Justin Verlander continues battle for AL Triple Crown.
DETROIT -- The race for Justin Verlander to pull out a pitching Triple Crown took another turn late Friday night with Jered Weaver's eight innings of one-run ball against the Yankees. It lowered Weaver's ERA on the season to 2.44, putting him barely ahead of Verlander for the American League lead.
Weaver's ERA had jumped from 2.28 to 2.49 after his last start, which put Verlander in the lead. The Tigers' ace has led the Majors in wins and strikeouts for most of the summer.
No pitcher has won the pitching Triple Crown (leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts) since Jake Peavy did it in the National League in 2007, when he was pitching for the Padres. A year earlier, Johan Santana had done it with the Twins.
