Game 4: Chiefs @ Lions Thread

Hosed based what?

Last year KC was the most penalized team,. Lions were the 27th.

Do you think the NFL sent out a memo this year saying don't call penalties on KC because we want them to win more games?

Look at the things are complaining about...they wanted a TD on the field called back, because on a replay where we couldn't see the ball, it could have been a inch short of the goal line.

Complaining about refs calling a fumble and returned for a TD correctly, somehow them not blowing a call screws the Lions.

Our WR bobbling a ball landing out of bounds prior to gaining control.

They missed a holding call. Happens often. We don't want a game where they call anything close to a holding.

Based on watching games. That's what I'm basing it on lol.

I don't care about last year. I really don't.

No, I don't think memos are handed out so certain teams win more games but certain teams are more protected than others. It's painfully obvious.

I'm not even talking about the Kerryon fumble or the Golladay no TD catch btw bruh lol. Did you know that Kennard was held ALL DAY last Sunday and NOT one holding call on the RT from KC. NOT ONE!!! Kennard and whoever was over there were destroying that RT most of the day. It was so bad at one point that when it happened AGAIN and Mahomes scrambled for a huge run, you see Mahomes turning his head to the ref wondering if the flag was thrown lol. I know you seen it. Everybody did. Even the 2 guys doing the game laughed their asses off over it lol. I know you can't call holding all the time but when a defender is getting mugged, CALL THE FUCKING PENALTY!!! Simple. Especially if it's all day. NOT ONE CALL on that RT. Ridiculous!!
And then the blatant pass interference on Kerryon on the bomb where Hitchens (remember him?!) shoves his body into KJ and puts his hands into his facemask "impeding" him from making a catch.
Then at the end of the game where M. Jones is literally thrown to the ground before the ball gets there on the Hail Mary. Completely taking him out of the play lol. Those are blatant missed calls that need to be called.

And again, i'll make it fucking crystal clear. The refs did not lose us this game but they sure as hell didn't help out the situation. I strongly believe that if the shoe was on the other foot and if it was a Sammy Watkins getting mugged or Rick Wagner holding all day then penalties would have gone against us in a couple of those situations. Call it bad luck, bad karma, nobody caring about Detroit but that's how I feel for majority of Lions games. I'm always looking for a flag when I see something positive coming from the Lions lol.

3 things lost us that game. KJ's fumble, Staffird's fumble and Mahomes run on 4th and 8. They clean up that and we win by double digits probably. But that's why when bad reffing comes into play, these type of losses sting a little harder. These refs are garbage and like what everyone agrees on, these clowns are getting soooooo much help from video reviews, challenges etc etc and they still can't get it right lol.

I understand there were missed calls, I just don't think the refs are out there thinking, well I would throw the flag, but it's the Lions so fuck it, I'm not.

The Mahomes scramble was a missed call.
Hitchens should have been called, Patricia could have challenged...chose not too.

The Hail Mary It was wildly discussed over the summer by the league those are viewed differently and not subject to PI review.either. Weird guidelines (Tony Dungy said it was stupid, to call the final play differenrly, but that's what the league wants) not one just made up on the spot to screw the Lions. I mean Chris Hogan for the Patriots got mugged on the final play of the super bowl and nothing was called, on their Hail Mary.

As I said, Jarrad Davis hit Kelce down the field, nothing called. Hit a guy well after the whistle nothing called.

I just didn't see anything to suggest they were purposely trying to screw the Lions, I just think the crew had a bad day.

Great timing for the bye if I do say so.... Hopefully Hand, Daniels, Slay, Hock, AND Stafford all get healthy over the next 2 weeks.... Usually HATE early byes but this is amazing timing.

Detroit Lions Podcast Episode 230 ? Lions Officiating With Dean Blandino. 67 minutes.

In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Dean Blandino to discuss the most recent week?s Lions officiating controversy. This game presented a number of opportunities to look at officiating, why specific calls were made, and why others weren?t. Dean also takes your calls and answers your questions directly. Eventually, Chris has to ask the question that all of the keyboard warriors were afraid to ask.

Detroit Lions Podcast Is Official.
This game against the Kansas City Chiefs was a thriller. You could tell the Lions have turned a corner as a team and the future is bright in Detroit. Unfortunately, the team had to play through a number of calls that didn?t necessarily go the teams? way. Previous Lions teams might have folded and ended the game in a hopeless loss. This Lions team was in it to the very last play. While the scoreboard didn?t show the score Lions fans hoped for, the team showed that they are made of something much different than before. This is the stuff that competitors are made of. It might be just the stuff winners are made of.

Dean talks about the points of the officiating in the game that fans have an issue with and tells us where good calls were made (and why) as well as where officiating mistakes were made. We also take a broader look at the rules of the game and discuss changes we?d like to see there. Lastly, we open the calls to the fans and allow folks to directly ask Dean what?s been on their mind about anything at all.

Where Are You Tough Guys?
In the end, the keyboard warriors were afraid to call, so Chris asked the question that all the tough guys wanted to know about. Dean goes into the infamous ?Party Bus? situation and explains how it all went down, who was involved (nope, no hookers or blow), and the significant issue of the timeline. It?s a good conversation overall, and Lions fans can take a lot away from this.

