Angels 3 - Tigers 2: Tigers' offense a no-show as Angels walk-off.
from blessyouboystigersblog

When Scherzer struck out Mark Trumbo in the 7th, it became the 10th straight start where he struck out 8 or more. Scherzer is also the first Tigers pitcher since at least 1918 to have accomplished the feat.

Santana had some sort of strange wizardry over Cabrera, striking him out 3 times. Cabrera hadn't suffered through a 3 K game in 2 years. His last game full of so much futility was back in September of 2010. Then you would have to go back to 2008 to find another 3 K performance.

September 8 in Tigers and mlb history:

1917: Detroit beats the Browns 1 - 0 in 12 innings. Ty Cobb triples off the RF fence in the 12th and scores on a sacrifice fly.

1922: Detroit beats the Browns 8 - 3, on Bobby Veach's two homers off Urban Shocker. First baseman Lu Blue pulls off two unassisted double plays, tying the American League record, and both are off line drives by Johnny Tobin.

1946: In the minor leagues Bill Kennedy of Rocky Mount (Coastal Plain League) will be credited with 456 strikeouts, breaking the former mark of 418 set by the Tigers Virgil Trucks in the Alabama-Florida League in 1938.

1961 - The Yanks rout the Indians 9 - 1, as Mickey Mantle hits home run #52, off Gary Bell. The Yanks win for their 9th straight while Detroit loses their 8th in a row to drop 10 games back. The Tigers purchase veteran Vic Wertz from the Red Sox to shore up their offense.

1967: The Tigers move into a first-place tie with the Twins, as Eddie Mathews and Jim Northrup hit home runs, and Mickey Lolich beats Tommy John 4 - 1, at Chicago.

1972: Mickey Lolich wins his 20th game of the year as Detroit tips the Orioles 4 - 3. The Tigers jump on Jim Palmer (18-8) for three runs in the 1st inning.

1995: The Tigers trade IF Juan Samuel to the Royals in exchange for a player to be named.

2008: Gary Sheffield hits a grand slam for the official 250,000th homer in major league history. The blow is Sheffield's 2nd homer of the day and his 13th career grand slam. Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera and Mike Hessman also homer as the Tigers outslug the A's 14 - 8.

Tigers have lost last seven one-run games, almost all low-scoring games...2-10 in their last 12 games decided by one run.

Tigers road troubles really stand out.: 45-36 on road last year., 30-36 this year, and have lost 13 of last 19...still have 15G left on road.

Pitching staff has put Tigers in position to make playoffs; it's up to offense to get them in.
from the Oakland Press

No Tigers starter had given up more than three earned runs in any of the last nine games before Saturday night?s affair, and even that had happened just once.
Even so, the team was just 4-5 in that span, as the offense averaged just 3.33 runs per game.
The last seven losses have all come by one run. The last nine have come by a total of 10 runs.
The Tigers came into Saturday 40-6 when allowing two or fewer runs. You mush that parameter to three, and the record drops to 55-17.
After Friday?s 3-2 loss, the Tigers were 17-23 in one-run games this year.
How does that compare? Last year, they were 29-17 in one-run games.

Leyland: Dotel 'great' despite suffering defeat.
Despite Octavio Dotel giving up the winning run in the ninth inning against the Angels Friday night, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was impressed by the reliever's stuff.

The veteran had not allowed a run in his previous seven innings pitched and he had given up only five runs in 28 innings dating back to June 27. Dotel has not given up a run in 40 of his 50 outings this season, but against the Angels, a single by Kendrys Morales up the middle, a soft infield hit to third by Erick Aybar and a single by Alberto Callaspo through the left side earned Dotel his first loss since May.

"Octavio threw the ball great," Leyland said. "He got the little nubber and the guy came up with a hit that we didn't."

The righty was roughed up a couple times in May and June, but he was then lights out for the most part until Friday night.

Catcher Alex Avila said the hit by Callaspo with two outs ran back over the plate to allow the pinch-hitter to get good wood on the ball.
"I'm sure he'll probably want that one back, but it was still a pretty good pitch," Avila said.

Triple delight: Scherzer hits 100 mph for first time.
The fastball felt the same as the last one and all the others earlier in the night, but Max Scherzer's strikeout pitch to Chris Iannetta in the eighth inning Friday night was a first. On a pitch to Iannetta, his 98th of the game, Scherzer was clocked at 101 mph by the radar gun at Angel Stadium to mark the first time he believes he has ever hit triple digits.

"I didn't see it," the Tigers right-hander said. "Some guys came up during the game and told me I hit 101. I haven't been up there before. Even if the gun is plus one, it's still 100, so I'll take it."

Scherzer said he threw the pitch as hard as he could, which, he added, he does a lot of times and that it didn't feel any different from usual. Manager Jim Leyland couldn't remember whether he'd seen the pitcher throw that fast, but acknowledged that guns are different at every park.

Regardless, the skipper was more than impressed with the start and said he was really "letting it fly." Scherzer was taken out at the end of the inning after punching out nine Angels and throwing 110 pitches.

"He's not going back out in the ninth after he threw 101 mph in the eighth after throwing 105 or 110 pitches," Leyland said.

Scherzer paces himself throughout a game to make sure his velocity doesn't dip when his pitch count rises. That was clearly the case on Friday.

"I believe your last 15 pitches in a start, most of the time, define the start," he said. "Regardless of what happens, I really want to have my best bullets late. I focus on making sure I can throw my hardest pitch the last pitch of the game."

Angels 6 - Tigers 1 : Justin Verlander rocked, lifeless Tigers lose again on road.

There's still time to win it, of course ? but this is not the way to win it.
Losing four of the last five isn't the way to get it done.
Losing 13 of the last 18 on the road isn't the way to get it done.
Searching and searching, but finding few lineup answers, isn't the way to get it done.
