Game 14: Lions @ Giants Thread

The Lion's defense was strong in New York once again, holding an eighth straight opponent to fewer than 21 points -- their best since 1961 -- but it eventually broke in the fourth quarter.
New York drove eight plays for 71 yards, and Eli Manning capped it by finding Odell Beckham for a one-handed touchdown pass.

Stafford actually looked fine despite playing through a middle finger injury on his throwing hand. Only a couple passes appeared to be affected by the injury/glove, and he finished 24 of 39 passing for 273 yards and one interception.

Dwayne Washington opened the game with a 12-yard run, but the Lions combined for just 44 yards on their other 18 carries the rest of the game.
And Zach Zenner squandered Detroit's best scoring chance by fumbling into the end zone as he ran inside the 5-yard line.

The loss was just Detroit's second since Oct. 2 -- which also was the last time they were held without an offensive touchdown.

Anquan Boldin played in his 200th career game. He now has 1,067 catches, which fourth most for a player at this stage of his career and 10th overall.

Matthew Stafford played the game with 185 touchdowns in his eight-year career, the exact same number that Eli Manning had in his first eight season.
Stafford was held without a TD pass against the Giants, but will have two more opportunities to pass Manning.

Asa Jackson earned the start at the nickel, with Quandre Diggs out for the year and Adairius Barnes released this week. But he struggled early. He wasn't sure whether he was supposed to be on the field for the game's first play, then allowed a touchdown at the other end of the series.
He was replaced by Don Carey at one point in the second quarter and allowed a TD catch to Odell Beckham in the fourth.

Matt Prater accounted for all of Detroit's points on two field goals. He's now hit 19 straight and has 30 overall on the season, which matches a career best and is third in franchise history.
Most field goals in a season in Lions history:
1. Jason Hanson 34 (1993)
2. Jason Hanson 32 (2012)
3. Matt Prater 30 (2016)

Ezekiel Ansah snapped his 13-game sack-less streak by dropping Eli Manning on the final play of the third quarter.

Rookie A'Shawn Robinson batted down his seventh pass of the year, which is just one off Robert Porcher's franchise record of eight (1994).

Whitehead finished with 12 total tackles and one for a loss.

Manning completed 20 of 28 passes for 201 yards, and Odell Beckham Jr. made a one-handed touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter as the Giants won for the eighth time in nine games.
Beckham finished with six catches for 64 yards for the Giants, but his one-on-one battle with Darius Slay never materialized as Slay left the game in the first half with a hamstring injury.

Stafford completed 24 of 39 passes for 273 yards, but his receivers got little separation against a Giants secondary that lost its best cornerback to a back injury early in the game.

The Lions reached the end zone three times Sunday, but Zach Zenner lost a fumble in the end zone early in the second quarter that Olivier Vernon recovered for the Giants;
the Lions settled for a 33-yard Matt Prater field goal on the opening possession of the third quarter;
and Stafford threw an interception on his final pass of the game just before the two-minute warning.

The Lions had one final shot to make it interesting down the stretch. Taking the ball with just under four minutes remaining, Stafford steered the offensive inside the Giants' 20, but was intercepted on a pass intended for Anquan Boldin in the end zone.

To add to the Lions’ woes, Tate suffered a potential concussion on the play.
Update: The Lions didn't update what body part Golden Tate injured but he is Not in concussion protocol.
He would not say what he hurt, either, when he spoke after the game.

The Lion's offense only produced 273 receiving yards, Golden Tate had 122 of them.

This was Anquan Boldin’s 200th career game, he had three catches for 13 yards, but two of them came on important third downs.

Sam Martin’s first quarter 63 yard punt, tied a season long.

Rookie Anthony Zettel had his first career sack.

Ziggy Ansah got his first sack of the year.

Brandon Copeland blocked a punt.

Andre Roberts stepped out of bounds while accepting the second-half kickoff, drawing a flag against New York. It was a savvy move, and if it sounds familiar, that's because Green Bay did it to Detroit back in Week 3.
It's a dumb rule, and Roberts was smart to take advantage of it.

Based on live playoff probabilities, the Lions and Packers are exactly 50-50 to win the NFC North at this point in time.
Lions entered day with a 64% chance. Packers entered with a 30% chance.

The Lions sputtered and struggled Sunday in a 17-6 loss to New York on Sunday. Detroit couldn't run the ball and appeared to have a far too dumbfuck conservative game plan, particularly in the second half.
It continued to set up a potential showdown with Green Bay in Week 17 -- possibly for one playoff spot.

Considering who Detroit has the last two weeks of the season -- at Dallas and home in the finale against a Green Bay team that appears to be finding itself -- the Lions for the first time in a long time have a lot to be worried about.

Tate 8 catches for 122 yards on 13 targets.
Zenner 4 catches for 52 yards.
M. Jones 3 catches for 41 yards.
Ebron 4 catches for 36 yards.
A. Boldin 3 catches for 13 yards.
D. Washington 2 catches for 9 yards.

New York limited Detroit to 5 of 14 on third down and 324 yards.

Webvideo highlights/lowlights of the Lions loss to the f'n giants and refs.

The Lions were just 3-of-9 scoring touchdowns inside the red zone over their last two contests. They were 0-for-3 this week.

New York entered the game allowing the lowest touchdown percentage in the red zone at just 43.2 percent.

