Don Kelly will not exercise opt-out clause.
from JasonBeck'sTigersblog

"Instead, he said he has an informal agreement with the Tigers front office. If Kelly doesn’t make the Opening Day roster, team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski will try to find Kelly another team with a big-league job for him. If not, Kelly will accept an assignment to Triple-A Toledo."

Muaahaha!!

I KNEW it!! Kelly may be a *borderline* MLB player. but he isn't dumb. It is extremely unlikely that DD would find another ballclub that would want DK, especially this late in the preseason. when nearly EVERY one is very close to, if not already set with their 25-man rosters to begin the '13 season, leaving them next to no time to assess whether or not DK would be a decent fit with the team that they have constructed.

Regardless, since Kelly, as I have posted before, already knows all too damned well that Leyland is his last resort/best bet for being able to play in MLB on a likely PT basis this season, even long before he had that silly opt-out clause added to his minor league contract.

Edit: perhaps Dombrowski should get on the horn with the yanks' cashman, since it appears that they have become quite desperate, even this late in the preseason, for virtually any other ballclub's "table-scraps" Or like Rogo had hilariously posted on his blog, DD could maybe have Matt Tuiasosopo make the call for him...:hehe:

Tigers have indicated to other teams that Ramon Santiago is available.

The Tigers are shopping middle infielder Ramon Santiago, reports ESPN's Buster Olney (on Twitter). The 33-year-old Santiago has spent 9 of his 11 big league season in Detroit, but his performance fell off last year when he hit just .206/.283/.272 in 259 plate appearances for the Tigers.

March 27 in Tigers and mlb history:

1948 - Former slugger Hank Greenberg, who tormented the Cleveland Indians for most of his career as a member of the Detroit Tigers, is hired as the Indians' farm club director by Bill Veeck.

1973: Veteran pitcher Jim Perry of the Minnesota Twins becomes the first player in Major League Baseball to approve of being traded under the new "ten and five" rule. The Twins send Perry to the Detroit Tigers for a player and cash considerations. Perry, a 24-game winner in 1970, will win 14 games for the Tigers this year.

1973: The Atlanta Braves release former 30-game winner Denny McLain, ending his career at the age of 28. In 1972, the Braves had acquired McLain from the Oakland Athletics in a straight-up swap for first baseman Orlando Cepeda. McLain won the American League Cy Young Award in 1968 and 1969.

1986 - Major League Baseball's Rules Committee votes to change the designated hitter rule for the World Series, allowing a DH to be used in all games played in the American League club's home park, but not in the National League's. Since 1976, the DH had been used in all games in even years.

1989 - Sports Illustrated publishes a story about Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose's gambling activities. Rose will eventually agree to a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball as part of an agreement with Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti.

1995 - The National Labor Relations Board files for an injunction to restore previous work rules to the game, as part of the settlment of the 1994 strike.

2006 - Two days after minor league umpires said they intend to strike, management's lawyer denies that unfair labor practices have been committed.

Quintin Berry optioned to Toledo by Tigers - down to 28 players in camp. One more position player.

early injuries hurt Berry, so did excellent spring by versatile Don Kelly, plus Tigers needed RH hitter not LH to back up Dirks.
TomGage

When Tui starts in left, Berry on the bench would have meant Santiago was only backup IF.
The Tigers have no players currently on the 40-man with under 5 years of service who are out of options.

Detroit Tigers option Quintin Berry to Toledo, need to trim three more from roster before Opening Day.
