Detroit Tigers Team Notes
Got back from cigar night.
All my rsox fans are wondering if they make the playoffs, and if so will they beat our Tigers. They are in awe of JV.
After rally from four runs down, the Tigers' win streak reaches 12, longest since 1934.
Penny started: 6IP, 8H, 5R/1ER...Perry, Alburquerque, Coke and Valverde all w/ 1 scoreless IP ea., Coke gets W, Valverde 44th save.
Tigers now head to Oakland, where they could clinch as early as tom. night (again, if Indians lose tonight)....4Game series.
Leyland: "I will say this: Up to this point, we're not backing into it."
In Tigers' 14-game streak in '34, Mickey Cochrane hit .521 with 23 RBI in 12 games. Tigers hit .353 as team during that streak.
Tigers' 12-game streak ties TEX for longest of 2011. Last one longer: A's 20-gamer in '02. And now Tigers go to Oakland to play A's next.
Baseball reference had the Tigers for 3 pinch-hit HRs coming into today. Now at 5 pinch hit homers.
Alex Avila. Best hitting catcher in the AL, his numbers stack up with some really good hitters at less important defensive positions.
Tigers find another way to win late...score 3 in 9th on 2HR, one in 10th, beat W. Sox 6-5, and win 12th straight.
Tigers offense was quiet most of the day, Dylan Axelrod started and gave Sox 6 strong innings in first ML start.
That's when the expanded September rosters played big...Peralta - the first of 5 pinch-hitters in a row - struck out vs. Sale to start 9th.
Then Raburn hit PH HR to LF to make it 5-3. Ordonez worked Sale for walk...then Inge was announced as a pinch-hitter...Sox went to Santos.
But Tigers countered with Avila...pinch-hitting for the pinch-hitter...and he promptly hit 2-run HR to deep RightCenterField to tie game 5-5.
Santos had allowed 3HR all year going into series in Det. 10 days ago....Avila's HR was third he'd allowed in space of 6 batters vs. Tigers.
In the 10th....Martinez doubled off Santos 2/ 1 out, Rhymes went in as the pinch runner, then Guillen singled to CF to break tie, give Tigers 6-5 lead.
Pretty neat to see Guillen get rare start...and have big day - HR in 2nd, line single in 4th, line out in 6th, sharp single to deliver win.
Magic number is three to clinch Division...pending Indians game tonight. Indians loss in Texas, and it's down to two.
Tigers 12 Game win streak is longest for Tigers since 1934, when they won 14 straight. Magic # down to 3, 2 if Indians lose tonight in Texas.
Penny started: 6IP, 8H, 5R/1ER...Perry, Alburquerque, Coke and Valverde all w/ 1 scoreless IP ea., Coke gets W, Valverde 44th save.
