where did people become so sure that private contractors can do things cheaper than the government?

sure there may be some circumstances where it's more efficient to privatise a service, but in a lot of cases it's not. we relied heavily on private contractors for security and logistics in Iraq, and I remember reading that the cost on a per-day basis, adjusted for inflation far outweighed the daily cost of WWII... a conflict fought all over the world, that required us to build the largest navy that ever sailed just to get our troops where they needed to go...

I think the same thing when idiots parrot some comment they read on some right-wing site about how the post office loses money... it's NOT SUPPOSED to make money! It's a subsidized mail service offered to the public. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than UPS or Fedex which are for-profit companies obligated to maximize profit.

it's not always in everyone's long term interest to squeeze every last dime out of a consumer, layoff every public sector employee, cut down every tree, or pump every single barrel of oil...

how else is it supposed to work? maybe in LaLa Land the government can just say "okay we're done plowing roads as of right now. here you go... the market can now come up with a way to plow all the roads and interstates for cheap, ensuring that even roads no one lives on but are otherwise essential to interstate commerce or emergency vehicle access will be plowed."

... but in real life you'd still have a govt official overseeing the contracts to ensure the public's and official needs are met.
