Fox News GOP debate

Taibbi's take on why Fox News' treatment of Trump will backfire, which seems to make sense to me. There's a reason every politician emphasizes their individuality & independence from "groupthink" or special interests; it's practically a requirement for voters to believe that about any candidate they'd consider. Even Sarah Palin knew that (though she mangled the concept with her "Team of Mavericks" quote). And here Fox goes and craps all over that. (link):
What the Goldbergs and the Wills and Krauthammers of the world probably don't get is that by singling Trump out for abuse, they're almost certainly boosting his campaign. First of all, while it might have looked like a damning image to see Trump alone onstage with his hand up and refusing to pledge not to run as an Independent, on another level it was a great Trump moment. As it has been all season, there was Trump, and everyone else. That scene just made the other nine guys onstage look like what they are, stooges beholden to their party and their donors, unable to think for themselves.

The main argument of all of Trump's conservative critics seems to be, "He's not a real Republican! He'll destroy the party establishment!" The people making these criticisms seem to assume that conservative voters will see this as a bad thing.
But there are plenty of Tea Party-type voters out there who hate the Republican Party establishment almost as much as they hate the Democrats. There are also plenty of right-wing voters who think George Will and Charles Krauthammer are smug media weasels only slightly less disgusting than the Rachel Maddows and Keith Olbermanns of the world. A know-it-all is a know-it-all
I gotta give Trump credit for this dis:
Stung by Trump's criticism of him as a guy who "couldn't buy a pair of pants," Goldberg blasted Trump as a grifter and a RINO who is easier to believe as a "stalking horse for his dear friend Hillary" than as a Republican nominee.
"a guy who couldn't buy a pair of pants"... LOL!

Everyone keeps thinking there's no way Trump could be the Republican nominee or (jesus...) President... but it keeps getting more and more likely.

Though to be fair, I don't see any way in hell he beats whoever the Democrats put up there.

I sure hope your right...

I don't see Trump surviving a full political vetting ...there must be people out there he screwed, cheated and lied to that would surface.

With all his (failed) business dealings, he sure to have bribed, lied or scammed someone or something.

If that video of Romney insulting the '98%' could sink him, there's something out there on The Don ...hell, might even be simple sexual harassment of a woman from The Apprentice

No, and they're already scrambling to burn him, however, see, e.g. Sarah Palin, VP candidate, 2008: this party's vetting has been even less competent than they've been in allowing Trump out of the gate.

I miss Olbermann's "Worst Person in the World" commentary, he once picked a Grosse Pointe MI blue-blooded rightwinger woman who refused to give out any Halloween candy to young trick or treaters, unless their parents were going to vote for McCain/Palin in the upcoming '08 election.

As far as Jonah Goldberg,he of the National Review, and author of the book "Liberal Fascism" I loathe him as much as I do Coulter, Malkin, Limbaugh, Hannity, and Smegyn Smelly-Andrea Tarantula @ Tox Spews.

But there are MANY more, albeit less well known Reichwing columnists @ Townhall, of whom I have read their attacks on socialist liberals and Democrats, one of the most batshit-crazy being the Reverend Doug Giles, whose daughter pretended to be a prostitute for her pimp undercover activist James O'Keefe, when they tried to smear ACORN back in '08.

I don't think so. What I see in Trump is have has some very good ideas but just isn't President worthy. He just can't keep calling everyone morons, right or wrong - you need at least a little decorum.

This is interesting. I didn't know Trump had any ideas. I watched part of the debate and they didn't really get to anything I would call an idea. I don't quite care enough to google it and look up what those ideas might be, but the fact that they exist is news to me.

He wants to build a wall along the border with Mexico, which isn't new, but he wants to make the Mexican government pay for it, which I haven't heard from anybody else.

I am not sure the GOP vetting will take him out, but to be the nominee or close to it would make things really heat up.

I'm not sure what ideas he has either, beyond the classic populist rhetoric all 'Washington outsiders' spew.

He's a self promoter and personality. He's not as successful as he portrays himself to be and not much of a thinking man's man.

Hugely entertaining so far, though

I didn't watch the debate so I can't say but over the preceding weeks he has some ideas I like.. and I won't get into a debate because I don't really care but I have liked some of the things he said..

Did you agree with how he fired Gary Busey on The Apprentice?

It's amusing to sit back and watch conservatives argue with each other over Trump

In one camp you have people who think Trump is an egotistical clown, all flash and no substance, won't contribute anything beyond blaming people, but is a threat to split the vote if he's tossed aside

In the other camp, you have people angry with Fox News for going after Trump, asking him gotcha questions in an effort to make him look bad. There's concern of a GOP establishment conspiracy to torpedo Trump's campaign

I actually saw people claiming that Fox has gone too far to the left, that we now need a news channel with real conservative/libertarian viewpoints.

It's still very early in the race, but there has to be some concern on the right. Based on the polls so far, Trump has quite a bit of support, enough for me to think it goes beyond some insignificant faction of voters. Do they go all-in with Trump, faults and all, in the hopes that he can challenge Hillary? or do they shut him out in the hopes that he won't come back and screw them over? Obviously the best solution is to force Trump to drop out of the race, but that might be easier said than done.

Like I said though, still early...the sooner they dispose of Trump, the sooner people will forget about him.

Really the only thing he has said (aside from the whole Mexican immigrants are rapists and murderers) is he "Wants to make America great again". Then he goes on to say how we used to be so great, but now we are letting China and other countries take our greatness. What he hasn't said is how he's going to take that greatness back.

He one of those guys with a great campaign slogan, the problem is it's hollow. Like under his hair.
