1910: William Howard Taft becomes the first U.S. President to throw out a ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day. Attending the game in Washington, D.C., President Taft tosses the first ball to future Hall of Famer Walter Johnson, who pitches the first of his 14 Opening Day Washington games, striking out nine, en route to a 3 - 0 one-hit shutout against Eddie Plank and the Philadelphia Athletics.

1911: Cleveland Naps star pitcher Addie Joss dies unexpectedly in Toledo, Ohio, from meningitis at the age of 31. Beset with arm injuries, Joss made just 13 appearances last season, but his 160 wins and ERA of 1.88, compiled in nine seasons, will earn him a plaque at Cooperstown in 1978.

1915: In the opening game at Shibe Park, Philadelphia Athletics pitcher Herb Pennock shuts out the Boston Red Sox, 5 - 0. Pennock gives up only one hit, a scratch single by Harry Hooper with two outs in the 9th inning.

1921: Harry Heilmann's bases-loaded single off Bugs Bennet in the bottom of the 9th gives the Tigers a 6-5 win over the White Sox.

1925: Two future Hall of Famers make their major league debuts with the Philadelphia Athletics in the same game.
Lefty Grove starts against the Boston Red Sox and leaves in the 4th inning after walking four and striking out nobody. He gives up five runs on six hits. In the 8th inning, Mickey Cochrane pinch-hits a single, while the Athletics go on to score nine runs in the last four innings to win, 9 - 8, in ten innings. Grove, known as Groves in Baltimore, is also listed that way in the New York Times box score. Grove will become the first pitcher to lead the American League in strikeouts and walks in the same year.

1925: In the first regular-season Chicago Cubs game to be broadcast on the radio, Quin Ryan announces the contest from the grandstand roof for WGN. Grover Alexander wins for the Cubs, 8 - 2, over the Pirates and helps himself with a single, double, and home run.

1925: The Cleveland Indians open the season with a 21 - 14 victory over the St. Louis Browns. The Indians score 12 runs in the 8th inning when the Browns make five errors. Browns first baseman George Sisler has four errors in the game, and the Indians' 21 runs set a major league record for the most runs scored by one club on Opening Day.

1931: At Braves Field, Jack Quinn of the Brooklyn Robins becomes the oldest pitcher to start an Opening Day game. The 47-year-old Pennsylvanian gets tagged with the lost as the Boston Braves beats Brooklyn, 7 - 4.

1942: Red Sox legend Ted Williams shakes hands with teammate Jimmie Foxx after hitting a HR vs. the Philadelphia A's on Opening Day at Fenway Park! Ted went 3-for-4 with 5 RBI's in the game.

1955: Elston Howard becomes the first black player in New York Yankees history. The 26-year-old catcher/outfielder makes his debut against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park as he hits a single with one RBI in the Yankees' 8 - 4 loss. Howard will play in 12 All-Star games and win the A.L. MVP in 1963.

1958: The Detroit Tigers signed Art Houtteman as a free agent.

1961: Frank Lary (1-0) pitches 1-hitter, Al Kaline has 3 hits and Rocky Colavito homers. The Tigers have 15 hits and beat White Sox 7-0.

1964: Tigers beat Athletics 7-3 on 2 RBIs each from Bill Bruton, Norm Cash, Bill Freehan. Bill Freehan and Jerry Lumpe have 3 hits each. Phil Regan pitches 8 1/3 for the win.

1964: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax throws his ninth complete game without allowing a walk as he beats the St. Louis Cardinals, 4 - 0, in his only career start on Opening Day.

1966: Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, born this day in San Angelo, TX.

1968: Jim Bunning wins his first game for the Pittsburgh Pirates, a 3 - 0 shutout over the Dodgers. For Bunning, it is his 40th career shutout and includes his 1,000th National League strikeout, becoming the first pitcher since Cy Young to reach the 1,000 mark in both the National and American Leagues. Bunning also joins Cy Young with 100 Wins in both leagues and retires in 2nd place with 2,855 Strikeout to Walter Johnson.

1968: At the Astrodome, New York Mets pitcher Nolan Ryan earns the first of his 324 major league victories. The 21-year-old right-hander hurls six and two-thirds innings of three-hit, shutout baseball to lead the Mets over the Houston Astros, 4 - 0. Danny Frisella takes the save in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Tommie Agee goes 2 for 3 with two runs and Art Shamsky 2 for 3 with two RBI. Larry Dierker is the losing pitcher.

1968: Tigers beat the White Sox 5-4 on a Bill Freehan walk-off single in the 10th inning. Fred Lasher with the win in relief.

1969: Bill Freehan appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

1969: The expansion Montreal Expos host their first game north of the border, marking the first time a regular-season major league game is played outside of the United States. The Expos win their debut at Jarry Park, edging the St. Louis Cardinals, 8 - 7.


1986: Kirk Gibson named AL Player of the Week.

1986: The Tigers get home runs from Lance Parrish, Darrell Evans, and Harry Spilman. They score 6 runs in the 6th inning to beat White Sox 10-8 in Chicago.