Stafford’s three worst performances this season came in Week 4 in Chicago (56.8 passer rating) and the last two weeks while he’s been dealing with the injured middle finger on his throwing hand.
He had a 64.3 rating last week vs. Chicago and finished Sunday’s game against the Giants with a rating of 71.8.

Lions rushed 19 times for 56 yards.

It was Detroit’s first game this season without scoring a touchdown.

DET-NYG GRADES: SHORT PASSING GAME WORKS FOR GIANTS IN WIN.
Eli Manning, Odell Beckham Jr. grade well in close victory over Lions, while pass rush gets Lions QB Matthew Stafford off his game.

I think the reduction in broken tackles has lead to the decreasing productive offense. We haven't been a team that beats you in the air under JBC. We won by making short throws and creating after the catch. The weapons doing nothing after the catch has killed us. Throwing the ball 2 yards isn't a good strategy if you get tackles right away. If you're going to be dink and dunk you need YAC.

That's on Cooter. They went downfield early on and it worked. Then they went away from it. Why? Moronic playcalling. Either Cooter needs to somehow open the playbook or this team is done. Can't be too mad tho because we're playing with WRs that are not true #1's. Add that we have a zero running attack and this offense is limited.

Jim Caldwell had no interest in challenging absurd Odell Beckham 'catch'.

Odell Beckham Jr.'s 'catch' against Lions: Worst call of the year? look at the comments section if you want.

Caldwell was also scrutinized for choosing to punt from New York's 40-yard line with 50 seconds left in the first half, rather than have Matt Prater attempt a 57-yard field goal. Prater has hit from as deep as 58 this year, but in the outdoor elements -- including rain -- Caldwell was wary of a miss that would give New York a short field at the end of the half.

Everyone knew points would be at a premium today.

I think they should've went for it, or at least faked like we were going to, trying to draw them offsides.

It falls on Caldwell on his desire to not turn the ball over. We've seen historically, this team turns the ball over with great frequency when we call more downfield plays.

You also hit on it. We have good, not great WRs. Poor running game, a QB that is innacurate 10+ yard throws, questionable blocking. We really are a mediocre talented offense and we reflect that in our scoring.

Defense seems to be playing over their head, offense seems to be playing at their talent level.

You can only do so much as coaches. The fact we control our own date with 2 games left is pretty remarkable.

Fuck history, man. Stafford has turned the corner and his accuracy has improved dramatically. I agree though...Cooter and especially Caldwell are gutless.

And after saying all that, I still think we're at least contenders for the NFC. There isn't reall a standout team in the NFC that truly scares me. Still wide open in my eyes....we can hang with any NFC team. Even with our offensive woes.

The two biggest gripes I had in this game were not challenging the obvious dropped pass and punting from the Giants' 40 in the first half with about 30 seconds left.

The non-challenge was pathetic, even though it was only 4 yards. The guy dropped it, throw your flag and get those yards back. You never know how important that will be in the series.

Punting from the 40 was soft. Any time you are on that side of the field in decent position with very limited time left in the half, roll the dice a bit. It ended up being a net 20 yard punt.

I agree we can compete. The way we play that's the goal, to be in every game with a chance to win. I don't see anyone we can't hang with.

At the same time there is no one we will play the rest of the season or potentially in the playoffs where I would put money on the Lions. Because every game could go either way.

This Giants game was very winnable. Zenner coughing it up on a well designed and blocked play just can't happen. However the prior play broken coverage, wide open, you need that hit in stride. Slight underthrow caused Tate to slow and wait and allowed the CB time to make the tackle. In stride that is a TD.

Ebron not getting 2 yards on a 3rd and 2 is a killer.

That plus great play on the other near TD defended by Apple makes it tough.

We aren't a team that can have many mistakes and expect to win. We get a few plays a has to score, we need to make those.

Tonight is a big game. As the season's going we're thinking if GB beats up and wins the division we still get a WC spot but I see TB is on a 5 game win streak and is 8-5 right now.

The playoffs are a little in jeopardy right now with injuries, the packers within a game, and playing in dallas and ending the regular season with green bay, two teams who no matter how good or flawed, seem to always get breaks from refs, but with all that aside,

In my opinion, the one guy watching, who is in charge and pulling the strings on this team, Bob Quinn is making notes and decisions on not only player personnel and where they need to draft, trade for, or sign as a FA to bolster a weak position, he is also looking at moves, non moves, by Caldwell, Cooter, etc. the decisions or lack of, game plans, etc.
Might be some coaching changes too.

I refuse to get mad at Stafford after a 67yd play lol. You're reaching. It was a good throw and a huge play. Zenner needs to hold onto the damn ball. The Lions left 14 for sure points on that field today. A fumble by Zenner and a lucky tipped ball off Eli Apple's pinky to stop an easy TD. But the Lions need to capitalize and today they didn't. Game of inches that didn't go our way today....

I hope so. The first 55 plus minutes of every game this year cannot be overlooked. Today's game was a realization that this is how MOST of our games should have ended, with the other team not giving us a chance to come back in the end.

Not mad, it was a good throw, just saying great one makes the TD. Zenner was the goat of that drive for sure.

I guess Andre Drummond was getting a bunch of shit on twitter for rooting for the Giants yesterday. Dummies
