Jordan Zimmerman

I don't mind the signing, but I don't see how adding Zimmerman, K-rage, and Maybin make us contenders again, let alone anywhere near as good as were were on opening day of 2015.

It doesn't. I'd like to say it's a start but Maybin, I don't see how he adds any value.

This move is 100 % better them the stupid Maybin move. Maybe AA is taking some steps in the right direction ...
Now if only AA could find us a catcher, third baseman and center fielder.. I hate the thought of trading JD But maybe we could get a haul for him ?

Yeah. They always seem to go big after P's and no doubt we needed them but we need some hitters. C is what worries me the most. I know he's not an average guy.. but Avila adds so much more.

Why is everyone and their brother SO down on big Nick C. Kid is still young and has a year of full time play under his belt... Granted it wasn't the season we all would have hoped for, i think he showed enough promise towards the end of the season to at least roll with him as our starting 3b for next year...

Everyone is getting more money per year than even just a couple of years ago. This is where the $$ is increasing and we are thinking over pay. I was reading something that WAR is now about $8Million per War. So a 3 War pitcher is worth $25 Million.

I am certain that the $189 Million ceiling before the luxury tax is due/bound to go up in the next couple of years. I would be surprised if it doesn't.

$8Mm per WAR?! Holy god.

That's a breaking point for most teams. I would be shocked if teams weren't starting to stockpile pitching even more than they already do in the drafts just to avoid that outrageous price tag.

Young pitchers with years of team control are going to be even more valuable soon.

He is horrendous defensively, his .OBP is terrible, he does not have the power one would want in a corner infielder.

The argument that he is young is irrelevant. How long are we going to wait for him to get better at basically everything? He is not a realistic option for a starting 3B in an MLB club, I have to believe almost every other club would have tried to convert him to the OF and hope he can get stronger and develop some power, or else he's just a bench guy.

Nick is so bad he's the worse in the league. He's not even close to being average on defense. And he's had two full seasons so far.. Walk rate terrible.

What is wrong with McCann? He is one of the best fielding catchers in baseball, a top defender, and his bat is solid.
He is about twice the catcher Avila was.

McCann's only real weakness is pitch framing and game calling. Both improve with experience.

His pitch calling was bad last season, very bad, much worse than ALex. That stat is kind of a big deal.. He's horrible vs RHP. He should be a platoon at best.. Since his hitting against RHP wasn't any better tha Avila there is no way he should be batting against RHP especially since his catching prowess is much worse.

Edit: the thought that some feel, at 25, he should have already mastered those.

Who is Nick's replacement!?
For that matter who is good enough for left that is affordable.
Just who's available that can catch!
Some want a center fielder as well.
Would somebody name some of these good/replacement players. That the Tigers can get?

Those that want to trade J.D. better think about getting another right fielder as well. He not worth 3 players let alone 4 too 5!. And really to complete now, he's needed.

The real problem is too much money in too few players. This team is so unbalanced. Two players have way too much of the payroll now! 56 million = almost 1/3 of the luxury tax. And 58 M's next season. And now the Tigers have added another 20 million player to the all ready top heavy pay roll.

Where the money going to come from for the rest of the needs this team needs?
The real argument is who and how much money will it take for the changes that need to be made? the money has became the problem. no bench little help on the farm, bad bullpen, too many scrubs to support the stars.

I don't believe they go get a 3B .. They'll give Nick another year. That being said, get just about anyone and they will do just as good. Same with CF. Two positions that are arguably the worse in baseball.

We know his fastball has gone down but by the numbers..

95.0/faster
2012 236
2013 272
2014 159
2015 31

94.0/faster
2012 883
2013 987
2014 928
2015 296

I think McCann will get better at calling games with experience. We have to hope anyway. Wish we could find a veteran left handed catcher so we could platoon him a tad..

Hoping as well. but it should be the first thing a guy learns in the minors.

Even a team like Detroit, with a pair of $25 million-plus-per-year players in Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander helping contribute to a reported loss in excess of $20 million in 2014, saw itself in a good enough position for a Greektown-style dice roll on Zimmermann. Surely the Tigers understand that a player with past arm troubles is likelier to experience ones in the future; they experienced it last season, with Anibal Sanchez – he of the Tommy John and labrum surgeries – struggling mightily before a rotator cuff injury shut him down for the season.

Where do you get this stuff?

For defensive metrics, he wasn't even in the top 10 for overall Defense or Defensive Runs Saved. He was dead last in pitch framing in 2015.

http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php

Offensively, despite his BAVG, he was in the lower third offensively for catchers. He has one of the lowest percentages of hard hit balls. That by itself is very telling.

The assumption is that he will improve. He might. But history has showed that players tend to be who they are at age 25 and there isn't much change in their game after age 25. McCann will be 26 in 2016. It isn't like he is 22 or 23 years old with a hope of change. And usually there is minor league numbers that one can look at that might suggest this change. Frankly, I don't see it. But, it is still possible. However, I would not expect him to go from a bottom third catcher to a top third catcher. At this point, the hope is that he becomes "average".

The Tigers definitely needed a starter and he appears to be decent enough. Nothing special but good. I just don't see the point of signing someone like him to a 5 year deal. Is he really going to make a difference on this team?