Highest drop rate in NFL through 4 weeks:
1. Donte Moncrief - 40% (!!)
2. Travis Benjamin - 33.3%
T3. Jared Cook - 27%
T3. Eric Ebron - 27%
T3. Dawson Knox - 27%

PFF?s highest graded Detroit Lions through 4 games.
A look at the top performers through the first 4 weeks of the Lions? season.

The bye week is a good time to look back on how the first quarter of the season has gone for the Detroit Lions. Obviously, everyone is feeling pretty good right now after an extremely competitive game with the Kansas City Chiefs. Of course, nothing is perfect, but Detroit has put a competitive product on the field in all four games, which is more than we could say at this time last year.

This week, PFF released the highest three graded players on the Lions. Let?s take a look:
Offensively:
G Graham Glasgow- 82.6 OVR, #3 G
WR Kenny Golladay- 78.2 OVR, #17 WR
WR Marvin Jones Jr.- 77.6 OVR, #18 WR

Detroit is getting some great production and play out of their wide receivers, as the Lions? passing offense is really starting to take off under new offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. Both Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. are sporting good grades, and the fact that Detroit has two receivers in PFF?s top 20 is a good sign.

But it?s starting right guard Graham Glasgow who steals the show with the third-highest PFF grade among all NFL guards. If your first thought is, ?Then why are the Lions rotating him out for Kenny Wiggins during the game?? you are not alone.

Defensively:
CB Justin Coleman- 81.9 OVR, T-#3 CB
EDGE Trey Flowers- 76.6 OVR, #22 EDGE
EDGE Romeo Orkwara- 73.3 OVR, #33 EDGE

When your top two graded players on defense are the two players you committed the most money to in free agency this offseason, that has to feel good. It?s no surprise that Justin Coleman is on top?and is the third-highest rated corner in the league?after he?s strung together some fantastic performances against good pass offenses.

The Trey Flowers grade may be a little surprising to some, as the defensive end had a slow start to the season and has only recorded a single sack so far. But this reinforces the idea that Flowers? value isn?t in gaudy sack numbers, but reliable, disciplined play.

All i'm saying is that it always seems like the refs turn a blind eye when it comes to helping out the Lions. We all love chalking it up as a "bad day" for the stripes but it's beyond ridiculous.
We can go back and forth on this all day but I respectfully disagree with ya lol. I'm sick and tired of these "bad days" by the refs tho. Kinda tired of saying it.....

Pride Of Detroit Lions Podcast Let?s review the Lions first quarter of NFL play. 56 minutes.
It?s time to hand out report cards, teacher notes and other strain allegories for regular progress on the 2019 Detroit Lions.

First Byte is on bye this week, but that doesn?t mean this machine stops.

We?re handing out report cards as the Lions slam home one quarter of NFL play in the books. Four games is enough to start picking apart more and more of their play and passing judgement thus far. We?re sitting down to grade this team all around, and hand out notes on best and worst performers, and what we?d like to see in the next four games of play.

First Quarter Lions Review:
General thoughts on where the season has gone so far. It?s exceeded expectations, but in what ways?

Will these close losses/ties end up hurting the Lions in the NFC North race? How tight will the division race really be?

How Matthew Stafford has exceeded expectations and found another revival after a sluggish year.

How the offense finally shed its ?boring? title from last year, according to our own John Whiticar.

The defense is breaking up passes like a machine, but can they get it settled in on the ground? What?s caused the drop-off in rushing defense this year?

Justin Coleman earns a gold star as a truly breakout star.

Jarrad Davis... not so much. See me after class.

We had out letter grades and teacher notes. As I said we?re riding this analogy straight into the ground.

PFF data analysts believe Lions are the best team in the NFC North.
Newer data reveals a better team as more of the bad stuff from last year fades away.
Eric Eager at Pro Football Focus had very encouraging words to say about the Lions in the PFF Forecast prior to Week 4. ?I think they?re what the Vikings want to be. . . I think the Lions are a better version of the Vikings.? That is a hell of a characterization, considering what many of us on the Pride of Detroit staff thought about the Minnesota Vikings roster at the start of the season.

https://youtu.be/oc254k8DaoA

On the show, his co-host George Chahrouri took in the argument (around 35:27 in the embedded video). ?When you told me this yesterday, I thought you were out of your mind, and then I thought about it, and I agree with you. I think this is perhaps your best take of the season. I?m on board - this is the most counterintuitive thing I think I could imagine hearing three weeks into the season, and I one hundred percent agree with you.?

Now that we have the result of Week 4 in the books, Eager has laid down in writing a declaration that the Detroit Lions have made their case for being the NFC North?s best team. Although a PFF Elite membership is required to read the whole article, Eager makes the point that:

Our underlying metrics and simulations haven?t caught up to this truth, as we have the Lions with just a 17 percent chance to win the division through four weeks (ahead of Minnesota, but trailing Green Bay and Chicago). A lot of this is due to prior information, which will be regressed away in increasing fashion as the season progresses.

This makes absolute sense from a data analyst perspective, since updated information based on this year?s team will outweigh and displace older information from 2018 in the models as it becomes available. There is a lot of really thoughtful stuff in the piece, with much praise for Darrell Bevell?s offensive changes and some great performances in the secondary.

maybe it wasn't a "good loss". KC looked like shit yesterday too. Maybe they just aren't that good this year.
