Hoops vs Illinois

I say give the reigns to DDJ and let Simpson come off the bench. At least DDJ can drive and create his own shots. Nothing else is working, start the kid. For every good thing Simpson brings, his deficiencies kill the team more. Especially the hero ball. I think if DDJ is given the starter minutes he can get into a nice rhythm and possibly make everyone a little better than they are and maybe eek out a couple of these close ones. Anything is better than what is going on now.
DDJ has never shown the ability to make everyone better. He's getting 22 mpg and only averaging 1.4 assists. Efficiency wise, that's 2.6 assists per 40 mins.

Zavier puts up 9.8 assists per 40 mins. Zavier also shoots 54.4% overall and DDJ is at 42.6%.

DDJ might be able to score as much as X if he's the starter, but he has not shown the ability to even be as efficient in that department. He also would be a major step back in setting up other players.

I know in the post game Howard said Simpson played great defense (and he did) on the last play but I just don?t understand not trying to keep it out of the hot guys hand ? Double him, and make him make a pass. He had 4-6 inches on Simpson. Frustrated. Now we Are in big trouble again without Livers.

With our bench so thin Howard has to start using more zone. We have to try and keep Teske fresh. Also we have to cut our three point attempts down to 20. This is just my opinion but that is what we need to try. We are just not a good shooting team.

Start

Johns, jr

Teske

Wagner

Simpson

Brooks,

Maybe we sink or swim and try Nunez again. We need someone who can?t hit a long shot. Hell this is why Jb gave him a scholarship.
Nunez is not the answer. He was starting at the beginning of the season and didn't earn PT. He's shooting 28.6% from 3, which is awful.

I'd rather see Bajema than Nunez.

I?m ok with either one. Have to try something different.

Yes i agree. But even X was awful disturbing the ball against Illinois. I do think he is pressing and trying to make up for Livers missing Points. Last two games he had To many shots against Psu. Only a few assists verses Illinois. It really doesn?t help that he finds Wagner, Teske , Brooks or anyone else and they can?t hit the broad side of the barn .
Maybe against Nebraska try a zone and start. Simpson, David d., Brooks , teske, And Wagner.. and push, push. Push . I know it is a small lineup but maybe it would work.

That's a terrible defensive lineup, especially for zone. You need length to play an effective zone at this level. Putting three 6' tall guys out there is a recipe for unmitigated disaster.

Zavier did shoot too many bad shots against PSU (still had 6 assists), but he carried the offense against Illinois. He was 7/12 overall and didn't even take a 3. Led the team with 17 points. Only had three assists, but probably has 6 or 7 if someone could hit a damn open shot.

Well crap.

Starting Lineup at Nebraska

Brooks
David d.
Teske
Johns jr
Wagner

He still shoots miles better at the free throw line 71- 59% and a little better from 3 37-32%. Maybe the guy can relax a bit more because he knows he won't get pulled faster if he makes a mistake. A lot of players loosen up when they are starting, and there are some that are more relaxed being the 6th man. Let's see what happens. Maybe Simpson sitting will get his head out of his ass. Let's not pretend that Simpson has been any good this year. This isn't the same as football where our qb has been sucking and the team is still winning(because there is still some positive chemistry). Simpson, this teams quarterback, is sucking and the team is losing. Let's see what a full game looks like. It CANNOT hurt in the least and they are second to last in the Big10 and are not making the tournament. You can tell us " I told you so" if he sputters out and they lose. Big deal, they're losing anyway. DDJ getting more experience just helps for next year when we will really need a good point guard.

DDJ is shooting 19% from three in B1G play. Simpson is shooting 27%. DDJ has a better looking shot, but it has not been falling in conference play at all.

Simpson has not been sucking. He's had some bad games (PSU, foul trouble @Iowa), but he carried our ass against Purdue, Minnesota, and Illinois. The fact that no one else shot worth a shit in those games is why they ended in Ls.

JB pulled guys quickly, but Juwan has not been doing that. I don't think him worrying about being benched is a factor this season.

What about Livers?

I thought he was back.

He Re-Injured himself at the 15 minute-ish mark of second half of the Illinois game on the same type of dunk play as the first time he hurt it. He shot both free throws and then never came back. He is day to day. On a side note I wish he would stop trying to dunk until he is fully healed.

I agree he has had only a few real stinker games. The ones you mentioned. Plus he is pressing because guys are missing the shots off of his passes. Do you think Simpson is playing the same level defense as last season ? The Oregon kid torched him, others down the stretch. He played great defense on the last play but the Illinois kid was just taller then him sadly. Man it was a knuckleball and with our luck it, and in.
I hope him sitting out refocuses him and the team. It is not like we are not close in the losses at Minnesota and Iowa games. Free throws were the difference in both games, and not being clutch down the stretch. We lost Oregon in ot. We lost to Illinois on a last second shot.

His defense has definitely taken a step back. I think some of it is because Teske is dropping on screens instead of hedging. I don't know if that's going to change. I doubt it. Another factor may be how much he has to do for the offense and how many minutes he's playing. He'd never admit it, but I don't think he can bring the same energy on defense when he is carrying such a huge load on offense.

A major problem down the stretch against Oregon was Johns and his lack of help defense once Pritchard got into the lane. Johns stayed glued to his man and left Zavier with no rim protection. Johns still has a long way to go with his basketball IQ. I was happy to see some improvement with his spacing on offense against Illinois.

On 97.1 fm out of Detroit this morning they talked about Michigan power rankings and how they are trending to the bubble and out of the ncaa tournament. They talked about Simpson and all the shots he is taking and said this.

Simpson took 23 shots against was it Psu ? Anyway they were laughing and saying David Dejulius will probably shoot more shots then that :/

Hope he can make some !

It was PSU.

I guess they needed to leave out the Illinois game to try and make their point. Can't really have the most recent game where Simpson shot 58% and led the team with 17 points in that argument!
