JaCoby Jones scored the game's go-ahead run on a bang-bang play at the plate and Jose Iglesias followed with a two-run home run as the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 4-3 in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader at Comerica Park.
Jones came home on rookie catcher Grayson Greiner's second RBI single of the day in the sixth inning. Replays showed the play at the plate was very close, but Mariners acting manager Manny Acta chose not to challenge the call, which would have ended the inning if it had been reversed. Moments later, Iglesias' second home run of the year padded the Tigers' lead.
Tigers starter Matthew Boyd pitched six strong innings, allowing three runs (two of which crossed the plate after he exited in the seventh inning).
The Tigers squandered early opportunities against Mariners starter Marco Gonzales, failing to score a run despite getting four hits and two walks in the first two innings.
But they got on the board when first baseman John Hicks led off the fourth with a double and scored on Greiner's single against a drawn-in infield. It was the first RBI of Greiner's big-league career.
Shane Greene loaded the bases in the ninth inning before escaping with the save. He benefited from a beautiful diving catch by Jones in center field that robbed Ryon Healy of at least a single and possibly more.
The Tigers (16-21) have now played four consecutive one-run games at Comerica Park, winning the last three of them.
WORTH NOTING
* Gonzales was a teammate of Tigers pitcher Ryan Carpenter at Gonzaga University in 2011. Carpenter was recalled to serve as the 26th man for Saturday's doubleheader.
* Gonzales' father, Frank, was drafted by the Tigers in 1989 and spent seven seasons in the minor-league system, including parts of four seasons with the Toledo Mud Hens.
The elder Gonzales pitched 376 1/3 innings in Toledo, most in history among pitchers who never made an appearance with the big-league club in Detroit.
The Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Comerica Park. Jose Iglesias delivered the big blow, hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Matt Boyd turned in another quality start, allowing three runs on three hits over six innings. Shane Greene picked up his eighth save of the season.
Greiner opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning and delivered another in the sixth. His fourth-inning tally was the first RBI of his career.
Iglesias’ home run was his second of the season.

Farmer allowed both of his inherited runners to score despite keeping the ball in the infield.
