Football team Has Left Paris, France

Nonetheless, still odd. Was it about education when the 3 students shop lifted in China? If you really think these players want to learn while in Europe you're diluting yourself.

diluting myself?

Just saying many football and basketball players don't really care about their studies. They might says it's for educational purposes but it's basically to get a free trip. Are they really going to want to know the history of the Eiffel Tower?

Yep, a free trip where they will learn some things about the place they are visiting.

When I traveled to Paris. I learned a lot.

I, also, took a trip to Normandy while I was there. Awesome trip and educational experience. I read that the football team will be going to Normandy, as well.

Last year and this year, as part of the trip, some of the athletes are participating in a study abroad program.

Some of the football team didn't go, for whatever reason. It was their choice.

Now, they're going to approach Normandy Beach from the land side, right?

Because with Harbaugh...ya never really know.

No offense but you're not a football player wanting to turn pro someday.

I know I'm on the small minority here but some football players just do not care. I'm sure some will take it all in and I'm not so certain Harbaugh cares about the learning aspect. Hell, many of these guys would never have been accepted into Michigan without football.. But that's a different point and makes no sense in this discussion so I regress..

Okay, so with the talk of student athletes deserving to be paid, if they were being paid would they be paid for going on these kinds of trips?

Another topic if they went that way paying athletes.. Would they all get similar pay or based on stats? That could lead to many problems.

Dude, you seem to have your panties in such a bunch over something that couldn't be less consequential.

The next time you're a head football coach at a university, or an athletic director at a university, and an anonymous donor offers to finance a trip for the football team to a European destination, just say, "thanks, but...no thanks...these guys aren't here to get an education or to learn anything - they're here because they're wanting to turn pro someday."

Lol

There are some pics on twitter from @chengelis and @nickbaumgardner

Example. https://twitter.com/nickbaumgardner/status/990559609533452289?s=21

. They went to beach, cemetery, had flags and place a block m of flowers at statue

Did anybody remember to tell them that that's where D Day happened, and the Allied Forces gained the upper hand in the World War II?

Because if nobody did...they all probably should have just stayed home, and simply kept on thinking about wanting to turn pro some day.

I was a six sport athlete in high school and used to skip school occasionally and go to Henry Ford/Greenfield/MSC/DIA with my buddy. Not all athletes are mindless drones. Jock =! Idiot

And before you say you didn't say that, that's exactly what you implied.

When did I say the word all? If I implied anything It was that some are mindless drones that have gotten carried though school. I'm certain some Michigan football players are there to learn.

And the original point that was posted was that the Athletic department was paying for this not an individual. I knew some athletes at my school who ditched and went to McDonald's.

The athletic department pretty much runs on donors, so donors paying for a trip to Europe and donors donating money to the athletic department are pretty much the same thing.

From how the trip to Italy has been depicted on the Amazon Prime documentary, I think these trips are going to make lifelong memories for the kids; some of whom had never been on a plane, let alone to another country. I am sure this year's trip will be the same for the players and coaches.

Of course some knob on Twitter tried to say Harbaugh taking the current team to Europe is a slap in the face of those involved in the Draft. You know, in case any NFL GMs or Owners needed to talk to Harbaugh and he was off in Europe running around with his current, enrolled roster of players.

Jesus some people will find a way to bitch about anything related to Harbaugh.

I'm sure they already do in a lot of places, just not openly.

I question the idea that a scholarship is "enough" compensation.

the standard shouldn't be "Oh shit, $40,000 would've been a lot of money to me, back when I was 18 in 1976"

Instead, I think we should consider this:"the NCAA is a fabulously wealthy monopoly... a huge pie. and with every TV contract, it keeps getting bigger. How can we divide up the pie to ensure everyone's - players, coaches, and schools - incentives align, and produce entertaining and competitive sports, without letting scumbag coaches, ADs, real estate developers and other hangers-on profit from it?"

for one thing, not every NCAA athlete, even on football and basketball teams, gets a scholarship, or a full scholarship. and there's been plenty of commentary about how even full rides don't address the full costs of attendance. And they don't take into account the obvious tension between "maintaining eligibility"
and majoring in whatever you want." what's the price of that?

the people opposing players getting compensation seem to be more likely to misstate the facts and jump to conclusions here. there are ways to do it that don't involve negotiating contracts with players like in the NFL.

I've said it before, but I would be far more ok with the idea that a scholarship is fair compensation if the players actually got what a full ride really means. If you're pushed to practice as much as humanly possible and discouraged from taking more classes than required or the degree you really want to go after, you're not really getting the college experience. That's why I think scholarships should extend beyond the playing years to cover a couple or even a few years of exclusively being a student.
