Gerald Laird Part 2 ??

Doesn't everyone understand that he'll be a backup? And it's only $1 million?

Just thought I'd point that out.

lets look at it like this, if you had bad hamburger somewhere, would you go back and order it again. lol
Yep, we all do it all the time at McDonald's, Burger King, etc. It's cheap, disposable, and usually nothing more than a stop gap until you can find real food. Laird is the fast food to Avila's home cooking.

More like becoming homeless and resorting to dumpster diving for your dinner each night after frequently dining out @ Andiamos or Fishbones prior to when your career job was outsourced to China or India.

I wouldn't be all that surprised if Avila trends down a bit from his '11 sophomore season stats, since none of us know as yet if his season, esp at the plate, was an outlier, or of course hopefully that was truly projective and indicative of his career trajectory as the Tigers' starting C.

Leyland as we all know all too well, can obviously be frustratingly stubborn to us fans as Tigers' manager and could turn Laird into what could be more correctly described as "platooning" with Avila during certain stretches of next season, perhaps during interleague play for example, and even if/when Alex slumps at the plate and then may begin to show signs of breaking out of them. .

for fucks sake, hes not that bad. his career offensive numbers are about on par with santiago's, but i dont see anyone whining about him having been a backup for the last several years. this is starting to get ridiculous.

I enjoy the comments saying, "I can't wait for Avila to get hurt, and see who is still happy about Laird."

Obviously nobody is going to be happy when a productive player goes down. Every team needs a back up catcher. We saw how much it hurt us not having one last year.

I just don't understand why so many people are up in a tizzy about this signing. If it is our only move all off season, then yeah, bitch away, but until then, why not keep a level head? Maybe we are going to spend the extra 3 million we saved on signing Laird on a position that is more important than back up catcher...hmm possibly somebody that plays every day.

Why? I have browsed several Tigers forums and messageboards since Lard was signed, where the exact same arguments and reactions are taking place. They aren't any different from this thread whatsoever.

the more people complaining, the more ridiculous it gets. hes just the backup. he was the backup for this year's WS champs. its not gonna fucking matter. if avila goes down, we're screwed no matter who our backup is.

Why?

I thought the biggest difference between here and ESPN is people can discuss things without the mods getting all upset.

Maybe not.[/quote:eek:h8uxz91]

Because this is not something that should garner 5 pages worth of responses.. Plus I was being sarcastic..

no thanks. he's really bad defensively and cost 3 times as much as laird did. the most important attribute of a backup catcher is being good defensively, something laird is and doumit isnt.

I didn't look at his defensive stats, just his offensive and the different positions that he could play. oh well.

Why not 5 pages? why not 20?

It's obviously a topic people find important enough to discuss for 5 pages.

And sarcasm is almost undetectable in a single sentence of text, sorry if I misunderstood.