1990: Cal Ripken, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles begins a streak which leads to a major league record for the most errorless games (95) and total chances (431) by a shortstop.

1991: Nolan Ryan becomes the 12th pitcher in major league history to surpass 5,000 innings pitched and gets plenty of hitting help as Texas whips Baltimore, 15 - 3.

1995: The Detroit Tigers signed Mike Gardiner as a free agent.

2000: Tigers Juan Gonzalez belts first home run in Comerica Park history. Stadium opened earlier this month. Detroit beats Tampa Bay Devil Rays 10-5.

2001: By scoring in their 175th consecutive game, the Cincinnati Reds set a modern National League record for not being shut out by an opponent. Coincidentally, to break the record, Cincinnati beats Al Leiter and the New York Mets, 1 - 0, the last pitcher and team to shut out the franchise.

2001: A total eleven one-run games (six in American League and five in National League) breaks a record set on May 30, 1967 when there were a combined 10 one-run contests in the major leagues.

2002: Craig Paquette hits 2 home runs and 2 doubles, but the Tigers lose 13-7 in Minnesota.

2004: A day after Yankees teammate Mike Mussina earned his 200th career victory, Kevin Brown reaches the same plateau, beating the Devil Rays, 5 - 1. It is the first time in major league history members of the same pitching staff have won their 200th career victory in consecutive starts.

2004: The Detroit Tigers signed Joe Vitiello as a free agent.

2008: Trailing 9-5 to the Twins in the bottom of the 8th inning, the Tigers score 6 runs, including an RBI double by Magglio Ordonez and 2-run triple by Ivan Rodriguez, to win 11-9.

2012: The Minnesota Twins selected Clete Thomas off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

2013: Austin Jackson has 4 hits with a home run in the Tigers' 10-1 rout of the A's.

1911: Tigers beat the White Sox 2-0 in a blizzard-shortened game at Michigan & Trumbull. Despite the cold, the Tigers will get out to a hot 21-2 start on the season.

1915: Rube Marquard of the New York Giants no-hits the Brooklyn Robins, winning, 2 - 0.

1918: The American League season opens with Babe Ruth pitching a four-hit, 7 - 1, victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Boston Red Sox manager Ed Barrow will start Ruth's conversion to slugger later that season by working him into 72 games in the outfield and at first base.

1930: The Detroit Tigers (striped stirrups) and St. Louis Browns remove their caps for the flag raising ceremony on Opening Day. Tigers RHP George Uhle picks up the win and slugs a 2-R HR for the Detroiters.

1933: Lynwood 'Schoolboy' Rowe, standout pitcher for the Tigers, makes his big league debut memorable with a
6-hit 3 - 0 shutout victory over the white sox.

1947: Tigers shut out the Browns 7-0 on Opening Day in St. Louis. Eddie Mayo goes 2-for-4 with a double on his birthday.

1947: In his debut with the Pirates at Wrigley Field, Hank Greenberg's RBI double scores the game's only run.

1947: 28-year-old Jackie Robinson makes a historic debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first African-American to play major league baseball in the 20th century. Robinson goes 0 for 3 in his debut, but scores the deciding run in a 5 - 3 victory over the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. He handles 11 chances at first base, a new position for him. Coach Clyde Sukeforth, interim manager and the man credited with first scouting Robinson, guides the Dodgers to two victories before stepping down. Robinson is the first black player to appear in the majors since 1884.

1954: Hank Aaron collects the first hit of his major league career. The Milwaukee Braves' rookie goes 2 for 5 in a win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

1954: After a 51-year absence, big league ball returns to Baltimore as a crowd of 46,354 watch the Orioles beat the White Sox, 3 - 1, in the first game played at Memorial Stadium. A Baltimore ownership group, which includes Clarence Mills, Jim Keelty, Jerry Hoffberger and Zanvyl Krieger, bought the former St. Louis Browns and brought the franchise to the Charm City.

1957: U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower officially opens the season by tossing out the first ball at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. The ball is the 10 millionth Spalding baseball to be used in major league play.

1957: The Detroit Tigers released Bob Kennedy.

1958: Major League Baseball comes to California as the transplanted Giants and Dodgers play the first game on the Pacific Coast.
Rare footage of the first official major league game played on the West Coast! The San Francisco Giants defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 8-0 at Seals Stadium.

1961: Bill Bruton's first hit as a Tiger is a 3-run home run at Tiger Stadium in a 6-2 win over the White Sox.
Norm Cash goes 2-for-3 with a double and triple, and Dick Brown also hit a home run for Detroit.

1966: Dick McAuliffe hits a grand slam and Al Kaline adds a home run and a double as the Tigers win their home opener vs. the washington senators 8 - 3.

1968 - At the Astrodome, the New York Mets and Houston Astros play the longest game in National League history.
The six-hour and six-minute contest, in which each team has 79 at-bats and 11 hits, ends in the 24th inning when
Bob Aspromonte's grounder goes through the legs of shortstop Al Weis as the Astros win, 1 - 0.
It sets the mark as the longest NL game played to completion, the longest major league night game, and the first 23 innings are the longest major league scoreless game. The game ties the American League's longest complete game (Philadelphia Athletics 4, Boston Americans 1, in 24 innings on September 1, 1906).

