Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

September 9 in Tigers and mlb history:

1921 - An American League record for total runs and hits is made when Chicago beats Detroit, 20 - 15. Each team has 20 hits. Ralph Young, Ty Cobb each have 3 hits and 4 runs scored. Harry Heilmann and Bobby Veach knock in 4 apiece.

1931 - To raise funds to help the unemployed in the Depression, the Yankees, Giants, and Robins agree to a series of benefit games. Sixty thousand fans, paying regular prices, raise $59,000 in the first match-up, as Babe Ruth homers and the Yankees beat the Giants 7 - 2.

1932 - The Tigers beat the Yankees 14 - 13 in a 14-inning game in which Lou Gehrig hits a grand slam and drives in eight runs. He has reached this RBI feat twice before. Frankie Crosetti strikes out four times in the game, including twice in one inning. Detroit also tops the Yanks 4 - 1 in five innings to finally complete the protested game of August 1st, and the tie of yesterday. The Yanks score their lone run in the 3rd inning off Buck Marrow with their only two hits of the game.

1950: The Tigers and White Sox finally finish a game that started in April. The game was originally scheduled as the nitecap of a doubleheader on April 30th, but was halted by darkness after 9 innings deadlocked at 7 - 7. Rescheduled for August 10th, the contest was halted in the 7th with the score 1 - 1. Art Houtteman finally settles it with a 1 - 0, 12-inning win. Hoot Evers triples and scores on a single by Johnny Groth. The league leaders fail to cash in by losing the nitecap 5 - 4, cutting their lead to a half game over New York and a game ahead of Boston.

1970: Bowie Kuhn hands Denny McLain his third suspension of the year, this one for carrying a gun, plus other unspecified charges, and ends McLain's season with a 3-5 record.

1977 - In the second game of a doubleheader loss in Boston, Tiger rookies Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell debut together. They will hold down the 2B and SS jobs in Detroit for a record 19 years and a record for teammates of1,918 games played together.

1990: Tiger RF Scott Lusader loses the battle to bright sun and soggy turf and makes three errors (two fielding and one throwing) in the 1st inning against the White Sox. It's a first in the American League since 1925. The Sox score seven runs in the inning and coast home 13 - 3, snapping the Tigers' 7-game winning streak.

Leyland has been impressed with Avisail Garcia.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he hasn't talked much with recently called up Avisail Garcia, but he likes what he sees so far. The skipper said the two have talked a little bit on and off, but he's noticed the rookie has been very relaxed since joining the team.
"He's going to be a good player," Leyland said.
He noted Garcia's speed and talent, likening his personality to another player in the Tigers' clubhouse.
"His face is a lot like [Miguel] Cabrera," Leyland said. "He kind of lights up the room a little bit."
Garcia went 0-for-3 and started in right field Saturday, and he's 4-for-11 in six games since being recalled from Double-A Erie on Aug. 31.

Tigers to play White Sox with sense of urgency.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland isn't treating the upcoming series against the White Sox as the end-all, be-all with 19 games still on the schedule after those four games are over.
But he does understand the importance of it with the Tigers sitting two games back in the American League Central entering Sunday and no more dates with Chicago following the series.
"You've got to play these games like they are the last game you are going to play, which is the way it is," he said. "If you've got to pump guys up for these games, then I've got a problem. You are getting to a sense of urgency, which is certainly different than a sense of panic."
Leyland said he doesn't need to give any sort of "ra-ra" speech to his players at this point, and the team just needs to get it done on the field.
The key will be scoring more than just one or two runs per game, which he said won't get it done.
"It boils down to you've got to win baseball games," Leyland said. "That is as simple as it is. That's what it is for them, and that is what is for us and everybody else involved in a race. There are a lot of people in the same boat that we are fighting to get to the postseason."

The magnitude of the upcoming series might explain Leyland's decision to pull starter Justin Verlander after just six innings and the Tigers trailing Saturday.
The righty had gone 80 straight starts of making at least 100 pitches until Saturday's loss, when he threw 97 pitches.
"He wanted to pitch another inning, but he wasn't going to pitch another inning," Leyland said. "We'll put that in reserve for the White Sox."

Detroit Tigers suffer another one-run loss, swept by Los Angeles Angels.
from Mlive

Detroit's bats fell silent, mustering only five hits -- good for only two runs. In total, the Tigers' offense combined for five runs on 13 hits in three games. With 23 games remaining, that ain't gonna cut it.

Angels 3 - Tigers 2: Another day, another 1 run loss.
from blessyouboystigersblog

The Tigers are 73-66, 2 games behind the White Sox and 4 1/2 back in the wild card race. It's win the Central or bust.

Proof this just may not be the Tigers season: They are now 17-24 in 1 run games. That's not just due to bad baseball, that's also a good amount of bad luck.
More bad news: The Tigers have lost 14 of their last 18 road games. Worse, they still have 7 games left on this trip.

Sanchez posted his 13th quality start in his last 18 appearances, his 4th straight as a Tiger. I may have plenty of complaints about the Tigers as of late, but the job Sanchez has done since getting acclimated to the AL isn't one of them. In the post game, Jim Leyland said today was the best Sanchez had thrown as a Tiger.

In the 3 game series, Cabrera and Fielder never came to the plate with RISP.
