Game 30 Tigers @ A's 5-7-2017

NOTEABLE:
If James McCann keeps hitting home runs, it will be easier to overlook his .149 batting average.

McCann broke out of an 0-for-17 slump with a two-run shot to left field in the sixth inning to put the Tigers ahead.

McCann has only 10 hits this year. Incredibly, six are home runs.

Tigers third baseman Nicholas Castellanos, whose numbers don't reflect how hard he's hit the ball for much of the year, got some pay-back from the baseball gods on Sunday. He hit a check-swing RBI double to score game's first run in the third inning.

A's starter Sonny Gray was knocked out of the game in the fifth inning when Victor Martinez slapped an RBI single after an 11-pitch at-bat.

Both starters labored early through long counts.

Tigers starter Daniel Norris didn't make it out of the fifth either, although he threw 101 pitches.

Tigers reliever Chad Bell warmed up in the bullpen for the first time on Sunday, but still hasn't been called into action to make his Major League debut. He was selected from Toledo on May 1.

Boxscore.

ROARS:
Dixon Machado: The seldom-used utility infielder made the most of a rare start, with a pair of softly-hit singles. He scored the Tigers? first two runs.

Victor Martinez and James McCann: They only had one hit apiece, but both made them count. Martinez worked an 11-pitch at-bat to line an RBI single into left, chasing A?s starter Sonny Gray in the fifth. McCann gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead with a two-run homer in the sixth.

HISSES:
Daniel Norris: While he only walked two, Norris struggled with his command again in this outing. He did not make it out of the fifth inning, and gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits.

Francisco Rodriguez: It?s time for a change.

STATS AND REACTIONS:
James McCann has more home runs (6) than singles (4) this season.

Shane Greene?s ERA and WHIP are identical, at 1.46.

Francisco Rodriguez has blown four saves this season, the highest total in baseball.

never mind. I rechecked, and I was wrong; he has cost us 4 games thus far.

McCann will need to hit many many many home runs to overlook .149.

Our closer is 7/12. Average closers are 80% or 10/12. Really good and elite closers would be 11/12 or even 12/12. We did win one of those blown saves though, so he's only cost us 4 wins.

It is 7 of 11, unless I am missing something.

Elite Closer = 90%, or 10 (3 wins)

Average Closer = 85%, or 9 (2 wins)

So, yeah, we could be 17-13 right now, maybe even 18-12 with an elite closer. But I was more pointing to your assertion we could be 20-10, which would take more than the closer.

Rodriguez's Win Probability Added is -3.49, meaning he has quite literally cost the Tigers three-and-a-half wins in just 30 games.
No one other pitcher, player, starter or reliever in baseball is even close to that mark.
