23. Detroit Lions

QB: Matthew Stafford
RB: Reggie Bush*
WR: Calvin Johnson
WR: Nate Burleson
WR: Ryan Broyles
TE: Brandon Pettigrew
LT: Riley Reiff
LG: Rob Sims
C: Dominic Raiola
RG: Larry Warford*
RT: Jason Fox

Offensive Overview: Broyles is penciled in as a three-wide starter despite tearing his right ACL last December, following a left ACL tear during his senior college season. Realistically, the Lions can't count on Broyles as an early-season contributor. The offense would look a lot better if they could. Stafford and Megatron are top-five talents at their respective positions, Sims is a plus left guard, and Bush was a terrific addition to the NFL's pass-heaviest offense, but there are average to suspect starters at each of the other six spots. Raiola is 34 and had to accept a massive pay cut to keep himself on the roster. Although I think he?ll be good, Warford is a third-round rookie. Short armed and an average athlete, Reiff would be better suited to guard. Burleson is going on age 32 coming off of a broken leg. Pettigrew is returning from a brutal season, where he dropped nine passes in 14 games. Entering his fourth season, Fox has never played an offensive snap.

LE: Jason Jones*
RE: Ziggy Ansah*
DT: Ndamukong Suh
DT: Nick Fairley
MLB: Stephen Tulloch
WLB: DeAndre Levy
SLB: Ashlee Palmer
LCB: Chris Houston
RCB: Darius Slay*
FS: Louis Delmas
SS: Glover Quin*

Defensive Overview: GM Martin Mayhew did a respectable job of plugging holes on his defense this offseason, drafting Ansah with the No. 5 pick, signing Quin to upgrade on Amari Spievey, and adding versatile Jones to man left end. Second-round pick Slay will be thrust into a starting role despite tearing a meniscus in his knee at his March Pro Day. (He opted against surgery.) The strength of this defense will be up the middle with Suh and Fairley at defensive tackle, Tulloch behind them, and solid safety play. The Lions will still be vulnerable on the edges because Ansah is so raw, Jones has never been an effective outside rusher, and Houston has always been stretched as a No. 1 corner. On paper, this at best is an average talent collection.

I'm interested to see if Fox can actually beat out Hilliard at RT. I think we'll be much better against the run, but I'm not expecting too much from the pass rush, which could be a big problem.

I really don't get all the criticism of our offensive line.

It's like we've all suddenly forgotten that Cherilus played like shit every season but one, and we actually nicknamed our left tackle Jeff Sackus for a decade.

Backus is all the sudden all pro? The guy who didn't even lay a hand on Peppers when he crushed our QB's shoulder into the dirt?

Our offense was ranked #2 last year with those guys on the ends, and we're really supposed to believe that we're so much worse off with Rieff on one side and Hilliard/Fox on the other, with Larry Warford upgrading RG?

It baffles me how these clowns that we hated for years are suddenly the death of this offense by moving on.

Defensively... KVB was completely nullified last season, he was useless as tits on a nun. Jones is a clear upgrade there. Ansah has more speed and power than Avril, so while raw, that looks like an upgrade to me too.

I actually like Palmer more than I did Durant, with Levy still being a huge question against the run.

While Slay may not be Revis, he's going to be an upgrade from the mix and match DBs we ran out there last year.

All in all, this team got better in just about every way... but it all comes crashing down on paper because Rieff is the LT??

I'm not buying it.

We need to pick up a LT. I am not for moving Reiff to g\guard. I would move him to RT.

Anyone think Devin taylor can take a DE spot and Jason Jones goes to rotational DT?

I don't think Taylor will make the team. He had Clowney on the other side and couldn't produce vs college kids. What makes you think he will be more productive vs professionals?

Because hes a athlete and 6'7. Long arms just plays too tall which causes him to give up ground in the run. If coaches can fix his pad level he can be good. Or else they would not have picked him. Hes the best 3rd day pick the Lions have made in a while.

EDIT-Its not like we are strong at DE we lost 3 players at the position. He will at least be a backup.

Offense:

oline is weaksauce. WRs are all injured.

