Tuesday?s lineups: Tigers at A?s.
Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup. Gerald Laird gets the start behind the plate. No update yet on Avila?s status.

Meanwhile, after the buzz surrounding Brennan Boesch?s ill-fated start over Andy Dirks on Monday, he?s out of the lineup tonight. Quintin Berry starts in left and bats second. Andy Dirks moves over to right and bats sixth, where Boesch normally would be batting.

The less than Perfect Jose Valverde.
from Baseball Analytics

Bill Chuck of the Baseball Analytics blog discusses the very different Jose Valverde we've seen this season, with heat maps: The less than perfect Jose Valverde - Baseball Analytics Blog - MLB Baseball Analytics.
One area where we can see the difference in Valverde is in his lack of dominance against left-handed batters, particularly on pitches down in the hitting zone.

Tigers' Avila sits out second straight game.
Alex Avila was missing from the Tigers' lineup for the second straight game and manager Jim Leyland didn't offer too much information on the backstop's situation, other than Avila isn't able to play.

"He's medically not ready to play," Leyland said.

When asked if there was a timetable for Avila's return, the skipper repeated his response.

"Medically not ready to play," he said.

Avila took an elbow to the side of the head from first baseman Prince Fielder during Sunday's game against the Indians. Avila said Monday that the blow knocked him out and he remembered nothing but assistant athletic trainer Steve Carter yelling his name.

He also said he felt fine Monday morning. However, after taking batting practice in Chicago for a makeup game against the White Sox, he began experiencing headaches.

Avila passed concussion tests Sunday night and Tuesday it didn't sound as though Leyland expected him to be out too long.

"I planned on playing Alex today, but I got here and found out he wasn't available," Leyland said.

Avila was not in the clubhouse prior to the start of Tuesday's game against the A's. However, head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said the catcher had not yet been examined Tuesday. With no updated medical report, it means Avila could've said he wasn't ready yet.

Rand said Avila will continue being evaluated daily. Until his return, catcher Gerald Laird will serve as the team's starter. Laird was in the lineup batting ninth against A's right-hander A.J. Griffin.

Leyland: Now 'not the proper time' to talk contract.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland is well aware of his contract expiring after this season. But he's also well aware, with the Tigers trailing the White Sox by three games in the division, now is not the time to talk about it.

"I don't think about that. I think about beating Oakland," he said Tuesday. "That's not going to have any effect on me. I think about beating the Oakland Athletics tonight and get into the playoffs. That situation will take care of itself at the proper time, and now, obviously, is not the proper time."
Leyland is currently on a one-year contract he signed last August.

In Cleveland, Leyland said he wouldn't speak to the media about it because he didn't want to be a distraction. He maintained that stance Tuesday, but revealed he's not being silent about it with just the media.

"If I had information for you, I would give it to you, but I have none. I haven't discussed my situation with anyone nor has my situation been discussed with me," Leyland said. "And I don't want to discuss my situation with anyone nor do they want to discuss it with me right now. We're trying to win a division."

Miggy a Clemente nominee for community work.
Major League Baseball announced the 30 nominees for the 2012 Roberto Clemente Award on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers' selection was third baseman and American League Most Valuable Player candidate Miguel Cabrera.
It's an award named after a 15-time All-Star and Hall of Famer who perished in a plane crash on New Year's Eve in 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The award is given to the player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community development.
Cabrera has undoubtedly put up the numbers on the field, and he's been equally as valuable in the community, establishing The Miguel Cabrera Foundation as well as partnering with the Detroit Tigers Foundation.
David Ortiz won the award in 2011. The only Tigers player to do so was Al Kaline in 1973. Recent Tigers nominees include Justin Verlander (2011), Carlos Guillen ('10), Curtis Granderson ('09) and Magglio Ordonez ('08).
The winner will be decided by a panel, which includes the fan vote. Beginning Tuesday, fans can cast a ballot for one of the 30 nominees at mlb.com/ClementeAward. The collective fan vote counts as one vote in the panel.
Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on Oct. 14 and the winner will be revealed during the World Series.
For being selected as the Tigers' nominee, Cabrera was recognized during a pregame ceremony at Comerica Park.

Kaline on Cabrera: He's the best hitter that's ever played in Detroit since I've been here, there's no question about that.

Kaline on Cabrera: That's including myself, and I don't even want to put myself in the same category with him. He's the best.

Kaline on Cabrera: He uses the whole field. He's got tremendous power to right field, which is very unusual for a right-handed hitter.

Kaline on Cabrera: For a big guy, and I mean this, he doesn't run really well and he still hits well over .300 every year.

Kaline on Cabrera: He's not going to beat out many base hits on the IF. He's just a tremendous hitter & he's a very smart hitter.

Kaline on Cabrera: I don't think he gets enough credit for being a smart hitter, knowing how the pitcher's going to attack him.

Cabrera now has 25 home runs at home this season - most by a player in Detroit since Cecil Fielder hit 27 at home in 1991.

Miguel Cabrera is the 2nd player in Tigers history with 3 separate seasons of 125+ RBI, joining Hank Greenberg, who had 6 such seasons.
