WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers
Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.
Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.
There are 2 types of pitchers. Those who pitch to contact and those who focus on strikeouts.
The first group is more pitch efficient but they don?t throw as hard. Their goal is to get hitters to hit ground balls (hopefully) for their outs.
The second group is harder-throwing and thus, their pitch speeds are higher. As they focus on striking out the batter, they can often throw more pitches than the former group. However, these pitchers are harder to hit because of the power and speed they possess.
Ideally, most teams want each of their pitchers to get an out on 3 pitches or less.
What else should be considered? The ballpark and the defensive capabilities behind the pitcher. Also the injury factor that says the harder one throws, the more likely he is to get injured because there is more strain placed on the elbow.
However, many see flame-throwers as ?sexy? and exciting and prefer watching them more.
What do you prefer? What kind of pitchers should the Tigers focus on promoting?
What type of pitcher should the Tigers promote?
1. Hard-throwing, power pitcher.
2. Pitch-to-contact pitcher.