Defense:

DEs are complete unknowns at this point. Jones has never been a good pass rushing DE and Ansah has like 5 games in college under his belt.

LBs are probably the worst group of lbs in the league behind 2 suspect run DTs. Fairley has actually played better vs the run then suh imo....but regardless plan on the lbs getting eaten alive. Secondary has improved but god forbid if there are any injuries in this unit or youll be seeing a full dose of spievey and wendlings all over again.

Depth is weak therefor our ST will suck again.

I give Taylor a strong shot to become a starter. Year 1? Dunno. Down the road, I'd bet on it. And here's why...

The tag on Taylor is that hes somewhat lazy. He takes plays off. Doesn't play hard for 4 quarters. He's a very athletic guy with some freaky physical tools, but he doesn't rev his engine all day.

Same tag on Nick Fairly coming into the draft.

I remember when Fairly did an interview about not wanting to be the punk on the line. He said playing next to Suh and KVB made him want to get hands on runners, and work harder, because he basically didn't want to be the bitch on that line.

Now it's time for Suh and Fairly to set tone on the line and see if Devin Taylor wants to be the punk. Nobody likes to be the punk.

Im also not buying that having clowney on the other end of the line should benefit him. He still had trash at the DT spots at SC so he still took a lot of chips and he doesnt have bad film. He was lazy but the All American Clowney on the other side also didnt have a crazy high motor. Spurriers thing never was defense and he really should have gotten more out of that D line. Clowney is crazy gifted so he still gets there. Taylor's biggest problem is pad level which is negated somewhat in the wide 9. He also struggled to play with his hands and a strong punch which is easily fixable. Shit these guys fixed Avril who didnt play with his hands til the last three years.

Also I agree that the oline is not as bad as this dude wants to make it seem. Reiff filled in well last year against a very good pass rush in houston and I thought played the best on the oline that day. Goz was horrendous as was peterman. Sims had a rough day with watt but picked up blitzes well and I thought Raiola ran blocked well but had an overall normal day for him. Reiff will be fine and Hilliard is on par with Goz. And Fox may be better. I'm sorry I dont care what people said about him after last season Goz was mediocre again and I am glad he is gone. Backus will be missed because of what he meant to the team but Reiff is the same type of player. Better run blocker than pass blocker and better suited for Rt than Lt. Also Reiff cant play guard lets all be glad we got Warford. If you dont believe go back and watch him struggle in the preseason games against third stringers.

No, she's definitely a nun. You should have heard how many times I made her say "oh God" and "Jesus Christ" last night.

Very religious girl!

lol

I have to agree with all you guys, there is no way the lines got "worse" this offseason. Keep in mind though how much they sucked last year so it isn't exactly a complement. How much better they actually got is yet to be seen but losing a broken down Backus, (as decent as he has been) Peterman, and Goz and replacing them with three young players is not a massive hit (now if we can just somehow lose Raiola).

Reiff is going to need a lot of help on the left. Pettigrew is going to be throwing a lot of chips. Fox I don't see doing jack but Hilliard is okay on the right. The problem is if one of the three goes down we are pretty much screwed, I think they will/have to add another vet tackle by TC.

The d line rests on the additions at DE, how fast Ziggy can get up to speed. Jason Jones will really have to surprise me but all are bigger guys who can play the run. They can't be any worse than Avril/KVB from last year though.

17 sacks, 26 hits and 54 hurries from 4 DEs with terrible terrible run defense. That is the very low bar to beat for these DEs from 2012.

Something in between 2011(26, 21 and 99 hurries) and 2012 sacks/hit/hurries and average run D is actually a huge upgrade.

brilliant you really nailed that line up. I think we probably go 0-16 since hughes didnt pick this team and wasnt consulted. He is the most correct analyst ever and we should bow to his knowledge. Especially Fairley having chicken legs or how suh's cap hit next year in any way effects his play on field. Also he knows that what every player is going to do before they do it. We just shouldnt even have a season just let Hughes tell us how it was going to go. I assume it will be that every player sucked and that mayhew set a bag of dogshit on fire at hughes's doorstep. Then burnt his house down while peeing on his car. It will be a great story.

You missed an item -- if a rookie does well, Xanders gets the credit for the pick.
