Pitcher Jack Flaherty has been a wonderful surprise this year, exceeding performance expectations and sitting at the top of several pitching categories.
Flaherty is on a 1-year contract and is expected to garner interest as a trade piece to contending teams this month.
He has had a recurrence of some back issues which required treatment and missed starts but nothing that put him on the IL. In his first return to the mound on Thursday, he was dominant.
Within the past 2 weeks, the Tigers have had some hiccups in their starting rotation. Casey Mize has returned to the IL (with an expected return no sooner than late July) and Kenta Maeda has performed so poorly that he’s been removed from the rotation.
Currently, the Tigers are short on starting pitchers. Manager A. J. Hinch has stated that they will move to a 4-man starting rotation and re-think the situation post All-Star break. Right now, it’s Skubal, Flaherty, Olson and Keider Montero (3 starts). The Tigers have recently had to insert several bullpen games into the mix.
If Jack gets traded, that would leave Skubal, Olson and Montero only. The Tigers would have to find 2 additional starting pitchers to fill out their rotation. Probably more if anyone goes on the IL. Additionally, some of these pitchers will be on innings limits in the near future.
Should their current condition change any plans to trade Flaherty? Should the Tigers keep him in a bid to finish the year on a strong note?
Or should they trade him? But by doing so, the Tigers will be reduced to having only 1 veteran in the rotation – Skubal who has only 1 full year under his belt and 4 partial years of experience.
