Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Tigers magic number is down to 4...win 11th straight, 5-0 over White Sox. Verlander will become first AL pitcher to win MORE than 23 since Viola in 1988 with his next win...and he has two more starts.

Verlander battled with Floyd thru 5IP, then, in 1-0 gm, Rhymes doubled, Cabrera walked, and Martinez - on 9th pitch - bombed 3-run HR to RF.

Tigers cruised from there...Verlander goes 7IP, 0 R on 6 H, 2BB/6K....now 23-5. Benoit worked out of jam in 8th, Valverde worked 1-2-3 9th.

In baseball history, there have only been 15 pitchers who have won 23 or more Games, and lost 5 or fewer. Justin has two more starts.

Tigers have won 21 of 25, and have beaten Sox 20 times in last 26 meetings. Tigers 12.5G lead is largest in baseball.

Justin's win was his 11th straight....on same night that Tigers won 11th straight....that might be a first.

Justin Verlander named Detroit Tigers nominee for the 2011 Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet.
Press Release from the Tigers official site

This season, Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers teamed up for the very special Verlander's Victory for Veterans Program, which began in May and has continued through each of his home starts. Verlander has hosted Veterans throughout the season from the John D. Dingell Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Detroit and the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System. The hosted Veterans sustained injuries or illness in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom or in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. The Veterans along with their families have continued to cheer on the Tigers from the comfort of Verlander's personal luxury suite. After serving our country, Verlander's Victory for Veterans has provided American Veterans with the special opportunity to enjoy a Tigers game with their family. Verlander is scheduled to be recognized for his nomination during a special on-field pregame ceremony at Comerica Park during the last homestand of the season.

"Justin Verlander is quite deserving of his nomination for the Roberto Clemente Award," said Elaine Lewis, Tigers' Vice President of Community Affairs and Strategic Planning. "Justin's dedication to the community exemplifies the character of the Detroit Tigers both on and off the field."