1972: Reggie Jackson sports a mustache as the Oakland Athletics top the Minnesota Twins, 4 - 3, in 11 innings. Jackson is the first major league player with facial hair since Frenchy Bordagaray in 1936. Jackson starts a trend with Oakland, as owner Charlie Finley eventually encourages all of his players to grow mustaches.

1972: Tigers finally open the season after a players strike. Mickey Lolich strikes out 9 in a CG 3 - 2 win over the red sox. The Tigers would go on to edge the Red Sox for the division title that season by a half game.

1976: The New York Yankees defeat the Minnesota Twins, 11 - 4, in the first game at the newly-renovated Yankee Stadium. Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, and the widows of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth take part in pre-game ceremonies at the Stadium, which had been closed for the 1974 and 1975 seasons.

1977: Hank Aaron becomes the first player to have his uniform number retired by two teams. The Atlanta Braves retire his No. 44 during a pre-game ceremony. The Milwaukee Brewers had previously retired Aaron's number.

1983: Detroit Tigers pitcher Milt Wilcox is one out away from a perfect game when pinch-hitter Jerry Hairston singles, and Wilcox settles for a 6 - 0 one-hitter over the Chicago White Sox. This is only the third time in major league history a perfect game bid has been stopped with one out to go.

1993: Sparky Anderson earns his 2,000th victory as a manager as the Detroit Tigers rally to beat the Oakland Athletics, 3 - 2.

1997: The 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's breaking the color barrier in major league baseball is celebrated before 54,047 at Shea Stadium during a game between the Mets and the Dodgers. U.S. President Bill Clinton and Jackie's widow, Rachel Robinson, both speak during the 35-minute presentation, but the surprise of the evening occurs when acting Commissioner Bud Selig announces that Robinson's number 42 will be retired in perpetuity for every team.

1999: The Detroit Tigers selected Rob Sasser off waivers from the Texas Rangers.

2000: In the 2,800th game of his career, Baltimore Orioles infielder Cal Ripken, Jr. lines a base hit off Minnesota Twins pitcher Hector Carrasco to become the 24th major leaguer to reach the 3,000 career hit milestone.

2004: Fifty-seven years after the historic event, major league baseball begins the tradition of Jackie Robinson Day, an annual celebration marking the day the color line was broken. At big league parks across the country there are ceremonies honoring the ground-breaking Brooklyn Dodgers second baseman, including Commissioner Bud Selig joining his widow, Rachel Robinson, for a Shea Stadium tribute.

2004: The Detroit Tigers signed Eric Owens as a free agent.

2005: To commemorate the 58th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's first game in the big leagues, the Los Angeles Dodgers wear replicas of the old road uniforms worn by the 1947 team which played in Brooklyn. Derek Lowe throws a three-hitter blanking the host San Diego Padres, 4 - 0.

2008: Tigers get home runs from each of the 3-6 hitters in their lineup: Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ord??ez, Miguel Cabrera, and Carlos Guillen, to beat the Twins 6-5.

2009: Every player in Major League Baseball wears number 42 today, in honor of the anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color line. The practice will be repeated in future years.

2011: Jim Leyland savors his 1,500th win as a manager when the Tigers defeat the Athletics, 8 - 4, with a wild 10th inning. Oakland is cruising to a 1 - 0 victory after a solid start by Brandon McCarthy when Miguel Cabrera homers off Brian Fuentes to tie the game in the 9th. In the 10th, the A's commit three errors and the Tigers score 7 runs, two on a bases-loaded double by Brennan Boesch that breaks the tie. The A's then rally for 3 runs on their own in the bottom of the frame, but it is not enough to cancel Detroit's outburst. Leyland is the 19th manager in history to reach the 1,500-win milestone.

2014: Tigers and Indians are snowed out after 3 inches of snow falls in Detroit, breaking the city's seasonal record with a total of 95 inches.

2019: Today we honor the man who broke the color barrier when he made his historic MLB debut. Today we say, "Thank you, 42."

2021: The Detroit Tigers signed Juan Centeno as a free agent.

2022: Jackie Robinson Day is celebrated across North America on the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color line in Major League Baseball. In New York, NY, the city temporarily renames part of 42nd Street and Broadway "Jackie Robinson Way" and installs a large marker in a ceremony attended by a number of Hall of Famers and other former players, and the Empire State Building is illuminated in the colors of the Brooklyn Dodgers with a rotating 42 in Jackie's honor. The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inaugurates an exhibition dedicated to Robinson, with a special emphasis on the 1946 season he spent with the Montreal Royals of the International League and on other trailblazing Black Canadian teams and players, while tributes are held around the major leagues, including the now traditional wearing of his iconic uniform number by all players.

2024: Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog passes away at age 92. He is best known for leading the Kansas City Royals to three division titles and the St. Louis Cardinals to three World Series, winning the championship in 1982.

2024: The Detroit Tigers selected Ty Adcock off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
