Ex-Lions, from nothing to everything

Stupid? The Lions offered Avril a big contract. He took less to go to Seattle.

I for one did not want to bring avril back at 10 mil cause we needed so many other pieces and he wasn't the best of fits on our defense. However, SEA getting him cheap and being able to let him just do what he does is a great move for them. He was asked to do one thing and he did it well in limited playing time throughout the year. Superbowl he had to be drooling...peyton had to throw the entire game and they couldn't run the ball the entire game.....perfect for avril.

I felt we could get similar production from practically anyone with fairley and suh healthy on the inside. Ansah put up decent numbers as a rookie and was out some time. If he continues to develop then the decision to let avril go was the correct one for the money.

Ansah's upside is WAY higher than Cliffs but Avril did have a hell of a season doing what he does best. I felt bad for Ramirez on that first play. One former Lion the goat and one a shining star.

Don't feel sorry for Ramirez. He probably put 10 g's on the first score being a safety lol

Did not the Lions offer him a contract, he turned it down, they tagged him, then played another year? This could of been avoided, so yes, the Lions are stupid still. By Avril not accepting the Lions offer was stupid on his part but from a monetary view in hindsight, as no one knew what the CBA was going to produce. Avril knew this organization was going no where and it would have taken an insane amount of money for him to accept a contract. Stupid Lions.

New CBA was already in place when they franchised Avril. It was the correct call to franchise Avril after his big 2011 season going into 2012 and to offer him a long term deal. After 2012 a down year for Avril with horrendous run defense, it was the correct call to let Avril walk. Avril redeemed himself in Seattle in pass rush but still sucked in run defense. And the Lions replaced Avril well with Ansah, Taylor and Young stepping up. TBD on Jason Jones.

correct call would have been to extend him prior to 2011 for cheap when he wanted to sign longer term. Mayhew challenged him and basically said prove it that you deserve an extension...avril had his best year as a pro...then mayhew didn't pay him. Bad job mayhew.

But he did pay him and offered him a contact, whcih Avril turned down. 2010 Avril had a nice year too. 2011 we were up against the cap and Avril was cheap and Mayhew wanted 4 free agents (Tulloch, Durant, Wright and Houston). All were needed for playoffs. You don't pay Avril long term in 2011 in a tight cap.

Right moves in 2011 to keep him cheap, 2012 to franchise and 2013 to let him walk. Mayhew did nothing wrong in all 3 offseasons.

And maybe that extra motivation having to prove got Avril to play on that level in 2011. Which in turn led to playoffs. Good motivatin by Mayhew.

That would be one hell of a bet... Imagine had they started at the 20. Dude would have had to LAUNCH the ball to get that boy into the end zone haha. Have you guys heard of the "conspiracy" that they are looking into Peyton possibly throwing the game? Bunch of bs if you ask me. Seahawks put it on em'. That's all that happened plain and simple.

Here is the 2011 cap for your reference hughes
Spent 2 million on Houston, 3.25 million on Tulloch, 3.5 million on Wright and 2.375 million on Durant. Had to restructure Stafford and Calvin to get this space.
Avril was 2.61 million.

1.6 million remaining. They had no room to give Avril a decent long term deal.

How much less money did avril take to play for a decent organization? 8 mil?

It was more the Lions offered him a good deal, he turned down because he wanted more and then he realized he couldn't make that much so he took Seattle's offer.
