After CLE went up bigly twice..thought no way they'd win tonight.

40 games +1 and they ain't anywhere as bad as expected.

Tigers are
11-15 with miggy.
8-7 without him.

Small sample size. I never thought the tigers would be one game out of first after 40 games. Hey they may end up getting buried in the end but they are fun to watch. I hope when victor retires we decide to get a DH who can be a utitlty guy also. No more one demsional players .

Nice win! They are fun to watch because of the low expectations heading into the year. Even a .500 record is a nice surprise so it has been enjoyable so far.

They are no longer "letting us down" like they have the past few seasons.

Never leave a TV early. So glad they won, so mad I didn't get to see it.

Just watched the 7th on MLB.TV, it was awesome. Coming back from injury or not getting to Miller was nice.

Candy, Martin - both doing better than I would have thought now on DL. Miggy out. Hicks and Goodrum filling in nicely, key hits from Jones, Kozma and our 3rd C. This is fun as heck.

Another comeback, another one-run victory, another celebration at Comerica Park.

The Detroit Tigers, who fought back from a five-run deficit to beat the Cleveland Indians 9-8 on Tuesday night, are making this sort of drama routine in 2018.

The Tigers (19-22) are only a game behind the Indians (20-21) in the American League Central and could earn a share of first place if they complete the series sweep on Wednesday afternoon.

Tigers starter Francisco Liriano struggled with control early and then served up a two-out, first-pitch grand slam to Brandon Guyer to put Detroit in a 4-0 hole in the first inning.

The Tigers fought their way back into the game, culminating in a dramatic seventh inning in which they scored five runs, the last two coming against Indians top reliever Andrew Miller.

JaCoby Jones and Pete Kozma hit back-to-back doubles against Miller, who then walked three consecutive batters.

The Indians loaded the bases against Tigers reliever Daniel Stumpf in the eighth, but Stumpf struck out Guyer and then got Jason Kipnis to ground into a double play to escape the threat.

Tigers closer Shane Greene pitched for the fourth consecutive night to earn the save.

WORTH NOTING

* Tuesday was only the third time in Andrew Miller's career that he surrendered three walks in less than an inning of work.

He did so on Sept. 22, 2009, with the Marlins and Sept. 8, 2006, when he was a 21-year-old rookie for the Tigers making just his third Major League appearance.

* Indians starter Josh Tomlin gave up league-leading 14th and 15th home runs of the season.

* Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez homered in the first inning on May 8 in Texas. Since then, he's hitless in his last 19 at-bats.

* John Hicks has started every game at first base since Miguel Cabrera went on the DL 11 days ago.

He's hit .349 (15-for-43) with three doubles, two homers and eight RBIs.

Hicks is batting .373 (19-for-51) with two home runs, four doubles, nine RBIs and 10 runs scored this month.

* Tigers second baseman Dixon Machado made a base-running gaffe in the third inning. He thought there were two outs and was easily doubled up a fly ball by JaCoby Jones.

Hicks came up again in the seventh with the game tied, 8-8. The bases were loaded with two outs and he drew a walk that brought home the go-ahead run.

?I?ve said this from Day 1, we aren?t quitting,? said lefty reliever Daniel Stumpf, who worked a Houdini-like escape in the eighth inning. ?We are going to battle to the very last out.?

This has been a rough stretch for Stumpf, who had allowed five runs in his last 1 2/3 innings entering play Tuesday. But he was one of the few rested arms left in the bullpen.

So, when he took the mound in the eighth inning, there was nobody getting up to bail him out. The one-run lead was his alone to protect.

Stumpf promptly loaded the bases with no out ? a double, and back-to-back walks. Pitching coach Chris Bosio went to the mound to reinforce to Stumpf, it was up to him, sink or swim.
?After I struck Guyer out, I had a lefty coming up and I just said, it?s time to get back to my element,? Stumpf said. ?Got him to hit the ground ball and I got great defense behind me. My team really picked me up.?

There was drama in the ninth, too. Closer Shane Greene worked his fourth straight game.
Greene got the first two outs quickly, and had the third out in his hand ? a tapper by Rajai Davis back to the mound. But he threw it wild and Davis, the tying run, was on second base.

?He made a mess for himself right there,? Gardenhire said. ?He had to collect himself and get a big out, and he did.?

JaCoby Jones, who homered in the first inning, greeted Miller with a double, scoring Machado. Pete Kozma singled to score Jones and tie the score.

Then, with one out, Miller shockingly walked three straight hitters ? Victor Martinez and Niko Goodrum to load the bases, then Hicks to bring in the winning run.

?The first pitch was a heater away that wasn?t close,? Hicks said. ?Then a slider close to me that was kind of an easy take. Then I got to 3-0. I was taking the whole way. He threw a strike, then throws me another slider that was down and in that wasn?t (tempting). I was looking small spot at that point.

?He threw me pitches that I wasn?t looking for, so it worked out.?

I learned that lesson the hard way. 6/30/14, a day that will never let me leave a game early again.

I drove up to Detroit to meet my cousins for the 84 Championship jersey day. Tigers were down 4-1 going into the 8th. Miggy, JD and Torii coming up to bat. I thought this was our last chance. They went down 1,2,3. We decided that was it. We got up and left. We said our goodbyes and got in our cars to drive away. I started to scan the radio to find sports talk radio to hear the post game talk. I thought I was going crazy when they were saying the Tigers won 5-4. I had to check my phone for the score. Rajai Davis hit a walk off grand slam. I will never leave early again!!

Need the Cards to beat the Twins this afternoon, otherwise the Tigers and Tribe would be tied in second with 20-22 records, while the Twins who have played in 3 fewer games, would move into first @ 19-20.

An entire crappy division being under .500 this deep into the season has to be unprecedented, and could continue for another month or more. Of course I would love to see the Tigers in first ~5-7 games above 500 by the ASB.
