Game 3: Lions @ Eagles Thread

Here's a crazy number courtesy of ESPN Stats & Information. The last time the Lions were unbeaten in Week 4 or later and faced another unbeaten team was Oct. 7, 1962. The 3-0 Lions played the 3-0 Packers in Green Bay (the Packers won).
For context ? Matt Patricia was almost 12 years away from BEING BORN,
70-year-old DC Paul Pasqualoni had just turned 13 and William Clay Ford Sr. was a year away from buying the Lions. So...it's been a while.
It's also only the ninth time since 1940 the Lions have not lost in their first three games of the season. The Lions are 3-5 in those games. Unbeaten Detroit (2-0-1) faces undefeated Kansas City (3-0) on Sunday.

Lions have had terrible bad luck if you count drops.
I don't. Those are fuck ups, not bad luck.

Agnew muff.
Another fuck up. Not bad luck.

Crazy catches by cardinals
Skilled plays. Not luck.

They earned every win and should have won week1 bases on whi played better.
Lions looked like dog shit in the second half. Cardinals looked like dog shit in the first half. A tie was appropriate and both teams should feel fortunate they didn't take the L.

A million ticky tack st penalties called on lions but not opponents.
Do you even watch the games? They showed the replay on those penalties and it was clear. Bad coaching, bad execution. The refs aren't out to get us. Just ask Miles Sanders who was nearly decapitated on Sunday and there was no call on Killebrew.

Missed fgs and pats.
Fuck ups, not bad luck.

Undefeated still

Well, you're finally right about something. Your schtick is shit when the Lions are winning.

Lions have given the ball up 4 times and taken the ball away 5 times.
Bengals, Dolphins, 49ers have all given the ball away 8 times already.

Per Next Gen Stats, Jamal Agnew hit 20.33 MPH on his 100-yard kick return for a TD.

Per Next Gen Stats, the Lions offensive line gave Stafford an average of 3.03 seconds throw, 3rd most in the NFL this week.

According to NGS, Wentz only had 2.74 seconds this week (15th).

Two Next Gen stats that show how Darrel Bevell's system suits Matthew Stafford better than previous schemes.
Aggressiveness
2018 = 15.7% (20th)
2019 = 20.6% (6th)
Air yards to sticks (throwing past the first down marker)
2018 = 2 yds short (34th)
2019 = 1.9 yds past (4th)

Per Next Gen stats, the Lions RBs faced 8+ men in the box in high frequency.
C.J. Anderson = 68.75% of the time (most in NFL)
Kerryon Johnson = 45.83% of the time (3rd most)
With Anderson no longer on the Lions, and Kerryon absorbing his carries, Kerryon faced an 8+ man box against the Eagles 60-percent of his snaps -- most of any RB in the NFL this week.

Kenny Golladay had an average separation of 1.1 yards this week, worst in NFL, Marvin's jumped up to 3.1 ... probably why he had a much better day.

Erik Schlitt LionsWire

Love these next gen stats.. definitely tells the story of what we're seeing. Stafford is definitely not the check down guy he was with cooter. Golladay is not elite at seperation... but can make the big play. Kerryon facing alot of stacked fronts means Stafford should open it up.

Great stats. Only thing I don't love about separation is it's measured only at time of reception or incompletion, not measured on all routes ran.

Also, I imagine it's not a great single game stat, but probably pretty solid for a full season stat

Holy shit Ron. Great stat find. I do remember 1980 when we started 4-0, and then went 5-7 the rest of the way to miss the playoffs. Per usual Lions fans went crazy with the 4-0 start. The lions played 2-2 Atlanta in week five in Atlanta and lost 43-28. Damn that team started 5-1. Ended up 7-7 , and had to win the last two games to end up 9-7. Sadly the Hated Vikings the NFC central team I hate the most was 9-7 also. 1-1 against each other, and 3-3 in the division. Sadly Minnesota's 8-4 conference record was better than the lions 9-5 conference record. I was pissed.

Then there was the Dick Purtan parody "Another One Beats our Butts." I remember being pretty upset DET coughed up that game in STL in early December.

No one is covering receivers better than the Detroit Lions.
The Lions? DBs are doing a heck of a job through three weeks.
Last year, the Detroit Lions? pass defense was one of the worst in the league. They finished 30th in passer rating allowed and t-27th in yards per attempt allowed.

This offseason, they went to correct that, adding two new starters at the cornerback position in Rashaan Melvin and Justin Coleman, and they drafted safety Will Harris in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Through three weeks, it looks like the Lions made a huge upgrade.

Top 5 #NFL Teams - Defensive Open Receiver %

2. #Ravens ...??.64.2%
3. #Packers ??...64.2%
4. #Patriots ?.??64.8%
5. #Jaguars ??...65.0%
All of these teams doing a great job of not allowing open receivers.
No team is covering receivers better than the Lions through three games, and that?s just the beginning.

Detroit is also doing an excellent job getting their hands on opponent?s passes. They currently rank third in the NFL in passes defended (24), just two behind the league-leading Patriots. By comparison, the ?elite? defenses of the Packers and the Bears have 18 and 16 passes defended respectively.

As for the more traditional stats, the Lions still rank quite high. They?re seventh in passer rating allowed (80.1), and 11th in yards per attempt (6.8).

With the Kansas City Chiefs coming to town, the Lions? secondary will be put to the ultimate test?especially if star cornerback Darius Slay can?t go due to his hamstring injury. Patrick Mahomes is entering Week 4 as the league leader in passer rating (134.9), yards per attempt (10.5) and passing touchdowns (10).

Message to other teams: Don?t blitz Matthew Stafford:
When the #Eagles blitzed Matt Stafford:
8 snaps, 62% comp, 10.1 yd/att, 1 TD and 135.9 passer rating... 📈
No blitz/Base Rush:
25 snaps, 54% comp, 5.0 yd/att, 0 TD & 68.1 pass rating!

And they're doing it with a limited pass rush. If we can get back to the form of the 2nd half of last season, I really believe they can make a run.

Impressive for sure. Need to get that pass rush going. Flowers has started winning more. Kennard has his games. Okwara needs to step up and one day we'll get Hand and Daniels back. Harrison and Robinson just eat the doubles and improve that run D. Be smart with blitzing too.

Detroit Lions secondary continues to draw national praise.
People are already starting to take notice of the Lions? improved secondary.
An undefeated team is naturally going to draw a lot of national attention, especially when they?re about to go up against one of the best teams in the NFL. This is apparently still true for the Detroit Lions, a team that notoriously is out of the national conversation more often than not.

This week has been a banner week for coverage of the Lions? secondary. On Tuesday, we noted how SportSource Analytics had a stat that suggested no one was better at covering opponent receivers through three weeks than the Lions. Wednesday, Football Outsiders used metrics to show just how improved the Lions cornerbacks are this year as compared to last year?s crew.

Thursday, Football Outsiders was back at it again, this time using tape to show just how good the Lions? coverage is right now.

?Compared to last year?s joke of a unit, though, this new and improved pass defense is a godsend,? Football Outsiders? Derrik Klassen wrote. ?Detroit?s pass defense is now a central part of why they are competitive rather than their Achilles heel.

You should definitely check out the entire piece here, which includes a couple interesting plays in which a chip from the Lions? defensive front helped a ton in pass coverage.
