Oh, and his "well this guys only 2 for 9 against the opposing pitcher, he sits" philosophy blows.

So that's the reason you keep him?

"Jim, you're shit and we all know it but what are you gonna do" -- DD.

I didn't give any reasons Mitch.

I'm saying I don't care either way because the actual managerial impact on games is far less than people think.

If he gets fired (which I expect if we fail to make the playoffs/win division),

Or if he gets extended 1 year (which I expect if we win the division),

Won't really matter, I won't miss him if he's gone, I won't cheer if he's back.

Most seem to believe a Manager means little yet some think we could have someone worse. Not sure how, since apparently they don't effect much.

I've always been of the idea that sometimes a Manager needs to be let go just because.

Leyland has always been a believer, take a guy out put his replacement in the same spot. So if Prince took the day off, even at DH, no doubt Kelly would have been hitting cleanup.

I always love the stuff Leyland says "They're not going to be happy with me tonight" as he's making out lineups. Because even he knows they're shit. Like when Dirks was playing and got hurt, before the speedster came up, Raburn would bat 2nd.

Leyland should be accountable for that. One of his biggest tasks and he messes it up.

The things that most people complain about on this board are the things that don't have a significant impact (line ups, pitching changes, giving days off). It is the other things that a manager does that have an impact on the overall record. If the players play hard and respect the manager he is doing his job. Boston is a great example. I'm sure there isn't a big difference between the way Leyland manages a game and the way Bobby Valentine manages a game. It is the behind the scenes stuff that makes a good or bad manager.

So that's the criteria. He must be good because he hasn't cost us WS titles or playoff wins? Lol.

I didn't say he was good, I said if he's the best option he should be the guy. I don't think he's bad like some others. A bad manager costs you playoffs appearances, playoff wins or chances at WS rings..I don't think he's done any of that. Now he may not be a good enough manager to give you that extra oomf to take a bad team and make them better, but those guys are few n far between.

What I mean Mitch, is like him or hate him Leyland is known as one of the best clubhouse guys there is. Like him or hate him, his players like and respect him.

Like Tom and others have mentioned, look what happened in Boston when Bobby V. called out one of his guys publicly, that shit storm will be remember for ages. Ozzie Guillen is another....

So yes, we could do worse than Leyland.

And yes, most of us don;t understand/like smokies lineups, but do you think changing them much makes a lot of difference? We have 3 guys on the team who can hit, and 4 guys who can draw walks, so no matter what order you put them in, it's going to be a mess.

The lineups and changes/rest/replacements are not the reason we are where we are.

He did though.

Took us from however many consecutive losing seasons to the WS in 1 year.

SI interviewed 291 MLB players and asked which manager they would like to play for. Leyland came in 3rd.

the guy who was 2nd on that list is available...Francona. Itd be awesome if we could get joe maddon from tampa lol. they do the survey every year and Leyland has won a lot, but like i said earlier i think the game is just starting to pass him by. he just doesnt get the social media part and is starting to have more ozzie-like moments with the press. im really starting to think that he might retire at the end of the season no matter how it turns out.

The way I look at it is if players want to come and play for him keep him. I would be in favor of Francona too. As far as the social media and press....I don't really care too much if the press doesn't like him. Most of them are assholes anyway!

Like Wayne Fontes?

:)

i dont really care about the press either, but he's starting to lash out at fans too. thats a no-no in my book.

This was 7 years ago though. A lot of people were better at what they do 7 years ago in sports.

I like the way Leyland handles the starters, hate the way he handles the bullpen and lineups.

I still have no problem with that either. The overwhelming majority of sports fans don't know very much about sports at all. Just listen to any sports talk radio show for 10 minutes. For every 1 intelligent call, you get 9 others that are incredibly ignorant. The problem with most fans is they don't have the ability to be objective. Emotion takes over.

And for the record, I do not see any scenario where Leyland gets fired after this year or retires. I just don't see Mr. I being fed up with him or moving in another direction. Like others have said, Leyland is a highly respected guy around the league and we have no clubhouse issues....and Mr. I is a loyal guy. He's not Steinbrenner or Jerry Jones. Leyland will absolutely be our manager next year (and really I think for at least the next 2 years).

I guess I'm on the fence with this one until the season is over at this point. Without a suitable replacement, I'm not sold on replacing him. But his use of postion players at times does make me question him. His lineups R like where did he come up with that? However I'm a thinking new thinking is needed for the most part. That could come from within too. Ie a new plan mite be needed.
