First Round thread

Wants for Detroit Round 2

Hunter. Big speedy outside WR
Watson. Right Tackle, Reiff at Left
Carradine. 2 young DEs would be good. Mitigates the Ansah boom or bust risk
Warford: Good Right guard

good list.....id add a corner to that but i know youre in love with the emergency room we call our current #2 cb situation.

With the difficulty the Lions have had vs mobile QBs, you need guys at DE who are extremely athletic which allows them to not only sprint to the QB ala Avril style, but also change direction and make a play instead of simply running by it. Ansah has the athleticism to do that and demonstrated the ability to make plays in those situations.

We need another athletic DE on the other side to really make the DL solid, and it is possible Ansah will need a year to really start showing his potential the same way JPP did, but even if he does little this year I'm glad they got him because his future has huge potential with the DTs he gets to work with.

Sure he will make mistakes next year, he will be a rookie after all. Next year is when I think he will really start to put it together. Everyone wanted some stud DE who would dominate as a rookie, but this draft class just doesn't have that according to EVERYONE. Ansah has as good a chance of being an impact player as any other DE, probably moreso thanks to his athleticism. Much depends on how fast he picks up the NFL level of play.

ya ya we get all that. problem is he hasnt even picked up the college level of play yet in a shitty conference lol. He'll get trucked in the run game....hopefull he can put together some numbers as a pass rusher.

Best avail for rd 2. We got pick 4. I like menelik watson OT, Damontre Moore DE. Wreh wilson, jamar taylor, robert alford might be the cbs were looking at. Ertz or Justin Hunter may be the offensive playmakers they have on their boards.

Manti Te'o ILB Notre Dame
Justin Hunter WR Tennessee
Geno Smith QB W Virginia
Menelik Watson OT Florida St
Cornellius (Tank) Carradine DE Florida St
Robert Woods WR USC
Eddie Lacy RB Alabama
Zach Ertz TE Stanford
Ryan Nassib QB Syracuse
John Cyprien S Fla Int'l
Keenan Allen WR California
Johnathan Jenkins DT Georgia
Margus Hunt DE SMU
Matt Barkley QB USC
D.j. Swearinger S S Carolina

Dont count out David Amerson either, pretty sure he visited Detroit

how the hell does NE do this every year?

Lets see if they can actually draft anyone with this those extra picks. NE gets way too much credit for the trades they do.

All the things I've read talk about how his run defense is the best part about his game right now. Which is why some think he is more NFL ready than JPP was.

Out of that list, put me down as a Hunt slappy. Another big boom or bust guy, but could you imagine a d-line of Ansah/Suh/Fairley/Hunt? You'd have two big old monsters in the middle and two physical freaks outside with 4.5 speed. I didn't love Ansah at #5, but if they went that direction, I could probably get on board quickly.

Give me Damonte Moore in Rd 2. I would not be disappointed with a guard or WR but what do you guys think of Cyprian? They have a lot of options with this pick.

combine comparison

Ansah Aldon Smith
Height 6'5" 6'4"
Arms 35 1/8" 35 3/8"
Weight 271lbs 263lbs
Hands 10 1/4" 9 3/4"

40yrd dash 4.63sec 4.78sec

Bench 21 Reps 20reps

Vert 34.5" 34"

Broad 118" 118"

3 Cone 7.11sec 7.19sec

20yd Shuffle 4.26sec 4.5sec

Hate to do it, but:

Ansah vs Ikaika Alama-Francis

Ht 6-5 vs 6-5
Wt 271 vs 280
40 4.63 vs 4.73
Vert 34.5 vs 35
Broad 118 vs 114
3 cone 7.11 vs 7.31
20 shuf 4.26 vs 4.62

Just goes to show the measurables only tell you so much. Ikaika Alama-Francis like Ansah wasn't all that productive in college, 10 sacks, he too didn't play against top competition, but he's a workout warrior so we took him in the 2nd.

The other side of the coin though is that our coaches worked with him for a week, they know exactly what they're getting you would hope, takes some of the risk out of it. How awesome would it be to have a dominant pass rusher coming off the edge next to Fairley and Suh?

Now, OT from FSU in the 2nd?

Whenever I look at combine numbers it always reminds me of how Calvin Johnson did at the combine, LOL!
6-5, 240, 4.33 forty, 43 vertical, 139" broad jump.

I watched some more Bartell games last night. Still don't understand why Oakland cut the guy. I think Bartell and the 3 young developing can get it done. We'll see what Mayhew does with 36 and 65. Jamar Taylor could be an option or Wreh Wilson or Logan Ryan at 65.

I wouldnt mind Cyprien. I am worried that Delmas cant stay healthy and our depth at safety is horrible. I do think we will have trade possibilities which could be the right move. There is a lot of depth in this draft.

I like Damontre Moore,or Matheiu (LSU).

Matheiu isn't getting drafted by us. Not sure why all the love for him in the 1st place, he's a great kick returner (well, when he played 2 years ago he was), but was never a shutdown cover corner and wasn't the #1 corner on that LSU team ever, in fact he was third best at times.

Lions are gonna nab Menelik Watson with the 2nd pick
