Experts asked to take a first look at second season.
from bostonglobe

With October fast approaching, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe polled experts around the league on the relative strength of the potential playoff teams. As expected, the Phillies topped the list, but the experts' choice for the second-best team may surprise some. Check out Cafardo's piece for the full rankings, along with quotes on each club.

Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Fister has allowed 3 ER in 5 starts with 36/4 K/BB. Who does he think he is? Cliff Lee or something?

Tigers win their 9th straight, Fister tosses another gem, and Valverde sets new team record with 43rd save, Tigers now 84-62 after 2-1 win.

Fister's final line: 7IP, 3H, 0R, 2BB/5K...that's five straight starts of 7IP+, and 1ER or fewer...36.2IP, 22H, 4ER, 4BB/36K in the 5G.

Tigers 9G win streak is their longest since 1984...Tigers have won 19 of 23, best stretch since 2006.

Think we can put concerns about any late season fade to rest: Tigers were 18-10 in August, now 9-1 in September...magic # now 8 w/ 16G left.

Tigers have score at least 4R in 24 of last 30G....in the six games where they didn't, they're 5-1, winning four times when scoring 2 runs.

Tigers now hit the road - where they have won 21 of last 31G....nine games with Chi, Oak and KC....trip starts in Chicago tom. night.

Leyland keep tabs on Tigers' reliever Al Alburquerque.
DETROIT -- Though Al Alburquerque finished out the ninth inning Saturday following a visit from head athletic trainer Kevin Rand, manager Jim Leyland was still slightly concerned about the soreness around Alburquerque's right hip area. He planned to keep tabs on it, but unless it grows into a bigger issue, it isn't going to keep the pitcher out of action.
Leyland has been looking for ways to ease Alburquerque into action after he missed about three weeks with a concussion. He's likely to continue easing him in for a while.
Alburquerque said Sunday morning he's feeling good, but the injury isn't a concern on his part.
