jaws puts staff at #20

Staff at 20 is a joke. He didn't have a good year at all but I'd still take him over a lot of those guys in the list not named Rodgers. If I was choosing a QB for 1 year, then yea I'd choose Brady,Manning,Brees over Stafford too, but this guy is young. There were some players who are drafted out of college at 24, Stafford is 24 and is still 4 years away from his prime. Luck and RG3 have a chance at being great, but I think Stafford does too.

i agree with all of this....its just disheartening to see regression and i dont think you can really argue that he didnt regress some this year. Some of it wasnt his fault...alot of his wepons went down, we cant run the ball with any consistency etc etc etc......BUT sometimes we just needed a guy to drop back plant on his back foot and sling it to an open guy and instead we got drift drift drift wing it off his back foot and miss the wide open guy. I really couldnt tell you of a single time he stepped up in the pocket when he faced pressure instead of drifting backward. His mechanics need tweaking.

Yep, I don't know what was wrong with him this year, he would make some really incredible throws, but then would make some terrible throws as well. Everybody is focusing in on his mechanics, but I think that is overblown. There were times when he threw a sidearm bullet to Calvin, then other times when he threw sidearm and it wasn't even close to a receiver.

I'm not sure what was wrong with him this year, but I don't think it's as simple as him fixing his throwing motion. Some of his throws were bad decisions, some of his throws were good but the receiver couldn't make the catch or ran the wrong route, and some of his throws were just picked off by great plays on the Defense..

It just seems like the entire team got Into a funk and couldn't get out of it, add to the fact that a lot of the breaks we got last year turned into breaks for other teams, and it's a recipe for an underwhelming season by Matt.

I may have no reasoning to back this up, but I think Stafford will be a top 7 QB next season.

Yeah, I feel like if Staff, and the team for that matter is worth a damn, then they'll man up next year. They would most certainly follow him but he seems awful quiet until shit hits the fan in the middle of in-game collapses. He'll get better. I hope they get it together next year

I think some are confusing an off year with a bad year. He did not have a bad year. If he had his 2012 season in 2011 we'd all be happy about it. It looks much worse than it is because of his great 2011 season.

And who cares if he's top 3 or top 5, he's been the best Lions QB in my life time and is certainly good enough to get a title. Just need to fill in some needs, like OL RB WR DE and CB/S ;-). Maybe not all those are needed to win, but if the Lions can get a Ravens type defense or Broncos type defense, we can win a lot.

He had ONE guy to throw to all year. Our #2, #3 and TE situation was a fn joke. Sure, he made some questionable throws this year, but look at who he was throwing to. Or better yet, look to who he wasn't throwing to.

Stafford is the least of our problems and if Jaws says "he wishes he could coach him up", then pick up the fn phone and reach out to the kid. Maybe he will...

Between the 20s he was good. Same old good Stafford moving the chains for the most part.

However, in the redzone there were throws he made last year that he didn't make this year. They doubled Calvin more and definitely worked. 6 of Calvins first 8 TDs last year were in single coverage and Calvin had 3 long bomb TDS last year and only 1 this year. Doubles don't work on Calvin in the middle of the field because there is more vertical space. It's up to more of the other receivers to get open but the redzone is a tight area so Stafford is going to have to fine tune somethings(more touch and accuracy at times in the redzone) and make the most out of every throw in the redzone next year. This I think he can do.

Interceptions, 17 is unacceptable even with all the attempts. When you throw 41 TDs you get a pass for 16 ints especially with 10 of those ints when you have a bum finger. But he really needs to limit it to 10-12 no matter who is at receiver. Sometimes it's not his fault but sometimes it is. 3 of the 4 Arizona picks, Atlanta pick, Green Bay home pick not seeing Hayward, at Green Bay pick was a bad throw into a double, all 3 Rams picks.

Stafford is a good QB and he can easily fix the redzone issues and ints. He's not the reason the Lions went 4-12. But when he does fix his minor issues the Lions are going to win alot of games even if the defense and his weapons still suck. A 2011 like Stafford performance in 2013 fixes everything.

He definitely threw some picks at some bad times but one every 42 throws isn't that bad.

bottom line is rarely do REALLY good qbs lead teams to 4 win records. Stafford wasnt a really good qb this year. That needs to change if were ever going to chalenge GB.

I agree. Stafford was basically just solid most of the season and good at times. He had an elite year in 2011. If he gets back there the Lions can mask other deficiencies like lack of running almost all season, lack of run defense almost all season and lack of discipline almost all season and very poor secondary play like the last 6 games of 2011.

If he gets back there and the Lions fix defensive or run game issues, then they are in very very good shape. But believe that when you see it.

Jaws is a joke and this entire ranking is a joke. Makes absolutely no sense how he can say that Stafford isnt even in the top 15 let alone top 10. He had a down year and still put up huge numbers. Flacco, Cutler, Freeman, and Romo are all in the same boat as stafford where they make dumb plays occassionally that cost their teams games. However, Stafford on any of those other players teams probably has more success. Grade the player not the team. Take away all but one of a qbs options for most of the season and through in bad drops through the early part and tell the qb to stay consistent. Stafford played well in spite of it all and we were all critical because he made a few mistakes but he also played really well at times. He wasnt the reason this team failed.

Not having a core group of the SAME WRs hurt Stafford big time this year. I agree with some of his issues you said though...

he wasnt really throwing a whole lot of TD passes prior to all those guys being injured. Titus was placed on IR late. Broyles we didnt even use early. Pettigrew was hurt late. Nate was hurt in the middle. So if youre excuse is Staff had an off year cause Nate got hurt....sorry but ill have to call bs on that. Nate isnt the savior of our offense. Hes barely an outlet receiver. He plays a role and he accepts that role....and the role is severely limited.

That's what you got out of it? That i was claiming Burleson was the saviour? It's pretty much wasting your time with you, eh?

READ CAREFULLY : The WRs were either hurt or suspended on this team in 2012. Even our TE situation was shady with injuries and dropped passes. That HURTS a QBs production wether you want to believe it or not, buddy.

Hes the only one that was injured somewhat early....so ya....thats what i got out of that. I do like that you even put "eh" into your internet threads :D

We can make all the excuses we want, WR, Mechanics, system, but the facts are that he left a lot of plays on the field. He's 24 and finished his second full season, he can only get better, as he goes so does this team. Hopefully he sees that his play was not up to par and he restructures/extends his contract so we can bring in/retain FA's.

hopefully he shits the bed some more so he will resign for alot less money once we are ready to actually contend in 3-4 years. We need to replace about 13 starters...it will be a small miracle if they do anything of significance next year.

Stafford did not put up huge numbers..stop saying that.

I think he's better than #20 in the league overall, but stop lying to yourselves and saying it was only a down year because last year was good.
