pitch as deep as possible into Thursday's game, as relievers Phil Coke and Brayan Villarreal get the day off.

"I need the big boy to be just what he is today," Leyland said of Verlander. "That would be very good for us."

Leyland said he might leave Verlander in to hit in situations when he might otherwise pinch-hit for the starter, who doesn't have a hit in 21 Major League at-bats.
He said relievers Duane Below, Luis Marte and Luke Putkonen are all available.

"If we can't through the game with Verlander, plus that, then it wasn't a very good game," Leyland said.

Tigers finish 4-2 road trip with 5-3 win over Cubs. Austin Jackson had big day with late RBI hits, and Verlander superb thru 8IP.

Tigers took early 2-0 on Fielder RBI dbl in first, Raburn RBI dbl in 2nd. Cubs then tied gm with 2 in 2nd...and gm stayed that way 'til 7th.

Raburn started 7th w/ IF hit, w/ one out, Verlander sacrificied him to 2nd...then Jackson brought him home with single to make it 3-2.

With Tigers still leading 3-2, Jackson hit 2-run HR to LF in top of 9th, giving him 8RBI in last four games.

Verlander retired 18 of the final 20 batters he faced. Ended 4G winless stretch by going 8IP, 2ER on 5H, 0BB/8K, now 6-4, 2.66ERA.

Raburn went 2-3 with RBI dbl, and scored go-ahead run in return from Toledo...contributions up and down the order stood out on this trip...

More balanced attack resulted in a lot of late-inning scoring: Tigers outscored opp. on this trip 23-8 from 6th inning on...

Tigers have won consecutive series for first time since first two series of the year, now 30-33, 4.5 back of W. Sox, who play tonite.

fans were simply amazing in his series -they took over this ballpark, esp. today. 124,000+ for 3G series was all-time Wrigley record.

Tigers now go home to face struggling Rockies, whose 5.41ERA is last in NL. Crosby vs. Francis tom. night, we're on the air at 6:40pm
