With scouts watching, homers hurt Boyd again.
Possible trade candidate dominates between pair of gopher balls.

TWICE AS NICE.
Totally Tigers

Every day, the trade deadline gets closer and closer. And all the same names continue to be mentioned as Tiger players who could be traded by the end of the month.

Today, our writers discuss the likes of Matthew Boyd, Shane Greene, Nicholas Castellanos and Joe Jimenez; all with varying degrees of trade interest.

Holly and Kurt will give their answers to the following question regarding the Tigers and their trade possibilities.

Let?s take a look at this week?s question for our writers.

As we all know, the Tigers have announced that Nick Castellanos, Shane Greene, Matthew Boyd and Joe Jimenez are on the trading block. What should we expect to happen to each of them by the end of the month trading deadline?

Boyd @ 6-8 and has now received 3 runs or less of support by his tepid Tigers teammates in 14 of 20 games that he has started this season. Not a recipe for success and puts undeserved pressure on Matt to pitch almost flawlessly.

But considering that he would be much more tradeable otherwise, Avila might not be able to get screwed by other ballclubs this time, since they will likely offer even less in return now, but he will probably still ask for too much.

I don't know how Boyd feels about potentially remaining a Tiger, when he must know that the cheapskate Tigers brass wants to get rid of him before his Super-Two arb-eligibility kicks in this offseason. But I imagine that he would welcome being traded to a ballclub which has a much brighter near-future, than being likely stuck pitching for one, who quite obviously doesn't.

Not sure why he should ask for less. Wins and losses mean nothing. He's young, controllable, cheap and strikes out a ton. 12 a game. He has the best SO to walk ratio in the league.

I think Boyd is nothing more than an OK #3 or really good #4. He's not a difference maker on a contending team.

Not all contending teams have good starting pitching. Boston for example, Boyd could be a #2-#3.

on Boston he would probably be #3 behind Sale & Price. Not sure how he would fit there though...they would be running out 3 lefties.

Regardless teams that want to assure themselves a playoff spot and a need a starter, a 3 or 4 could do. Plus those best of 7's, 3 's are needed and sometimes a 4. I think you might undervalue Boyd. He can help a lot of teams, depends how badly someone wants to get into the playoffs. Plus all his other attributes..

I hear all the time about pitchers making a lot of money on last year deals don't get much in a trade so if young and cheap controllable guys don't get much either how do you get anything? Do you need to trade a 23 year old Verlander?

Exactly, they're not just getting Boyd, but all 36 of the Ugandan girls as well.

I have a feeling they aren't going to be able to move anyone cept for "maybe" greene and Al will prolly settle for a double A zone expander bat in return or something more less worthless

Green will get moved. Nick really doesn't have too much value. His bat is average at best and he sucks defensively. Boyd is just an average pitcher but does have some value due to his contract.

I think two of three get moved. I also think that almost all of the posters here will think the Tigers got fleeced.

If we can get a blueberry muffin for Nick I'll be happy.

Avila can shoot for the moon in exchange for Boyd, but it is highly unlikely that any pitching needy contender, absent suddenly losing a #2 or #3 starter to injury for a big chunk or the rest of the season, would give up a highly regarded/ranked starting positional prospect who is near MLB ready for Boyd alone.

My point was that it is MUCH more likely Avila gets jobbed than he gets a steal or steals for the players he might trade, b/c that is what his past history demonstrates. As the trade deadline gets nearer and nearer, Alvy might crack and sell lower, b/c his boss Chrissy wants these players off the current and future roster-payroll ASAP.

And I am well aware that W/L records are mainly a team stat, not just pitching, but his past few months have seen an increase in his ERA, FIP and WHIP, which kinda negates his increase in K/BB ratio.

I disagree. Nick is going to be off the books next year anyway. If it was a pure salary dump he would have demanded Al trade him last off season. As far as Boyd's salary, he is going into his 2nd arb. year. This year he is only making $2.6M. Let's assume it goes up to $6M next year. That's what they paid Tyson Ross.

The bottom line is these players aren't in the long term plans so you trade them now to try and re-build the farm system.

Without a doubt one of the worst out looks I've ever read on this board.

In true reality the players available seem to be not worth the value needed in return. That's double talk for, should the Tigers get back better or equal they should feel lucky.

This year they needed a couple of pitchers to fill out the rotation, yet still lost both of them to injury early. Next year they can bring up a couple from the minors, as well as....maybe...Fulmer. Its also possible that Ross and/or Moore would themselves been on the trading block right now, had either or both panned out as they had hoped...hence the roll of the dice investments that came up snake-eyes instead. Same with Mercer/Harrison...they sure got fucked.
