Today is going to be a great day. Big news coming!

YES!!!!!!!

Sources: Justin Verlander can make $202m under terms of his new deal. He'll get $180m over next seven seasons, plus vesting option of $22m.
Tigers @JustinVerlander agree to 5-year contract extension thru 2019 w/ vesting option for 2020.
Justin Verlander just got paid. 5-year contract extension through 2019 with vesting option for 2020.
Tigers fans can celebrate before season starts -- a 5-year extension plus vesting option for Justin Verlander.
Tigers extend Justin Verlander for 5 more yrs thru 2019, with a vesting option for 2020, could make up to $202M. Makes him a #TigerForLife
Justin Verlander's $180M contract is largest for a pitcher in MLB history ($5M more than Felix Hernandez).
Verlander will reportedly earn $180 million over next seven years, and should option vest in 2020, he'll earn an additional $22 million.
Verlander will make $20 million for each of the next two seasons, then $28 million annually 2015-2019, leading up to option.
In keeping with policies favored by Tigers owner Mike Ilitch, the team clearly began working seriously toward locking up their right-handed ace, who has a 124-65 record and 3.40 earned-run average since he joined the team in 2005.
Verlander refusing to sign an extension would have been bigger news, but the signing is certainly good news for Tigers fans.
The deal will make Verlander the highest paid pitcher in the majors and, if my math is correct, will make him 38 years old when it expires.
Between Verlander's reported terms, plus Fielder, Cabrera, Sanchez, Tigers will have just over $90 million committed to 4 players for 2015.
From 2009-2012, Verlander threw 170 pitches at least 100 MPH (including playoffs), more than all other starting pitchers in that span combined.
Verlander’s deal will include a no-trade clause.
Detroit Tigers now have $568 million invested in contracts for Justin Verlander, Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera.
Verlander always figured he deserved more than Felix. As JonHeyman CBS confirmed, he got exactly $5 mill more guaranteed.
Verlander makes $28M each year from 2015-2019 and has a $22M option for 2020 that is guaranteed if he finishes among the top 5 in 2019 Cy Young.
Yes, Verlander likes money. But he appreciates history, too. He smiles at the idea of spending an entire Hall of Fame career with one team.
JV's contract was a no-brainer for the Tigers. He brings them major money in ticket sales and the postseason.
Since 2009, Justin Verlander ranks first in all of baseball in: Starts (135), Wins (78), WHIP (1.08), Strikeouts (977), WAR (26.0, highest among pitchers).
Dombrowski: It started to pick up really over the last probably 10 days to two weeks, some high spots, some tough spots.
Dombrowski: I think the commitment was from Justin that he wanted to stay w/the Tigers organization & we wanted to keep him a Tiger.
Verlander: It's tough to say how much I love Detroit. It's tough to put into words.
Verlander: It's a unique situation where I was drafted by the Tigers, I felt like I grew up in front of these fans.
Verlander: They've been extremely supportive of me and this ball club since day one. They're the best fans in baseball.
Verlander: I want to win a World Series, not only for myself and for my teammates, but for the fans of Detroit, too. They deserve it.
Verlander's 100-plus mph inn. by inning 2009-2012, 1st, 11; 2nd, 11; 3rd, 5; 4, 18; 5th, 27; 6th, 25; 7th, 26; 8th, 37; 9th, 10.

Justin Verlander just got paid. 5-year contract extension through 2019 with vesting option for 2020.

Awesome news!!

So ends the board debate on trading or extending Verly.

Filthy rich contract, but he is likely going to remain a career Tiger for a long time, and for better or worse.

Help get us that elusive WS Championship this year Justin!!

Tigers, Justin Verlander Agree To Contract Extension
By Zach Links [March 29, 2013 at 11:43am CST]
The Tigers announced that they have agreed to terms with Justin Verlander on a five-year contract extension through the 2019 season with a vesting option for the 2020 season. Verlander will earn $180MM over the next seven seasons and the option is worth $22MM, meaning that he can earn a total of $202MM under terms of his new deal, sources tell Buster Olney of ESPN.com (on Twitter).

Including the vesting option, the SFX client has achieved his stated goal of becoming baseball's first $200MM pitcher. The guaranteed $180MM portion of the deal makes Verlander the highest paid pitcher of all-time by every measure, as it surpasses the six-year, $175MM deal obtained by Felix Hernandez earlier this winter.

“Justin is one of the premier pitchers in baseball and we are thrilled to keep him in a Tigers uniform for many years to come,” Tigers General Manager David Dombrowski said via press release. “Justin has been a Tiger for his entire career and he is on pace to be one of the greatest pitchers in this illustrious franchise’s history.”

Verlander said recently that he would not engage in contract talks once the season got underway. With little talk of progress between the two sides in recent weeks, it didn't seem likely that a deal would be worked out in time.

Jesus, Verlander has hung around DD too much with that poker face to the media.

We went from no contract talk this season, to an extension making him the second highest paid player in a matter of weeks.

Money issues aside, I'm glad Verlander has shown his loyalty to the fans and organization of the great Detroit Tigers.

Great deal. He could have earned a lot more on the open market. He is the best pitcher in baseball and now he is a Tiger for life. Now Miggy needs new deal lol.

Best pitcher in baseball and he will be top 5 in baseball do at least 5 more years.

holy shit KC that is a **** ton of links you posted.

haha, really glad to see this.

I don't usually get too attached to players, even the ones I like, but Verlander was always different. The thought of him ever putting on another uniform would really upset me, glad to see they've locked him up.

Haha, yes, now looking at it in breadth. Well when I came back from getting coffee and an errand, and back to the tweets, when I saw JV's, I knew it was coming, and it went wild with them tweets in bunches.
I always thought that something special like this extension and the few times before with him and Miggy winning their MVP's, Cy's, TC and such, just deserve to have as many links to stories from around the internet as I can find and put in one easy to read but long ass post.
Man, I just hope they win it all. Like I said in the b-day message, having the Tigers win at age 21 was the culmination of waiting my entire youth, and I truly hope you can experience it and get the same feeling I did in 1968!!!!

and really before all this happened, I was just coming in to post how glad I was, and to remind all the out of the state of Michigan Tigers fans that 'Comcast MLB Extra Innings' was available, and sign up with that or mlbtv, direct, etc.

So, we're not getting any TOP prospects for him? Damnit...

Skabow!

So, we're not getting any TOP prospects for him? Damnit...

Skabow!

Think of all those what ifs we could be talking about...and how we should leave this guy down there longer so he can develop....and then how we should package them up and deal them for a proven player in order to be a serious playoff contender. Damn you Illitch!!!
